  1. One LNA per fan. It's the cooler master AF120 so I think they're pretty average
  2. Hi everyone, This might be a strange question but have I created a fire hazard? Been trying to get some new fans to work on one of my PCs to make it a bit quieter. Only have one motherboard fan header which is taken by the single rear exhaust fan, and have replaced the two front intakes. I'm left with Molex for the power, so I got a molex adapter which has three fan headers with only two pins in it. I've then plugged the noctua LNAs (4 pin) into that, and then the fans (3 pin) into the LNAs. Seems like a dodgy combo of different amounts of pins but it seems to work fine. When I was bunching up the cables to tidy up the rear I noticed that the LNAs were pretty hot... Is this dangerous? I've used another pair before but never touched it so I don't know how they're supposed to be really. Is it just physics because it's a resistor that, therefore, generates heat? Or have I created a fire hazard by shoving 12v power into these adapters? Cheers!
  3. Sorted. CMOS battery out for 5 minutes and then a BIOS update yep. Well there's a useful tip in case anyone else has this problem again haha! Cheers
  4. Hi everyone, I just upgraded my CPU and motherboard (if it helps, B450M-K PRIME and a R5 3600), everything else has stayed the same. I booted it up once and it beeped and got into the BIOS, so promising signs, but when I exited the BIOS and restarted nothing is happening any more. It doesn't beep or display anything to the monitor. I've just tried it without the GPU and it's doing the same thing, but when removed the RAM it did the RAM error beep which I thought should be a good sign. Put one stick back in, still no GPU and it won't POST again. Anyone have any idea what's going on here? Thanks in advance
  5. God I wish I was in the US, I can't believe some of the prices at the moment!!! It would be a good deal to get the 2600 at £120 at the moment here. At this point I'm thinking a 3600 at under £180 would be a worthwhile investment considering just how much better it is... definitely looking more future proof
  6. Do you think the extra couple of cores on a Zen+ would make a difference as well then?
  7. Hi guys, I wonder if anyone else is having a similar issue to me? I have an RTX 2060 and a Ryzen 5 1400, which I'm aware is a bottleneck but I didn't realise quite how much it really was. I know that the game has some poor optimisation on AMD processors so was expecting to spend a bit of time tuning settings etc but no matter what I do I can't seem to get the CPU to stop being pinned at 100% usage 100% of the time, and the GPU is basically idling. I've so far not seen it get past about 80% at any point. This is happening on 4k right the way through to 720p and on any combination of graphical settings imaginable - it will be fine and smooth for a few minutes but leave an area or even walk to the next objective, not even driving, and the stuttering is unbelievable. It's the same in combat. I'd kind of settled on 900p Ultra as it seemed to be working fine, no dodgy frame times even while driving but as soon as I got into combat it all went south. Couple of issues I'm aware of - I am running the game on a secondary HDD (I know, shoot me) which I hope to not be the case very soon, but does this cause more stress on the CPU from having to load assets differently? I haven't noticed a difference from using Slow HDD mode so not sure about this. Also that the game doesn't do well to utilise SMT. I've done the Hex edit which maybe seemed to work as a placebo but has subsequently tanked back down to unplayable at times, which I'm not surprised by as the issue rectified by the mod is thread utilisation whereas mine is just being pinned to the floor and beaten! The really strange thing, though, is that I've watched gameplay on youtube using the R5 1400 and people seem to be getting some good performance from it - or at the very least not having it crush everything else around it. I've seen videos of it sat in the 50-60% for usage and I just don't understand what's going on with that? Even an i5 3470 seems to do better than this! I've been planning an upgrade anyway and this has really just spurred me on to do that, but I can't really afford much more than something relatively incremental, eg a used R5 2600. I'm hoping that will help a LOT but how much is that actually going to un-bottleneck me? It seems absolutely fine from other people's experiences but I can't seem to be able to trust that based on my own right now! Anyone having any similar problems or have any ideas on what I should be doing? Thanks in advance!
  8. Hi Guys, I'm having the weirdest issue. Been trying to transplant a PC into a new Antec case from an Optiplex 7010 DT but with mostly different parts. I've kept the CPU, an i5 3470, the HDD and the RAM, but got a different PSU (Riotoro Onyx 750w, very good according to reviews), motherboard and GPU. At first I attempted this with the original Dell motherboard but all its proprietary connectors caused problems, then I tried to workaround the power cable connector and pretty much ended up breaking it and got a cheap Gigabyte H61 instead. With this I put everything together and turned the PC on and the case RGB lighting pulses red, there's no display to the monitor and the CPU fan stops and starts every 10 seconds or so. This is odd, first of all I'm not sure why the case fans do that, do they normally pulse red if something is wrong? Weird, maybe it's a coincidence. Well, I went through the following steps to try to diagnose: Remove GPU and try motherboard video out instead Remove and reseat RAM in different configurations Remove RAM altogether Try different RAM Remove CMOS battery Clear CMOS with jumper Remove all additional fans, SATA drives etc Try different CPU - a working Pentium I had lying around Try different PSU - plugged in necessary power cables from a working ITX PSU I had lying around Nothing worked! Just exactly the same problem again. So I guessed that it surely must be the motherboard at this point. I bought a new one, this time an Asus P8H61 and basically went over all the same steps again, with no luck. Then I bought ANOTHER motherboard, this time an Asus Z68, and it's taken another turn. Now, the CPU LED flashes for half a second and spins the fans, it turns off and starts again infinitely. Surely someone must have some idea somewhere please?
  9. One thing I forgot - with the Asus motherboard, the green light comes on and stays on and the CPU cooler fans don't appear to restart, so I'm not even sure if it's looping any more

  11. I've never used an m.2 drive or anything more high end than a Kingston 480, and I don't understand what the appeal is for the incredibly fast SSDs are considering the diminishing returns towards the high end? How many of you guys use NVMEs and what makes them good value for you personally?
  12. Do you get a page file fault on blue screen? I had a really similar thing with a motherboard a while ago that had a couple of bent pins, which was causing DRAM problems, could be a RAM thing?
  13. I've taken the PSU apart and the PCB inside it smells burnt.. fairly confident it's just that but of course not sure whether these OEMs would have protection from surges etc... I guess it seems realistic that continually being on in a school for God knows how long is going to wear it out significantly over time
