I guess that's true, didn't think of that. I don't know much about fans and assumed that the tiny bit of fan that is actually above the shroud wouldn't do much do help with the GPU's temperature. I also don't have and HDDs, just two SSDs which are mounted on the cable management side of the case next to the motherboard.

Hey everybody, So this is just a quick question about intake fans. I have a CoolerMaster Masterbox NR600 case, and due to the cutouts I have 3 120mm Noctua fans instead of 2 140mms. I never really thought about it, but the lowest of the three blows directly into the PSU shroud, which has no ventilation cutouts and I would assume does nothing for the PSU (the fan for the PSU is facing downward). Does the fan actually does much, or is is just producing additional noise with no real cooling benefit? There's probably only about an inch or two of the fan that actually sits above the shroud. I can’t imagine that tiny bit makes a substantial difference. Thanks in advance!

Oh that’s interesting. I don’t have any HDDs though, just two SSDs. So a little update to this all: As several have suggested and Noctua support mentioned too, I removed the top exhaust fan out of the case and listened to it operate in my hand from different angles. It sound okay outside the case I think, and in the process I may have found the issue. I have a coolermaster hyper 212 black edition CPU cooler. The fan on that is actually rattling due to a bearing I think, and someone explained that they don’t really make quality fans. I figured that was fine, and I’m in the process of getting a replacement via RMA. I put my ear to the heat sink, and it sounds like that is rattling around from the fan. I’m pretty sure that the noctua fans are kind of resonating it around the case (hence why I was thinking the case fans all made the noise). Other than that, the mounting plate for the heat sink is made out of cheap plastic, and I’ve installed it several times to the point where it’s a little worn out, so that may be contributing to the problem. I have tinnitus so it’s kind of hard to source out the problem even when isolating the noise, so that’s just my best guess.

So a little follow up, I was going to record the fans out of the case but after putting my ears up to the intakes, it looks like they make the same noise as the exhaust. Despite this, most of the noise I’m hearing is coming from the top exhaust, with a bit coming from the rear as well. Maybe the fact that they’re facing outwards is making the operation noise more obvious? I contacted noctua just to verify that this noise is normal, and I’m thinking at this point it probably is. I read a couple of reviews where people claim that they’re just generally unacceptably noisy for them. I got them on Amazon and they’re still within the return window thankfully. If that’s the case, does anyone have any suggestions for alternative fans? The case I have is fairly high airflow from what I’ve read, but I’d like to keep the noise down to a minimum if possible.

I’ll try to record it tomorrow morning. The noise I’m talking about it that higher pitched “ring” over the normal whooshing noise of the fan operating, kind of like a hair dryer. The recording doesn’t do it justice, but it’s very distracting and quite unpleasant. From what I can tell, the majority of the noise is coming from the horizontally mounted exhaust. The intakes are dead quiet and only produce the noise of air moving, so I know it’s not the normal operation noise for the fan in general.

If it was a different pitch I would be fine with the noise (obviously all fans make noise, I just read about the reputation of noctua), but frankly it’s very irritating when I’m using my computer for work or class and even more so when playing games. I know very little about fans, but I was recommended these particular ones. Two things I’ve read (maybe someone can verify this) is that these particular fans are more suited as CPU coolers, and that sleeve bearing fans aren’t made for horizontal fan mounting. I tried looking into it and apparently noctua uses a special type of bearing, but that’s all I can think of.

