  1. I am leaning more towards the thinkpad side. I’ve used them for work and I like how rugged they feel. Part of me is considering them because spilling water on my keyboard is how I killed it, Thinkpad has spill resistant keypad.
  2. I was just looking at a ThinkPad... I found a P52 workstation on clearance for the same price (2k) it has a 8th gen i9-8950HK And a Quadro p3200. All in a chassis that is known for being sturdy. It might be complete overkill for what I need but I am pretty drawn to it... I don’t know now even more lol new Dell XPS 15 or an older model think pad?
  3. Thanks, it’s what I was afraid of but you all have helped me quite a lot
  4. Mobile is fairly critical. I’ve looked at building a pc. Once you account for everything (keyboard, OS, speakers, monitor) all while being in one spot, just won’t cut it for my work. Unless it was at least modestly portable, I already use a rolling backpack for work, I wouldn’t mind strapping a monitor to it....but realistically a laptop would be better suited for that. thanks for the warning about Hp. That’s kinda what I was afraid of.
  5. Hello all The best way to describe what I need in a machine could be classified as creator or content maker. My last laptop was a 2015 MPB that I killed with a coffee spill. For 2020 I am looking at a few brands other than Apple, I am a little tired of them not truly supporting the professionals and going more for the general market (unless you pay 2x more). I think I am going to buy the laptop at Costco, I can get the manufacture warrenty plus 3 years of water/any damage repair warranty. But I have also considered best buy and their open box computers... The main laptop in question is here The new HP Envy 15. I wanted to ask people here what they thought of the HP brand, how reliable is it? My roommates dell xps 13 from the same time (2016) still holds up pretty well so I was thinking of the new xps 15. However the equivalent spec’ed laptop (this one) is out of stock and by the time the promotion is over will be $400 more than the HP. I kinda wished I had a laptop by the time school starts (September 1st for me). So my real question, would I regret the Hp? They announced a focus on creators for the 2020 models....I’m wondering if I can bank on it. I saw hinge issues with older models. Is the HP laptop really a worth alternative to the MBP 16 or Dell Xps 15? It certainly is cheaper... my other main question is what other laptops do you think I should be looking at? My ideal specs can be referenced off the two links I have above. The screen itself is fairly important, for the type of work I do. Mostly photography with a little graphic design. The 2060 is a nice draw....I secretly want to game on it. Thank you for reading this and giving me any of your time/advice. I love the channel and I don't post here often, I know this is a good place to find adcive tho.
  6. That was the quoted price at a place that was not apple. The logic bored needs to be replace. and the tier I am looking at is the same price. Either way I plan on spending about that much.
  7. 1. Budget. $1400-$1700 USD. This is for a full pc setup. Monitor, mouse, keyboard and OS need to be factored. See Aim for more info. I live in Florida. The closest Microcenter is a 7 hour drive. ***I can receive education discounts because of my job as a high school teacher. 2. Aim: I would describe usage in computers as a professional designer with an emphasis on photography. I use a lot of Adobe software for creative content and I need a workhorse. I am wondering if a pc will be better suited for desire to have a faster editing time and I would like to see what type of desktop I can get with your help. I would love to game but that is a luxury and not necessary for the first build. Upgrade paths are an attractive aspect of building a pc. I am a hardcore laptop user. I come from using MacBook Pro for over 10 years. My previous model (early 2015 MBP) was killed by a clumsy coffee spill. The estimate of the repair was between $1400-$1700 usd which is where I found my budget. That amount of money I know can go a very long way in the pc world. I found a pretty good laptop that meets my requirements. I recently started following LinusTechTips and I thought this would be the perfect place to find the right people to help me. Target specs: 32 gb of ram. I don’t need a lot of storage, I plan to use bluray and external drives for work storage. A motherboard with multiple pciExspres slots would be nice, adding more 3.0 usb for the drives later. Probably a new AMD cpu. A middle to low end gpu, necessary for some of my work but games are only a 2nd priority. I do light video editing but nothing that would require a serious component. Older generations are worth considering I think because I am coming from a laptop I am use to a machine that won’t game. The monitor is a higher priority than gaming. This pc should be designed for work and be upgradable to gaming (2nd monitor, new gpu) 3. Monitors. This might be the hardest section, it is for me. There are too many options. I plan to eventually upgrade to at least 2. One for work and one for gaming. The first need to be 1440p at the minimum and ideal for image editing. HDR would be nice. The monitor for my pc is more important than the GPU. A good comparison are the Mac screens. I have been spoiled by pretty displays and expect to have that in my pc. Used is probably a good idea? I don’t know. Basically, the best monitor that makes senses for the pc being spec’d out. 4. Peripherals. I need a mouse, keyboard and windows, nothing fancy but nice. The bar is a good laptop like a ThinkPad Carbon or Dell Xps 5. Why? I destroyed my old laptop with water damage. I would like to know what I could get with the same money to fix it. Used and older generation parts are encouraged with advice on where to look an what to do in the used world where possible. Thanks a million for the help, I am overwhelmed by the amount of choice going into this!
