Superhot review
There are certain things you feel weird after finishing be it a movie, TV series, a book or a game there could be many reasons for it but in the case of superhot it was because this game had great things going for it but it was over too soon before things could fully flesh out.
Surprisingly of all the things this game could remind me of this game reminded me of FNAF or five nights at Freddie’s possibly because of its cryptic story or for lack of a better word lore.
Enough with the introduction, let’s talk about the title of this video “The most innovative shooter I’ve played in years “this isn’t my statement. This is the first thing the game says to you. I don’t know about the word most but it is innovative not for a single reason but for mixing all the things that the game has into a complete package.
There are many things to like about this game but first the game play this game has one of the best most engaging and interesting mechanics out there so it is a real shame that this gameplay loop is obstructed several times with 2-5 minutes story segments which completely play against the strengths of this game.
Let’s talk about the art style first it complements the gameplay perfectly in fact it is one of those art styles that if you see once you can remember not only is it visually striking its simple nature means unlike in many fps games enemies are clearly visible against the background. This is clearly told by the colours Black means you can interact with the object and Red means you fucking kill it.
Let’s talk about the gameplay.
The objective is very simple there are enemies clearly visible due to their red colour and you have kill them by shooting slashing or smashing them till they become red shards.
It takes one hit to kill and 1 hit to die.
Everyone knows about the fact that this game pauses time if you don’t move though it actually slows time if you don’t move but doesn’t completely stop the flow. This has two effects even if the game moves slowly, time is very crucial. This game is highly tactical much more than most modern tactical shooters .The targets are to be chosen carefully, choosing the wrong target will get you killed. Choosing the wrong weapon will get you killed, moving in the wrong direction will get you killed.
Moreover guns have limited ammo and melee weapons are destroyed after one throw so you have to constantly change from one weapon to another.
Midway through the game we see another mechanic but for the sake of spoilers I won’t discuss it. It is not as interesting as the other mechanics but I liked it.
Now let’s discuss something I didn’t like the story it’s boring when I get in the flow of the game there is always a story segment that’s stops that brings the flow to a standstill meaning it is more annoying than it is interesting.
The story doesn’t work it does not play to the games strengths and its metanarrative gives too little information.