Hi everyone, So recently, I decided to upgrade the fans in my case (I have a CoolerMaster Masterbox NR600). I went with 5 Noctua NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM fans (3 intakes, the rear exhaust and one in the top-rear). Recently I've been noticing that there's an aggravating moan/whine to the fans when they're running, even when I'm idling on the desktop. I've tried loosening the screws a bit and I bought anti-vibration pads to no avail. Messing with the RPM doesn't seem to make the noise subside regardless of speed, though it does get louder when playing games to the point of irritation. It seems to be coming from the exhaust fans in particular, and given the lack of any sound dampening in this case it's very hard to ignore (attached video is when they're idling. Hi everyone, So I've had my computer for about a month now. There's been some bumps in the process, but for the most part I've been able to resolve problems. Today after elevating my PC off the floor with some books until I get a cart (I'm on carpet so I wanted to give the PSU fan room to intake air), I've been noticing this weird clicking and breathing noise from my PC that comes and goes, particularly when I have a program open like Firefox, discord, etc. The only things that have changed are me elevating the PC case, and updating my GPU drivers today. I stopped all my fans, and the noise continues from around the CPU area. Earlier on I was having issues with the VRM chokes whining, but I resolved that by disabling the c-states. I'm posting a video with my microphone above the top of the case. The overall rattling noise that you hear is just my exhaust fan- I plan on getting a new one. Alright, that's good then since I was thinking about doing that configuration. If I were to do 2 x 140mm intakes and 1 x 140mm top-rear exhaust, would the pressure in the case still be okay with the rear 120mm exhaust and CPU fan? I wasn't sure if the CPU fan contributed to exhaust pressure, or the GPU for that matter.

My computer mainly. My upstairs is anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees hotter than downstairs, and due to bugs and having a window AC my windows and door stay closed most of the time. During the winter I just crack the window and close my vents since the PC produces enough heat for the room during the day. My idle and load temps aren’t outrageous, but I’d like to help draw cooler air in and vent out hotter air more efficiently if possible. My main issue is GPU temperature, honestly.

Hey guys, So I've been looking around for ideas on how to change my fan setup in my case. In another post, it was suggested that for this case you get 2 x 140mm intakes and a nicer than stock 120mm exhaust. I'm upstairs in a fairly small room that warms up quickly, so I'm trying to deduce whether or not it would be logical to add a 140mm exhaust fan on the top-rear of the case. I also currently have a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 black edition CPU cooler, so I was wondering if that would contribute to a higher exhaust CFM or reduce the effectiveness of the heat sink's fan?

Managed to fix the issue I think. I disabled the C-states in my BIOS and the noise subsided. The fan's still rattling a bit, but I'm fairly certain that's just a bad exhaust fan.

I tried to isolate the noise issues I’ve been having. It’s not the greatest as I was using a paper towel roll, but it should give you some idea. First video is against the CPU VRM (noise becomes more obvious towards the end), second is against my exhaust fan. In terms of the latter, I think it may just be a bad fan but it’s a brand new case. The VRM whining noise sort of has two levels. About once every 30 seconds or so it becomes more audible and frankly it's a bit hard to ignore. Hey guys, I recently built my second computer. Trying to save money, I re-used an old power supply which was working fine despite having it for 5 years and spilling coffee on it. It was noisy and apparently a lower-end EVGA PSU so I decided to get a Phanteks AMP 750W as a replacement. Additionally, I noticed that I was having a whining issue from around my motherboard's CPU VRM area, which in another post a user said was whine from the VRM chokes. I decided to go from an Asus Prime H470-Plus motherboard to a Gigabyte Vision G Z490 to see if that would resolve the issue. The noise has changed a bit, but it still persists. Occasionally it will make an almost "grinding" noise similar to a printer before subsiding. I'm in a fairly quiet room so it's difficult to ignore. I currently use an i7 10700 (Locked), and I'm wondering if there's a potential issue with this? I'm really at a loss as to why the VRM is making these odd noises. Putting my ear to the motherboard it's near the CPU so I'm certain it's not my GPU causing coil whine.

Oh boy, was afraid of that. Well that’s fine, it’s better that I do this correctly than skimp on parts when I’m investing this much. I’ll most likely be refunding the motherboard and spending a bit more on a higher end one. In terms of PSUs, is the Corsair CX750M 750W 80 Plus Bronze any better? Unfortunately that’s all my local Best Buy has, and I need to resolve this as fast as possible for school/work. If you’re absolutely certain that this old one is not going to damage my hardware however, I could always wait and just use amazon.
