I'm an Engineer, rides motorcycles, plays a whole bunch of sports and enjoys building computers. I've had a computer since 1995 and have kept up on both hardware and software since then. As an engineer my work is using computer-aided-engineering software to perform simulation on CAD models. This is HEAVY HEAVY compute intensive.

  1. Thanks everyone! I’ll take the general advice and just sell the parts and get a more efficient system for a NAS
  2. Yea that's my issue - I know it is way overpowered and power hungry. But I don't know what else to do with this system. Not sure if it's worth trying to sell part by part. Yea that's a fair point! Yea so you think selling piece part the different components will be worth it? Sorry you're right P6X58D Premium Yea seems to be a common message with everyone - too power hungry. Maybe I'm just better off selling the parts. Does anyone have recommendations on prices/value?
  3. All, So I have this thing sitting in the back of my closet. Was trying to figure out what I should do with. Is it worth converting to a NAS? I do have some movies/videos/music but mostly documents and photos. Maybe nice to have a backup outside of OneDrive and Google One. Any thoughts/recommendations on how I should go about doing this? I'm willing to spend maybe up to $500 for HDs/SSDs to build a redundant set up. For networking I have the Netgear Orbi Tri-band WiFi 6 (RBR850) with 1 satellite. My house is also wired for CAT6 in every room. Processor: Intel i7 920 MB: ASUS X58 Prime CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-D14 Memory - 6 x 2GB OCZ Gold PC3 12800 1600MHZ 1.65V Triple Channel Graphics Card - EVGA GTX 670 PSU - Thermalake Toughpower 750W Storage - 2 x 1TB WD Black in RAID 0 and 1 x 2TB WD Black Case - Cooler Master CM690 II Extras - A bunch of fans and a disgusting amount of dust
  4. Thanks! Appreciate it! It was fun to get back into it after this long. The nervy part was just the Thermal Paste and the AIO install.
  5. Quick and Dirty Cinebench Comparison My poor i7-920 The new i9-13900K
  6. 8K is funny Windows scaling seems to be tough in Windows 11. Was getting 30-35 FPS in A Plague Tale - Requiem with DLSS set to Quality. For some reason it kept crashing when I tried to turn DLSS off completely.
  7. UPDATE 6 Alright, here we go! Got the DeepCool LS720 and now ready to rumble! Case is ready Prepping the Motherboard Cool box that the i9-13900K comes in CPU Installed RAM installed in the A21 and B21 slots of the ASUS Z790 MOBO Put some Noctua NT-H1 Thermal Paste on the CPU MOBO Installed in the Case Power Supply Installed 3 x Lian Li AL-120 fans installed on the front bracket of the Core P3 TG Pro DeepCool LS720 installed on the MOBO side exhausting through the rear side panel. Replaced the fans that came with the AIO with the Lian Li AL120 to match the case fans Vertically Mounted the ASUS RTX 4090 TUF GAMING OC Got all the power cables, ARGB cables and fan cables all plugged in. The AIO is plugged in to the AIO Pump; The Lian-Li fans on the radiator are plugged in to the CPU fan; Power Cable and PSU button turned on! Pressed the button for the first time....and it posted! On my Samsung QN900A 8K TV COMPLETED
  8. UPDATE 5 Okay the first step in actually building was to assemble the case which comes in what looks like a normal mid-tower sized box but is in pieces. First, I have to say, ThermalTake's instructions are horrible. I had to use some build log videos on YT with the original Core P3 owners and try to compare with the Pro reviews and the manual. The screws are all mixed together and 1 set of the same screw was split between 2 tiny ziplocs (wtf). So the first thing I decided to do was separate all the screws and figure out what was for which. They provide a bunch of ones that you will only use depending on the configuration and the different types of hardware you install. For example I will likely not have any HDDs or 2.5" SSDs. Probably a little extra but sorting and labeling the screws made my life way easier during the assembly process and likely will keep it simple for the computer build as well. Then I