    Nixie tubes!

I just got a kit a few days ago! Got some ZM1082 Mullard-Phillip tubes I'll make a post with the construction of it in the next month or so. Need to find my soldering iron and all the other stuff to assemble it. Should be a fun project! Sounds good, I'll keep a look out for it
  3. Brilliant! That's great news!! Thanks
  4. Thanks, that's really appreciated. I'll be sure to do that. That's probably right... They really do make it tricky. Most people would just give up I guess
  5. Yea luckily I have I heatsink spare and she already has the power supply and graphics card upgraded. Obviously she can't afford to just buy a CPU if it doesn't work so that's why I'm trying to find out if its possible beforehand If it is, can it easily be unlocked?
  6. Any chance you could point me to a way of doing this. Haven't had to deal with premade systems like Dell before
  7. Hi everyone, A friend has come to me with a question which I want to help them out with. They currently have an Dell Inspiron 660 with a Pentium G2030 on the stock motherboard. Thing is that the pentium is bottlenecking their new graphics card so hard and they want to upgrade to an i5 that'll fit the same socket so that they only have to replace the cpu and not the motherboard. The motherboard is a Vostro 270 84J0R so surely it has a standard LGA1155 socket. Therefore she could buy an i5 3340 and it should work right?? The only reason for my concern is I heard that Dell might lock the BIOS to prevent upgrading CPU's??? Is this true? Thanks for any help

    Nixie tubes!

Yup, the prices are pretty extortionate. They are collectors items though I guess. They'll only continue to rise in price as the number of working tubes slowly drops! I think the lowest price I've seen for a full PCB with 6 tubes included is about £120.

    Nixie tubes!

El Psy Congroo Yea, I'm a fan too Looks like a very nicely made design. That casing looks great. I'll check them out

    Nixie tubes!

Usually I'd be straight on eBay but for something like these tubes I'm a little wary of receiving duds. I guess I'd just have to find a reputable seller who performs checks on the tubes they sell. Also, funny you posted that video! I'm subscribed to Tested but that didn't show up in my inbox. Thanks Youtube...

    Nixie tubes!

Hey guys, Was wondering if anyone has any things lying around that contain Nixie tubes. They've become a new fascination of mine, its like they hypnotize me every time I see them I was thinking of getting a Nixie clock at some point to start a collection! The large tubes look especially beautiful but even the tiny little front facing ones are just wonderful. For anyone who hasn't seen one before they look like this: They usually display the digits 0-9 and some have decimal places too. They're becoming pretty popular again nowadays despite ceasing production quite a long time ago. Seems that everywhere I look I see something that has a Nixie tube in it! Shame they're so damned expensive for anything taller than an inch
  12. Fair enough, I'll stress test it for half an hour and see what happens. Hopefully this weekend I'll have some time to reseat the CPU too.
  13. Brilliant! I've fixed it! I set the voltages all to auto in the BIOS and edited the core voltage to have a voltage offset of -0.100V. Just tried prime95 and got temperatures around 65C after 3 minutes of testing So much better than 100C after 1 second My idle temps are now at about 35-40 too, seems much better. Thanks everyone for the help, it was greatly appreciated. I'm sure if I hadn't know and kept fiddling with the cooler I could have gotten very frustrated
  14. Yup, done that. Nothing happened from what I can tell. Just ran prime95, still at 100C load. No voltage change, still 1.265V on the core. What should I change them to?
  15. Ok, went into the BIOS and found the ASUS multi core enhancement. I switched it to disabled: That seems to have not really had an effect. Here are the voltage settings: So yeah, what do you think I should change? EDIT: I have no clue why those pics are upside down They're fine when viewed seperately
