  1. I'm looking into building a home server. I'm looking at what specs people recommend for my situation. The plan is to have this server act as a plex server, run Home Assistant in a docker and run (1) Windows VM used mainly for simple tasks (not gaming) and run Blue Iris for security cameras (could run this in a docker if people think it is better that running it in the Windows VM). I've been looking at UNRAID and the OS, but I'm open to suggestions if there is something better, I'm new to Servers. I would like to use a current gen CPU and would probably allocate 4 cores to the VM. What would everyone recommend for the total cores and Intel vs. AMD. Probably going to use 32GB of RAM in case I want to transcode Plex using RAM. The GPU is where I'm struggling the most. I don't really know what this system needs here. I don't think it would need much power here but I could be wrong, I'm really new to this. My plan for storage is at least (3-4) 12TB drives and then (1) 12-16TB parity drive. I don't have a ton of Media for the Plex server at this time but I'm hoping to expand in the future. Also I will probably be running (4-5) 8MP cameras in Blue Iris and would need enough room for those files. Budget for this project is up in the air, I'm thinking somewhere around $1200-1500 USD for the system and then storage drives on top of that. I'm really open to any suggestions people have and again I'm really new to servers so if there is something better let me know. Here is a pcpartpicker link for most of the components i was thinking about. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qT7qNc Chassis I'm looking at the the https://www.newegg.com/rosewill-rsv-l4412u-black/p/N82E16811147330
  2. When working on future projects and budgets by first go to has always been an excel sheet. My dad is an accountant and I was taught early on excel. Here is a pcpartpicker link. problem here is sometime GPUs don't show prices but the list is here. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dmvpQ6
  3. Not sure about your reasoning for being scammed. The ASUS Z690 board has more VRMs than the B660 board from MSI - even if I don't overclock the CPU the K will boost more than the non K 360 AIO is going to be needed because the 12900 runs extremely hot and yes I'm going for more of a white build hence the white AIO from Corsair I would agree that the DDR5 ram is pretty expensive but that is still due to early adoption. I didn't mention I have a NAS already so I don't need more than 1TB of storage and I would like to go Gen 4 even if it doesn't make a lot of difference in speeds. I could go with a better GPU, but the programs I run don't require a lot of GPU. And you are right 1300W is probably overkill but the way components are heading more power 3-5 years from now if probably needed. I do think that I could maybe choose some lower end products in certain areas of go with a MB that supports DDR4 and probably be just fine but with the 3000 USD budget I would rather spend right up to that for better hardware. But I do appreciate your insight.
  4. Budget (including currency): $3000 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mainly used for graphic design, Adobe Suite, After Effect motion Graphics, light Media Encoding. Not much of a gamer if I do play they won't be AAA hard to run games, even though this system would probably be fine for it. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): This is just for the Computer itself, no monitor or peripherals needed. I currently do most of my work at the office and I'm looking to spend more time at home working from there. There are probably some nice to have like the case fans that some would say aren't needed or too expensive for what they are, but for me the look of the computer is just as important as the performance. I mainly want to know if everyone thinks I'd be better off with other options.
  5. I'm taking over the business from my dad and they had already switched to the NAS before I got here so I don't know what the issue was. I do know the server isn't great. It is running WSB2011 and at this point is only handling logins to the domain. Nothing else is running on the server. This is another reason I'm leaning toward the NAS upgrade, it is a cheaper option than a full new server. My main goal right now is to get us on new hardware for the data we have since the current NAS is probably 7-8 years old, and get us on regular offsite backups.
  6. We do have a local domain. We have tried Window file server in the past and have found the NAS works better for us. I have looked into cloud storage but the cost is higher than I'd like to pay. It has taken us about a year to go from 3TB to 4TB, so I think 8TB should get us through 3-4 years. By then I'll be looking at upgrading anyways.
  7. I'm looking at building (2) new NAS setups. (1) for daily use in my small business (approx. 12 computers sharing the drive), the second NAS for remote off-site backups. I'm looking at either the Synology DS720+ or DS920+. I plan to use Ironwolf Drives in either option. I need 8TB of useable space. My question is I want to have redundancy in the NAS that I will be using locally. Am I better off getting the DS920+ and setting up 4TB drives in raid10 or the DS720+ with 8TB drives in raid1. If I go with the first option and put the 4 drives in raid10, do you think my offsite backup NAS could be the DS720+ with (2) 4TB drives in raid0?
  8. I guess one of the front panel connectors is shorting. I took everything out of the case and started with the bare minumin to Post, and it worked. I slowly kept adding everything until it stopped and that was when I added the front panel HDD led and Reset SW. I don't know if both of them don't work or if it is just one of them but I'm just going to leave them unplugged for now.
  9. I've tried to G-Flash the BIOS but I can't even get into the BIOS and I'm not sure the Q-Flash button on the back is working. The jump drive will flash a couple of times and then stop, but without getting into the BIOS i don't know if it has updated. I'm trying to contact Gigabyte but never know how long that will take.
  10. Just starting to build my son's new gaming rig. Got everything installed and tried to post and I'm not getting any signal on Monitor. There is a red LED light on MOBO indicating the CPU isn't working. Does anyone know if this MOBO need a BIOS flash for the 3000 series Ryzen? Gigabyte support says it doesn't but I don't know what else it could be unless the CPU is DOA. I'm going to try and take my 2700x out of my computer and see if I can get it to Post. I did try and clear the CMOS but that didn't help and I've also tried reseating the CPU and Stock cooler. Any other suggestions I can try before trying to RMA this CPU? 12. Wouldn't a X570 with the gen 4 chipset be better in the future than the B550?

  14. Budget (including currency): $1000-1200 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mainly for gaming. Fortnite & Call of Duty mostly. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Probably just going to play on 1080p right now, might upgrade to 1440p later down the road. This is just the budget for the PC itself nothing else. I have done an AMD parts list and an Intel parts list. I know Intel is better for gaming but want the best bang for the buck which has me leaning towards AMD. I've mainly built computers for work but do I need Windows Pro for home.