installed the PSU brackets, the 2 PCI-e brackets and the arms that hold the tempered glass panel in place. For the smaller PCI-e bracket (the one that has the input shields/thumb screws), you can decide how you want to orient them based on if you're going with horizontal GPU alignment or vertical. I am planning on vertical with a riser cable so this is how it was installed. Then I installed the fan bracket - you can install this on the front or top depending on what you want. I am going to put the AIO radiator on the motherboard panel so I decided to do a front mounted fan bracket to put another set of fans for intake for all the rest of the components. After that it was the tempered glass panel that has rubber grommet inserts and rubber washers that you put on both sides so that none of the metal actually touches the glass. That is pretty much it for now until I am ready to build the computer itself. I did keep my screws organized into the same baggies but labeled them based on my number scheme. Here are some done shots. You'll notice I did install the rubber feet on the right side panel. Typically that's only if you want to do horizontal configuration for the case. I just put it on there because it makes it easy to lay the computer flat and build on that side - when I get to building the computer at my office desk or something. This way the side panel doesn't get damaged and the metal doesn't damage any of my desks. I'll remove the rubber feet once I'm done done.
  9. UPDATE 4 Got my case in from Newegg today and went to Microcenter to get the big guts. All I'm missing now is the AIO that should get here Wednesday. Going to use 3 of the AL120s to replace the fans on the AIO Rad and then another 3 for the case. Might pick up a couple more depending. NEW RIG LIST UPDATE Processor: Intel 13900K MB: ASUS ROG STRIX Z-790-E GAMING WIFI CPU Cooler - TBD Memory - G.SKILL TTrident Z5 RGB 2 x 16GB DDR5-7200 Graphics Card - ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC PSU - Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 1350W Storage - 1 TB Samsung 980 PRO NVME SSD && 2 TB WD_BLACK SN850x NVME SSD Case - ThermalTake Core P3 T6 Pro (Black) Cooling - 6 x Lian Li UNI AL120.
  10. Yea totally understand that it was overkill. Some of the other options were out of stock/back ordered and I thought I would be building this rig sooner. Like I said I was trying to get a Vertex GX or Dark Power 13 1000W. If I am able to get one before I start building it, I will switch and return this TK.
  11. UPDATE 3 Got the Power Supply today. Was hoping to do Seasonic Vertex 1200 or beQuiet Dark 13 1000 but can't find them available yet. Any thoughts about waiting for those over this one? Temp open chassis should get here tomorrow (Any guesses?). I'm going to use that one until the NV7 comes out (and if the reviews are good). NEW RIG LIST UPDATE Processor:TBD MB: TBD CPU Cooler - TBD Memory - G.SKILL TTrident Z5 RGB 2 x 16GB DDR5-7200 Graphics Card - ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC PSU - Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 1350W Storage - 1 TB Samsung 980 PRO NVME SSD && 2 TB WD_BLACK SN850x NVME SSD Case - TBD
  12. I know right! Just for giggles I ran Cinebench, Heaven and Crystal before I wiped my old computer. Just for a fun comparison when the new one is done.
  13. UPDATE 2 Picked up the memory and some storage from Microcenter. Hopefully next is the PSU. Once I get that, I'll be able to get the MB and CPU. 14. Hey all, Silly question, so I just bought a 4090 TUF OC and going with a 13900k for a new build. Is it stupid to know that 1200 or 1350 might be overkill but consider that a higher wattage psu can have a larger base output where the PSU fans stay off? ie I’m considering Thermaltake GF3. It says that the fan starts at 40% load. So I was thinking of getting 1200. any thoughts?
  15. UPDATE 1 Graphics Card lottery. Got lucky with stock opening up at Newegg NEW RIG LIST UPDATE Processor:TBD MB: TBD CPU Cooler - TBD Memory - TBD Graphics Card - ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC PSU - TBD Storage - TBD Case - TBD
