Go with Ubuntu 20.04 or Linux Mint 20 (I hear some Microsoft users find Mint easier to adjust too) and just try with a USB flash drive or a burn a image to disk without installing first or you could always install Virtual Box on your windows and test drive a disto. A further option is to run a duel boot system, just follow the on screen instructions, it's very easy.

At the moment I'm not going to worry too much about EVGA 500w. It's in my second PC which is made up of second hand parts and total build only cost £350.

So I now find out I have two 'Tier E' PSU's in both PC's a EVGA 500W ATX and a Corsair VS550 in the gaming, oh well it's excuse to install modular in both.

Funny you should say that, I have got a DVD writer and yes I have managed to get MX to go past the GRUB loader. Ubuntu seems to be running OK for the moment so for the time being I going to use it on Virtual Box, this way I can have some dummy runs installing and coping with any other issues that may come. With the internet being so bad of late with the lockdown plus we're on old overhead telephone wires here I suspect my connection was interrupted when I was downloading the MX Linux ISO files. I take it your running MX?

I had a problem very much like this few years ago on Kubuntu and in the end I only cured the problem when a friend suggested resitting the ram. Might be worth a try.
