Yeah try ubuntu, But during the installation, disconnect any drive on the PC where you are installing ubuntu to your external drive. Then you can install the bootloader on the external drive, which should then boot on any computer Im doing it myself. It is quite nice, i only carry my external ssd in my pocket.
