  1. Whats a good way to fix this from happening
  2. I have a fairly new 2tb NVME drive, never had an issue. Out of nowhere all of my shortcuts are broken(picture), and the physical files are missing from 95% of the folders on the drive, however, the folders are still there(picture). I can still install new games on this drive, and load them, but everything that was installed from xbox game pass is broken, as well as battle.net, etc. Steam still works fine, as well as anything I reinstall. I have tried CHKDSK (it did detect a corrupted recycle bin), sfc scan etc. Any ideas at all?
  3. Awesome thank you, also that m.2 expansion is interesting for sure. I still have 2 open slots on my mobo for those though. This is strictly large movie storage that I needed to expand, but I already have 4 sata slots in use.
  4. I am clueless on pcie expansion cards. I am out of sata ports on my MB and just want to add more for a couple 8tb drives on my system that I may pool together for movie storage. Are these just plug and play with windows? I don't want them to be in any raid etc, just 2 new drives.
  5. Is there any other products/solutions anyone recommends before I commit to a full upgrade path? I do have direct line of sight, the metal however is metal and isn't penetrating properly, it drops to 2-3mb inside, and 400+ outside so I need to connect from the outside to inside somehow, underground cable is also not an option due to location, driveway, and missouri ground being mostly rock
  6. I am needing to extend my internet out to an outbuilding that I have turned into a house for family I am taking care of, I have fiber optic 1gb speeds. The building is roughly 100ft from my residence. I was thinking of going with an https://store.ui.com/collections/operator-airmax-devices/products/nanobeam-5ac-gen2 for the bridge to building. Once on the inside I am not sure how I should proceed, should I bring cable in and run from a switch to the bedrooms adding another couple hundred to the price, or since I do already have a https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07953S2FD?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details (tp-link extender), would it be fine to just connect this in the building and supply wifi to the entire building? I am not sure if the units would conflict with each other, networking is not my strong suit, but I know the general basics to make it all work. Cost is a factor as I am 4 grand in the hole building and moving family in. Thanks
  7. Yea I fought with myself on the cpu/gpu, I went back and forth between 3950x and 5700xt, or a better 3900 and 2070super, the graphics are already an amazing upgrade though and my monitor is now more a bottleneck than anything. I do other things on my rig as well (home studio, learning to video edit, etc.) so I guess it is more my main workstation that can game nicely than a gaming rig.
  8. Thanks I will keep an eye on it, it should be okay with the reinforced socket, I hope anyway.
  9. I upgraded from an I5 6600k and R9 390 build in 2012, so that gaming increase is amazing. (prices don't reflect what I paid) I need to find a way to disable the red lighting, or make it white, same with the Gigabyte lettering. Cable Mods coming soon, hoping to get some decals for it, I have a couple that might fit it nicely. Thanks all for any advice that was given to me also.
  10. I appreciate the tips given by those who provided it, I will look into the 1.1.1.2/3 settings more, Microsoft family, and malwarebytes is a given on any of my computers. Those saying just let him learn how to fix it, you missed the entire point of the topic. He has been learning computers with me since 6, he knows quite a bit, but that doesn't change the fact we have pedophiles and ass hats making things like ransomware, rootkits, and programs to access and screw up your entire life by clicking a wrong link, yes he will be taught those things as he ages, but most don't understand the nastiness of the world until adulthood, I plan to let him enjoy his childhood for now. Thanks again for the tips provided.
  11. No thank you on Avast Also, telling a teenage kid not to look at free porn links is like telling people not to touch their face right now, it's going to happen. Thanks for the info
  12. I will have to study up on this, I didn't know this was a thing that could be done. would this affect any gaming apps like steam, or youtube for him?
  13. So I am about to pass on my previous gaming pc to my soon to be teenage son, I am trying to figure out the best way to "lock it down", I am not trying to block him from "learning things" as most do or did, I am trying to save the PC from spyware, malware, rootkits, etc. And not be overloaded by virus's when he "learns things". Besides the normal antivirus, malware, spyware etc programs, is there anything else i don't know about? Would like him not to be able to move files or delete files either for drive safety also. Sorry if wrong area to post, seemed the best fit.
  14. There will be minor OC, I won't be pushing it to the extremes, but it's for future headroom, and it was cheaper than buying the reasonable PSU.
  15. Final build and bought, some items were chosen due to no stock. The 850w supply is more than needed, but 600 & 750 cost the same and $100 more respectively. Thank all for the input and ideas. (Prices are not accurate to what I paid)
  16. This is what I think the final build will be, thoughts? Pretty similar to the original, some things have gone out of stock in the last 24 hours.
  17. so I have done a couple other builds, and they all come out to about $2100-2200 even lowering cooler, graphics, board etc. I think i am just going to lower the cooler to a bequiet and not an aio, I am also going to bump the ram to 3600 ripjaws. I will play a bit more with pricing while at work and see what happens, but so far the extra 200 bucks for what is already listed seems to be the best deal. Or drop $200 off the card and throw that extra $200 on a 3950x
  18. Yea I am thinking of dropping to a 2070 super, 2080 seems a bit overkill for my needs, any troubles streaming with it? I only stream with friends sometimes.
  19. Yes, I know I could pull better with a monitor but this is what I have
  20. I would like to play at 1440 or higher, though I know most games work best in 1080, I also don't use a conventional monitor, I use a 55in 4k tv. I didn't think about the back plating so thanks for that input, ill be spending most of the day looking at tweaks, deals, combos, upcoming sales, etc
  21. Gonna pull the trigger on this in the next day or two, if anyone cares to share any deals, combos, etc that may be better $ spent.
  22. So after looking at GPU's more, I don't see the multi hundred dollar price difference for a 2080 super, and maybe I'll just go 5700xt, again I am average gamer, unless someone can shed some light I am missing.
  23. The cooler would save me about $70, I have no experience with this brand but all the reviews seem positive. So that's a positive already. I know the board is a bit much, I am still debating with this one. The intel is actually more expensive then the WD atm that's why I went this route. The psu i am using in my current build, I know its also a bit of over kill but I have never had a problem with it, and I am just future proofing like the MOBO. I would just swap the one I have but I am passing this PC to my son. I am open to other cases, I have always used NZXT so I tend to follow their lines, I HATE rgb also, so I don't care about anything fancy, it's not a show machine, its my daily everything. I have never ventured outside MSI so I am just following what I know, if you have any recommendations please post them. The ripjaw is G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
  24. I'm assuming this is a common combo for most newer builds, just looking for pros, cons, better options, etc. I'm an average gamer, have a home studio, and stream some times with friends. I am also planing on keeping this pc for many years. I know the MOBO is a bit much, but this is for any future upgrades, expanding, etc. The prices are not exact, I plan to price check everything before purchase.
