  1. Hi Everyone, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for dockers / VMs to help me automate the following scenario: My wife and I shoot on film and as part of getting the photos developed we are also given the scanned photos. These photos are emailed to be in a dropbox link by the photolab. The link would be to a shared folder on Dropbox, and will contain a number of folders, one for each roll being developed, with the relevant photos in each. Currently, when I receive the email with the photos, I copy the files to my dropbox and then use rclone on a Windows VM (the VM also does a few other things) on Unraid to copy the files over to the Unraid array. Ideally, I want to get to a point where I can forward a copy of the email to a specified email address and then have a way that something (app / docker / vm / whatever) gets the link to the shared Dropbox folder, and downloads the contents to the array. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might do this? Thanks in advance!
  2. Hey Nicholas, your setup sounds pretty amazing - just read through the stuff you posted on the Ubiquiti site too! Can I ask what you meant by running the AI on linux? Were you going to use the AI in a docker container? I ask as I'm about to go do the same - was inspired by the same video by The Hook Up too!
  3. Thanks @heimdali! The parts are slowly arriving and I can't wait to get it all going! Had another related question - I'm going to be running a Windows VM with Blue Iris as an NVR + a Deepquest AI to help with motion detection, similar to this. The output from the cameras will be in terms of a 24x7 lower resolution 480p stream, images for processing by the AI to detect motion, and 4K clips for whenever motion is detected. Having a GPU will help with the transcoding for this. I want to store all of the output in a share on unRAID, which brings me to my question - should I turn on caching for this share or not?
  4. Thanks guys! @heimdali I think I may just go for a UPS a bit later when I can, and avoid the PDU as I don't expect to need one anytime soon. Just waiting on the parts to arrive and I can start putting all of this together!
  5. Apparently the newer versions support btrfs. Thanks for the UPS info - I'll have a look at a used APC one! If I go for a 19" (rack mount I presume), do I need a PDU?
  6. From what I understand, unRAID allows you to use a cache pool (two SSDs in RAID 1) and then use btrfs on top of that. Yes! Once I'm done, I hopefully will Btw, do you have any recommendations for a UPS for this config? I could go for one later, but just wondering if perhaps I should go for it sooner rather, than later.
  7. Thanks, that's a lot of great info! I'm going to go with the HGST DC HA210 2 TB HDDs based on your recommendation. I've also decided to go for Noctua NH-U9DX i4 coolers - they will fit a 4U case, as the larger NH-U12DX i4 unfortunately won't. The plan is to run Btrfs on the SSD cache, so I'm glad you've recommended it too. Thank you! Yes, that's right, they're for cooling the disks, and yes, definitely going to have fun pulling it all together :). Hopefully this should all come together nicely!
  8. Thanks Heimdali, that makes a lot of sense. I'll go with an 850W then. Yeah, I thought that too, but given this is for NAS mainly, and I'll have the SSD cache, will it be as much of an issue? Also, with the cache, will 2 480 GB SSDs suffice (they will be in RAID 1), or should I go for 1 TB SSDs? Yes, I'd prefer it be quiet, so will look at the Noctua. What about the Be Quiet Dark Rock 4 or Dark Rock 4 slim? The case is a Guanghsing 4U 19" Rackmount ATX Server Chassis. It comes with 5 fans (3 x 90 mm in the front, and 2 x 60 mmm in the back). Depending on how the rear fans are, I might replace them with quieter ones later on.
  9. Hey Everyone, I'm new here, but have been avidly watching LTT videos daily for the last 4 or so years. I've always wanted to put together my own server at home (ever since watching this video), and have finally made a start on it. I've just purchased a 4U server case with 8 hot swap bays, and am soon going to be getting a Supermicro X9DRL-iF Dual Socket R LGA 2011 Server Motherboard, and 2 x Intel Xeon e5-2650 v2. I also plan to run 4 WD Red 2 TB HDDs for now with unRAID, and 2 SSDs in RAID to use as a cache drive, and potentially a GTX 1030/1060 for some 4k video transcoding. The plan is to have a NAS for local photo, video, and document backups, as well as run a few VMs. I need your advice on a few areas: What PSU should I go for? From my calculations a 650W should suffice, and provide enough headroom for future HDD expansion. Or should I go for more? What CPU coolers should I go for? Any help is most appreciated! Thanks!
  10. After a bit more research I'm thinking of going for a Supermicro X9DRL-iF Dual Socket R LGA 2011 Server Motherboard, and 2 x Intel Xeon e5-2650 v2. This along with a suitable hot swap chassis and an LSI HBA and then the 4 x HDDs, and 2 SSDs should be fine I presume? If I decide to go with these parts, can anyone clarify the following please? What PSU wattage should I go for? What coolers should I get for the CPUs? Would it make sense to get 2 nvme SSDs and mount them on a PCI to nvme adapter? Thanks for the help!
  11. Hi Everyone, First time posting here, but I've been a regular viewer of the channel for the last 4 years. Since being inspired by this video, I have always wanted to put together my own NAS and server at home, and have finally gotten around to doing it. Based on the details below, what are your recommendations? Budget (including currency): AUD 1000 - 2000 Country: Australia (Melbourne specifically) Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: NAS for photo & video originals, and document backup (this is in addition to backup on google drive for photos and videos, and everything else on OneDrive) Running a Windows VM with BlueIris as an NVR connected to 4K PoE IP cameras. I'll need a PoE switch for that, but that's later down the track and can be separate to this Running a DeepQuestAI server (in docker container) for computer vision detection for the BlueIris NVR above A server to run additional VMs to experiment with Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I am looking to keep the price down, and want to buy used hardware where possible. I was thinking of a dual xeon server with 32 GB of RAM, running unRAID and 4 x 2 TB WD Red or Seagate Ironwolf drives, with 2 x 480 GB SSDs for cache. For BlueIris, I might also see if I can get a cheap Quadro/GeForce card as well. As much as I would love to go out and get a proper server chassis for this, my concerns are that it will be very noisy (this is going in a cupboard under the stairs) and power draw being pretty high. However, if that isn't the case, I'd be happy to consider it, particularly since I will eventually want to have a server rack to put this, and a router/switch, etc. in the future, along with possible other servers, depending on how I go. I should also mention that I am planning to set up Home Assisstant on a Raspberry Pi 4 soon, to start building out home automation, so this will be separate to that. So everyone, what are your thoughts and recommendations? Any help is appreciated!
