So my current desktop is from about the end of 2012. My OLD pc was an e8500 cpu on a ga-p35-dq6 mobo, and an Nvidia 7900gs, but a customer at work brought me his sons old gaming rig knowing i would find a use for it.
Get it home and look it over and this is what i had:
Corsair CX750m PSU - freshly installed too!
asus m5a99x evo board
amd fx8150 on stock cooler
powercolor Radeon HD 6150
(2x8G) G.skill DDR3-1333
I proceed to hook it all up, fire it up, windows updates, computer does a restart and .... no dice, Doesnt want to post. So i start trouble shooting, pull and reseat the GPU, same with both sticks of ram, fans and drives and poke this prod that restart restart restart. Well this explains why it got a PSU just before it got given to me. They thought it was a PSU problem and when that failed they gave up.
Sometimes it boots to the lock screen fine, sometimes it wont post, sometimes it blue screens or just absolutely hard resets while running. the only time i got CONSISTENT results was when it was pretty much stripped down to mobo / cpu / cooler / psu
So after a good bit of trouble shooting, and lots of swapping things around, and lots of me screaming, I pull the ram out for like the 8th time and a lil fuzz ball comes with it... Que more screaming. If i remember correctly I was yelling "how the FRACK did a cat manage to yack a furball DIRECTLY into a ram slot?" So after treating my ram slots like dirty lil SNES cartridges and installing the Patriot ram from my old PC the problem finally goes away completely.
Over the summer I added a Hyper master 212 evo to replace the dieing stock cooler fan, and 2 more sticks of 8G patriot viper 1866.
So now heres my problem: MY GPU started to act up a lil bit, and i decided to pull it apart so i could clean the cooler and apply new thermal paste, but turns out the PCB looks like its spent its life in a damp salty environment and I figured I should just replace it. I went on craigslist and found a few canidates. An EVGA 1050ti for $150 but didn't get to it in time. Then found a Gigabyte GeForce 1060 WINDFORCE OC 6G for $220 but it was really a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1060 G1 so it was nearly retail price. Hard pass.
So in the end i wound up spending $337.11 on a EVGA 2060 KO Ultra because I HAVE NO FUCKING SELF CONTROL. But also because market rate on used cards is damn near retail right now, so might as well ACTUALLY go retail.
So now i hate the rest of my computer because i put a rtx 2060 in a 2012 Ford Pinto and I'm having a horribly hard time stopping myself from just ordering the parts to copy the LTT $800 Gaming Rig and then converting my current PC into my own Plex server.
Kung Flu isolation is getting to me! Send help!
