  1. Thanks Kilrah. Just to be clear...when you say signals or bandwidth, you're referring to the refresh rate? So a 30hz switch will limit my monitors to 30hz?
  2. Greetings, I have a dual monitor setup that i would like to use for both my work laptop and my now home PC build. I currently have a KVM switch but the USB portion stopped working and it also isn't working with the second monitor when connected to my new PC build (GPU is a GTX 1660 Super). Finding a decent KVM can be difficult and is always expensive so I'm going to try just using separate switches for video (x2), audio and USB. My question is pretty basic but I'm not very familiar with video technical aspects. When looking at video switchers, do comments like '1080p@30hz' actually refer to the performance I'll see on my 75hz monitors, or will I still get the full 75hz that both computers are configured at? It seems to me that the switchers are just directing a digital signal and shouldn't affect what's being sent. The video switches I'm looking at are below (I understand that I'll need one for each monitor); reading the questions and comments hasn't been helpful. https://www.amazon.com/HDMI-Switch-4K-Splitter-Bi-Directional/dp/B079JQ9XXV/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KSXWHX7/ref=emc_b_5_t Thanks for reading!
  3. Both of those methods show only what is installed on the new machine. The HDD with the old OS is installed in my new machine, and it contains the files from software installed on the old machine, but those files aren't actually installed on my new machine. I can dig through the files from my old machine folder by folder but I was wondering if there was a quicker way.
  4. I finally got everything delivered and found some time to put it all together. I did a fresh install of Windows and everything went extremely well. The video that Eschew recommended was super helpful. Now I just need to get software installed. I installed the HDD with the old operating system along with the others. After I copy some files from it, I'll format it for a fresh start. Is there a file on that HDD, or another simple way, that would allow me to see all of the programs that I had installed on the old system. I can probably remember most of them but I'd like to be sure to get everything installed now so at some point in the future I don't have to stop what I'm doing to install software.
  5. Ah, ok. Actually, having the OS on the SSD was the plan when I added it but unfortunately that never happened. After watching the video recommended by Eschew, I'm wondering if I should do a clean install on a new SSD. I like the idea of starting fresh and not having my OS tied to a Windows account; I need to think/research the ramifications. But first, I need to find my Windows key. I think the Win 8 key that came with my computer would work but all I can find are old Win 95 and Win XP keys...
  6. Thanks Eschew. Yes, I have Win 10 on one of the HDD's but I've read that with so many new components I might have trouble getting Windows to work. I'll take a look at the video you suggested.
  7. Thanks Jurrunio. What do you mean about the boot drive needs to be flushed?
  8. Greetings, While installing a new GPU in my old computer, the GPU socket pulled off it's pins resulting in the motherboard needing to be replaced (link below if you're curious). I decided to also replace the processor, RAM and case, while reusing the hard drives. When everything is delivered next week, I'd love to be able to put it all together, turn the machine on and pick up from where I left off, but what is the likelyhood of that happening? I'm guessing that it's pretty unlikely. So I'm here to find out what I will need to do to get my new build running and if I can do anything now to be ready. Here's what the components will be: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bcGNHB Prior forum thread: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1182353-will-gtx-1660-super-fitwork-in-my-computer/
  9. Bombastinator / Grabhanem / SteveGrabowski0 / Bitter / Action_Johnson...thanks to all of you for your help! I need to stop analyzing and just get something ordered. It seems like inventories at most stores are really low, so availability will also have an impact on selection. Last night I checked for 3 of the Gigabyte X570 boards at 11 online retailers and found one board available at one retailer (unless I wanted to pay double, or more). Wish me luck!
  10. How much credence should I place on websites like pc-builds.com and their bottleneck calculator? The GTX 1660 and R5 3600 have a 51.84% bottleneck while the GTX 1660 and R5 2600 have a 0.07% bottleneck...
  11. BTW...I selected the Phanteks Enthoo Pro case...
  12. I'm still working on this but I haven't had a lot of free time. Picking a new case was mind-boggling! Regarding the Gigabyte x570 UD motherboard, I may be missing something but it looks to me like it doesn't have wifi. Would I be better picking up a Gigabyte x570 Elite Wifi or adding a wifi card to the UD?
  13. Thanks Action Jackson. Looks like a pretty good plan. If I throw in a new case I'll have a mostly new computer. Two questions (for anyone): 1) If 16GB of DDR4 is good, would 32GB be better? 2) I've been researching upgrading the motherboard and I've seen several comments about Windows licensing with a new motherboard. Anyone know anything about this?
  14. Thanks Bombastinator and Bitter. I'll have to educate myself a bit. I'm not up to speed on motherboards. Not that I 'need' it, but if I go new, I'd be able to upgrade the processor and RAM and get a larger case but I have no idea what price range I'd be into...~$5-600?
  15. The machine is about 6 years old, so no warranty. Some of the pins that are fully out of the socket are already bent. I think I would have to remove the socket, close to perfectly straighten the pins and then push the socket down evenly across it's length. Is that possible? Is there a chance of frying the GPU if I inadvertently short two of the pins (maybe bend one down against another without realizing it)?
