  1. I've recently had the money to begin upgrading my PC so now I have a backup computer a la Grandfather's Ship paradox. I don't have many drives for it yet, just an SSD for whatever OS I end up running and a single 4TB Ironwolf, though I will be expanding with more after I finish upgrading my main PC. The end goal is to have a media/storage/minecraft hybrid server with as many drives as my case fits in storage (preferably of the same brand, though maybe varying sizes), but as soon as I get past knowing I need Plex for the media side and somehow getting OpenVPN or similar VPN service running so I can access it when away from home I get a bit lost. I know that TrueNAS and unRAID are the two most popular routes to go, but I can't put my thumb on which one to go for as I have heard to many upsides and downsides of both to make heads or tails of which one would be better in my case. I am leaning towards unRAID, but, again, am unsure. Thoughts?
  2. Hmm. Looks like that one thing I forgot to mention. I'm already running 32gb of ram with a G Skill Ripjaws kit I nicked off Newegg for a decent discount. As for a CPU cooler, I am still running stock cooler which has done well to keep my 1500x around 70 degrees at the hottest but normally around 50ish degree C, I guess that is something I definitely need to check out when I upgrade.
  3. TLDR: Upgrading my Ryzen 1500x to a 7 5800x and my motherboard at the same time. looking for suggestions, but wanting to stick to AMD for the moment. Budget (including currency): 500ish buying preferably through amazon due to a large gift card balance Country: US Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly gaming with some game development and some VM sandbox fun Other details: Current stats CPU: Ryzen 1500x Motherboard: MSI B350M motherboard GPU: NVIDIA 3070ti PSU: Corsair RM850x Case: Corsair iCUE 220T RGB Airflow (would not recommend, very little space for cable management) Currently I am either looking at the MSI MAG X570S Tomahawk Max WiFi or the Asus TUF Gaming X570-Plus Wi-Fi. I wanted on-board Wi-Fi because I don't always have access to an ethernet port and I dislike having to use one of my PCIe slots for a network card. However, this is a not a priority. Beyond that, no preferences on specific features.
  4. I was afraid of, but entirely expecting, that answer lol. Thanks for the assurance mates.
  5. Ah my b. I knew I would forget something in there. It is a ThermalTake Smart 600W
  6. I've got a Ryzen 5 1500x and currently running a GTX 1060 with a 600W power supply. I have a RTX 3070ti in my hands but while going though the manual that came with the card it recommends a 750W power supply. Should I be looking to upgrade my PSU? I have reason to believe that I am fine for now as my power draw with the 3070ti totals to about 440ish on paper but I'd rather not risk the rather large time and money investment I just brought home shooting my shot too early. If I do need an upgrade, are there any recommendation that would take into account a distant CPU upgrade to a Ryzen 7?
  7. So I dropped my headset the other day and the bass is now all wonky on one side. In case I can't do anything about it warranty wise (I think its out of date but I have to wait until tomorrow to call and check), I've been looking at headsets. I don't have a DAC and I don't plan on looking for one... yet, so I've been looking around for a good pair at or below ~$100 US. So far I've found, both from this forum and others, HyperX line (Cloud Flight and Cloud 2's), Corsair HS60 Haptic or Pro, Razer BlackShark V2 Pro Wireless, K371's, M40x's, Sennheiser 569's, Takstar 82's, MH-751's. I care about audio quality first (for movies and gaming), build quality second (because I can be a little accident prone) and mic quality last since I can always just buy an external mic, but having a mic is nice since I would still have to buy the external mic as well otherwise. Wireless is nice if nothing above is compromised too badly. I do tend to like my bass, but I have pretty balanced music preferences if that factors in at all. Other recommendations would be appreciated.
  8. So I've had my eye on the Lg 27gl650F-B on amazon since its bigger brother the Lg 27gl83A-B sold out this morning. a $350 monitor on sale for $200 is pretty nice looking to my novice eyes but I was wondering if I should take the shot to my wallet now and buy a 1080p, 144hz monitor with 1ms response ISP panel and free-sync with g-sync compatibility or should I wait until cyber monday and hope there's something as good or better. I don't want to spend more than $300 on a monitor which is why I usually wait for these sales so I can get something actually worth the money I put into it. I also plan on upgrading my rig to specs that can handle 1440p at 144hz but that won't come for a while unless a really good deal on GPUs comes around on cyber monday so I can pick up a nice RX 5700 XT.
  9. So I’ve been slowly upgrading my pc and I decided that my monitor is one of the first investments I should choose. Right now I have some 1080p, 60hz display I picked up on the cheap about two years ago coupled with a GTX 1060 that came with the rig that I bought around the same time. Because I tend to play large amounts of FPS and rhythm games, I know I should be getting a higher refresh rate monitor so I’m prioritizing refresh rate over resolution, though if I can squeeze by with a 1440p for when I replace my GPU with something a little more modern (keeping my fingers crossed for a good deal come cyber Monday for a good rx 5700 xt) I would like that a lot. I found a monitor on amazon that has been discounted: the lg 25GL650f-b on sale for $200 down from $350 https://www.amazon.com/LG-27GL650F-B-Ultragear-Compatible-Monitor/dp/B07R7636MH/ the monitor has pretty much everything I need, namely the high refresh rate and a low pixel response time. It also has a few other neat things like g-sync compatibility, free-sync, and an IPS panel for when I play some RPGs or edit some videos in my off time. However it is also a 1080p on a 27” panel and I’ve heard people say that the pixel density is too low. There is also the factor of me upgrading my rig so longevity of my hardware is a priority next to refresh rate and I feel that 1080p might not be enough once I get things upgraded to the point that I can handle 1440p fairly well. this is where the above monitor’s big brother comes in: the lg 27GL83A-B https://www.amazon.com/LG-27GL83A-B-Ultragear-Compatible-Monitor/dp/B07YGZL8XF/ this does all that the 650 does but in addition to being in 1440p. The draw back is that the 83 is only on sale for $320 from $380 the big question is whether or not the 83 is worth the extra $180 for longevity’s sake or take the much more obvious deal of the 650 and cough up the money for another monitor in a year or two.
