  1. Yep. Magazines in general are having a very hard time. Ad pages are dropping, content is difficult to get -- the "news" is stale, the products already showcased a long time ago, unique content is expensive.
  2. What is your NAS? Most commercial NAS boxen will already have all that capability in the software.
  3. While I'm spending your money, get a fan for the front of your case. It has a filter above the cd space and mounting a good quality fan will help bring in air. Every bit counts.
  4. That 901 is stylish as hell but I really don't like the PSU section. You will need to go with one of two options. Spend a good chunk on a really good and expensive psu like the EVGA G2 series. You need something that has the eco mode and won't turn on until certain temps are reached. Or go with the back cooled psu like the Antec Earthwatts series. Look at Silverstone as well. They are cooled with the fan at the back of the unit, not underneath. Another thing is to look at a water cooling solution to your gpu. You have plenty of space to mount the rad on the back and it would allow the airflow to be maximized to the psu without having to fight the gpu. Corsair has a few units that work with certain cards.
  5. I think that, aesthetically, the Be Quiets are nicer. Only a rifle bearing unlike its big brother but Be Quiet has an excellent rep.
  6. That's Toshiba, not Hitachi.
  7. Another that doesn't get talked about much but is obvious when you think about it, is the fact that the GTA series is on a very fine line for acceptability to society at large. To keep on that line Rockstar has to keep control of the game. You *know* that there's going to be mods to have all female NPC's be naked and other such things. It's an easy way to lose everything and get it banned. They *have* to this, it isn't about money at all.
  8. But that is only available with ASUS boards, in particular the Sabertooth X99 board. From what I understand, that isn't going to be the standard for connection either. So far it looks like it's a skunkworks project between Asus and Intel. I'm sure we'll see more indications at Computex.
  9. How did you connect it? Just through the Sata III ports? Through M.2?
  10. Do you have a plan for the parts? If not I'd keep the system and sell or give away as a working system. It would be a shame to put working components into the landfill but it's now old enough that selling the individual parts would be difficult and a real PITA. Replacing it with a complete new system will be the best move.
  11. If you have the budget you're a prime candidate for an ssd. It will speed up your machine tremendously even on SATA II. I would recommend a <240gb but even a 120gb will be a huge improvement. If you can't stretch that far the Hitachi is fine. A lot of people believe that they are superior to WD or Seagate.
  12. The BX is 3 years. I just want some citation that there's been some unreliability with Crucial. I haven't heard of *anything* and I lurk on a whole lot of boards around the ssd section. Crucial has been making a ton of these drives and nobody to my knowledge has had issues with them. Performance wise there's always a faster drive out there but value for money is never an issue. They're cheap but good. As for the EVO, the performance specs are spectacular, especially for the price, but the issues that the 840 series has been having gives me pause. While the 850 series seems to be ok, until it was brought up everyone thought the 840 was just fine too. For the price I'd want some assurances that it won't happen.
  13. That's a weird size hdd. Also very old. You will have to watch it. One thing to keep an eye on is undated apps that change parameters to C: as a default. I had a movie db app that changed how it applied the thumbnails and I suddenly was filling up my C drive from one version to another. Had to get a quick change on that!
  14. I have a SS and it's really nice. One thing is that it's very thin. No padding underneath. It lays nice and flat and the fact that it's completely black is nice. I got tired of all those patterned pads that give opticals fits.
  15. I didn't notice that. I was going to weigh in when you pointed out the date. So easy to miss! So, one year in, how do you like the RM650? Are you happy that you spent the extra money? Has it met your expectations?
  16. It's the best way. Windows will let you know when an update shows up and you can make up your mind what and when to d/l.
  17. There's also the USB C spec which is probably more important than the 3.1. Once that gets everywhere you'll see things take off.
  18. It's temp and your pagefile. Move your pagefile to your other drive and keep watch on the temp files. Turn off indexing as well. You're running an ssd and indexing is more of a hassle than a help. For those browsing the threads, this is the main reason that 120gb ssd's and smaller are not recommended. A 240 - 256gb ssd seems to be the sweet spot. These files don't keep growing but added all together they get too close to the capacity of the smaller ssd's and cause distress. You need to keep on the ball to make sure things don't get too out of hand.
  19. Do you have any info on this? I've never heard of a Crucial failure, yet the EVO's are in the news all the time. For me I would be wary of the EVO.
  20. AFAIK, once the drive goes tits up, you're toast. It's the big difference between ssd's and hdd's.
  21. Depends on what you mean by cheap. That crappy gray metal insides with sharp edges, no cable mgmt. capabilities, pathetic airflow but it has swoopy plastic pieces on the outside with LED fans case? That one? Run away! But a decent laid out case can be cost effective. It just won't have a lot of flash. Something like the Corsair 200R is one. Fractal, BitFenix, basically any of the mainstream makers have a economy model that works very well and is far superior to the el cheapo Chinese cases out there.
  22. There is but it's where you don't have to search to find shit on 7 while 8 drives you crazy. Stick with 7 all the way.
  23. Watch the LTT series about cheap m/bds. Overall, GB and ASUS duke it out each year on who is the largest m/bd manufacturer. Both have excellent reps for build quality and engineering. MSI and Asrock are 2nd tier but the years of bad boards are basically over. No one can afford to have runs of crap and the configs are mature. It's also why the boards all look so similar. Either go with a particular feature set or on price. BTW the Killer NIC seems to be a little flakey. People have reported having issues with it that the standard Intel NIC never has. YMMV.
  24. That unknown brand is NOT cheap. And not that great of a drive either going by the specs. I'd definitely go with Crucial instead.
