Back in January I purchased an open box return MSI Mech OC 5700 XT (Mistake number one, buying a low end, and open box return) from Ebuyer UK.
This thing truly was the definition of loud and hot. I ran it for a couple of weeks and it was unbareably loud and the core temps peaked around 98C and the junction was constantly hitting 110C. My CPU runs on a cryorig H7 and it's overclocked to all hell, and I've never seen it pass 70C, so this card already had me worried.
Well eventually, the fan actually blew. I don't think this was the cards fault, but probably something fucked with the AMD drivers. I'm talking, I was gaming one minute, herd a bang, instantly stopped my game session, but everything was still running, no crash no blue screen. I turned the PC off, rebooted with the case open and a towel at the ready to douse any fire, and what do you know, the fans not working on the card.
I take it out of the PC and start having a sniff and looking with a magnifying glass, and can't find any obvious blackening or damage to chips, but I can only assume the fan controller died.
I contacted Ebuyer, and they said I could return the card via tracked post, which based on the weight and dimensions of this thing, via royal mail, was £30. I told them I wasn't paying for anything, but they argued it had been over 28 days and it had been opened, so they couldn't accept it as a return or replacement free of charge.
So I got a molex to fan converter and the card continued to run now with 100% fans, but even with a constant fan speed the heat is insane. Maybe it was clocking up a bit better, but it was still regularly hitting 90C and the junction temp was still 110C.
So I bit yet another bullet and repasted the gpu and put new thermal grizzly pads on everything, which helped reduce the core temp significantly to the low 80 range at absolute peak, but that junction still wouldn't drop.
I've now had this card 6 months, and am now having a bunch of visual corruption on screen in games which requires a full system reboot.
In your opinion, considering I've opened this thing, and replaced the heat pads and paste, is there any chance MSI will RMA it at all?
