I'm not unlocking the bootloader yet because I'm still not convinced about security of custom rom

What's custom Rom who trustworthy and why they're trustworthy? Who audit their security to be exact?

I have redmi note 5 and for months didn't get any updates, so I've been thinking to install custom Rom on my phone for the first time (I've got my eyes on Pixel experience). But, I'm a bit worry about the security of custom rom, because I used mobile banking on my phone and frequently do online shopping. So, is custom rom safe to use?
