  1. Thanks for answering my other questions. I think for now I'll stick with underclocking just to be safe, but it's not even that big of a deal since this build is a huge upgrade from my 6+ year old laptop. Thanks for all your guys' input!
  2. Well based on AIDA64, my water cooler is doing a fantastic job... Does anyone have a suggestion on what numbers I should trust?
  3. From my reading, 74C is the recommended maximum for my processor.
  4. 1.3 under load and .9 when doing nothing
  5. Well if inaccurate sensors is the case, this post, as well was buying a second cooler, is pointless lol. So should I be looking at the "CPU" temp under the Motherboard's section in HWmonitor then?
  6. I recently built a rig centered around an A8-6600K, planning to use its integrated graphics. I knew that AMD's stock coolers were notorious for running hot, so I bought a Hyper 212 Evo after reading many good reviews. When I fired up a few games after getting the machine up and running, I was pleased with the graphics, but then I looked at the CPU temps in Speccy and HWMonitor. I was hitting 80-90C when under game load and idling at 55+. Fast forward through 5 reapplications of thermal paste (both Arctic Alumina and the Cooler Master stuff) and even trying the stock cooler, I broke down and got a CM Seidon 120V and Arctic MX-4. However, even now I need to keep my APU underclocked to about 2.4GHz and I still idle around 45-55C and hitting just under 70C under load. Here is what I want to know: does this sound like a possible processor problem worthy of an RMA (I purchased from Newegg and can still do that), is it possible that I got two bad coolers/I suck at applying thermal paste, and finally, if nothing else, are 45C idle, 68C load acceptable temps for a machine to last a few years? My Specs: Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1 CPU AMD A8-6600K RAM 8GB 2133 G.Skill Ripjaws Motherboard Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. 7. That sounds like fun Is it as easy as running the distro's installer and installing to the jump drive?
  8. So I bought a 64 GB jump drive because it was on sale before realizing I don't have any real good use for it at the moment since I already have two 8 GB for my normal usage. Now I have a bunch of portable storage and no idea what to do with it. You guys have any fun or creative things to suggest?
  9. Thanks for all your help guys. I just wanted to give an update. Everything worked out fine after a few tries, but I'll give the order of tasks that worked: I backed up the whole drive with AOMEI Backupper (http://www.backup-utility.com/free-backup-software.html). I coppied the "SWSetup" folder to a jump drive. I found out all HP laptops have this folder that contains .exe's to install all the needed drivers and software. I wiped the HDD with DBAN (http://dban.org/download) on the DoD short mode. I installed windows using a friend's WIndows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Media, skipping the activation step. At first I didn't think it would work, but after reading this article, http://winsupersite.com/windows-7/clean-install-windows-7-upgrade-media, I decided to just try it and it worked. This is where I had some trouble. Immediately after Windows is launched, I had to turn off automatic updates and install ALL the drivers before restarting. Apparently there was a driver for the HDD that, when not installed, kept Windows from launching. After installing all the drivers I installed all the Windows updates which took several restarts and rechecking for more updates. Finally I activated Windows and all was well! And that's it! Everything went smoothly once I realized I needed to install drivers BEFORE restarting Thanks again for your guys' input! I will mark this thread as solved now.
  10. I like YT, buy my tiny tech thing is clicking a music video to pause when I leave my room and having to move the mouse before clicking when I come back, else the player won't acknowledge the click >.<
  11. Thanks for the help. I still don't know about that "HP_TOOLS" partition though. Should I copy it and make a new partition after the install?
  12. A friend of mine recently came to me asking if I could completely format her laptop so she could resell it. I accepted the task since it didn't sound that difficult a task, but I have a few questions before proceeding. My plan of action was to use DBAN to wipe everything and reinstall Windows, but before I do that, I need to know if I can use another friend's copy of Windows 7 Home Premium to install as long as I register with the product key on the bottom of the laptop, and if This option is at all viable seeing as there were no driver CDs, etc., that came with the laptop? I ask the second question because I've never done something like this and I don't know if I can get the system back to 100% with just stuff I can pull from the Windows disk and product websites. My common sense tells me that if I do enough research I should be able to get all the essential drivers for the computer before the wipe, put them on a jump drive, and get everything working fine, but I just want to make sure. Here's some information: Laptop - HP Paviliion dv6 OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit HDD - Toshiba MK6461GSYN 640 GB Disk Management - 199 MB to partition SYSTEM (system, active, primary partition) 581.28 GB to partition (C:) (boot, page file, crash dump, primary partition) 14.59 GB to partition RECOVERY (D:) (primary partition) 103 MB to partition HP_TOOLS (F:) (primary partition) which is FAT32 instead of NTFS and contains folders "BIOS", "BIOSUpdate", and "SystemDiags". On this partition are files with extensions such as .efi, .s09, .sig, .bin, .dat, and .udm, most of which I don't recognize. This partition worries me when contemplating a total wipe and reinstall, but I wonder if it's something that I could just copy to a temporary jump drive and replace later? Processor - AMD A8-3500M APU Display Adapters - Radeon HD 6750M and Radeon HD 6620G, one of which I assume is the integrated graphics. AMD System Monitor confirms that they are running in dual graphics mode. Disk Drive - HP DVDWBD TS-LB23L If after viewing all of what I've written it's clear to you that I need to take a completely different approach than DBAN, please tell me. I am open to any and all suggestions seeing as I am still only an amature tinkerer and have plenty to learn. Thanks for your time! ~Zach
