  1. Hi everyone! Lately I've noticed my internet speed dropping radically during certain hours of the day. I have a feeling my older brother is Torrenting a LOT because I've noticed them pop up on his computer when he's showing me something. I've recently asked him multiple times if he is torrenting and he constantly claims he isn't, despite a couple times I actually went and checked his computer when he was at work and Low-and-behold, he was torrenting. Shutting them down drastically imporved internet speed for everyone else in the house. Lately I can't do that though. As he has put a password on his computer. I would just shut down his computer when he's out but I'm not sure if he's running important things while it's locked. Our advertised internet speed is 15Mbps (I know it's not much but in NZ that's average) but the times I suspect he's torrenting it drops to anywhere between 50Kbps-400Kbps. Attached is a picture of our network map. It's layed out strange for some reason so I'll explain it. F9J1002 v1 is the Main Modem/Router connected to the copper lines outside - "Dads computer" Is directly connected to it. - "Macwireless Guest" Is directly connected to it. (I'm not sure why it shows it as a seperate connection because it's literally just a router, not a modem" -The devices connected to this are of no importance at the moment as they are rarely used, and aren't good for much other than emails and Facebook. - "Switch 1" Is a switch we have in the roof that connects all our wired in computers to F9J1002 v1, it is our "Mother Switch" -Router "F9K1002 v1 is my personal wireless router so I can connect my many wireless games consoles/devices to the network without interfereing with other peoples connections. -"Liams Computer" is My computer with Admin rights on ALL wireless Routers/Modems - "Switch 2" Is a switch my brother installed in his room when he moved home. - "Vostro-3400" Is his computer and the suspected Torrenting machine. - "Switch 2" is another switch he installed in his room when he came home, God knows why. He has stuff all computers in his room. - "Media Server" is literally just that. A networked server for movies/music and some games. What I'm asking is, is there a way to know for certain if he is torrenting? His PC is locked 90% of the time and I have a limited knowledge of networking (More advanced than everyone in my family and most regular people but no expert knowledge) Sorry if this is in the wrong area, feel free to move it.
  2. Ok so I just bought a Belkin N300 Modem Router to replace my old and dead D-Link Modem and my old D-Link Router. I have run in to an issue though, in that routers can supposedly only support 16 devices wirelessly at any one time. And I have more than 16 wireless devices trying to access the network wirelessly from throughout the house. I have an old TP-Link N300 router handy and was wondering if I could set it up as a second access point, or something similar. the main use being that it can expand the capacity by an aditional 16 devices. Is this possible? or will my netowrk still be limited to 16 devices? Belkin Modem Router - http://www.belkin.com/in/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=590457 TP-Link Router - http://www.tp-link.com/lk/products/details/?model=TL-WR941ND I've read it's possible to connect the two together via ethernet and have the second one broadcasting a separate SSID, but im not 100% on if it actually expands the amount of devices.
  3. PB278Q 1440p in NZ is $859 at it's cheapest :C big sad face. Why does everything have to cost so bloody much >.<
  4. $1 US = $1.20 NZ so it's about $601.50 and $962.50 respectively, not including tax over here, which would boost it to about $700 and $1200 ._. f*#king taxes
  5. Also unfortunately because I live in New Zealand, it seems all the good technology won't be out in this country until it's already out dated. We are only just getting internet speeds over 15Mbps....
  6. I wish everything I wanted could exist in the here and now :c I don't require a 4K but it would be nice, anything over 1080p would be welcome. I'm gonna be using it for a bit of everything, graphic design, movies, gaming etc. Cheers for the heads up, is this $800 US or...? I might look into that Asus monitor, thanks Cheers for the heads up on DVI vs 4k, expensive would be over $1500 NZD anywhere between $500 and $1500 NZD I guess...
  7. Hi all! I'm currently in the market for a good quality 4K monitor. I have a few non-negotiable traits when it comes to it though. - It has to have VESA mounting on the back of it, of any size. - It has to be between 30 inches and 39 inches maximum. - It has to have DVI input. I don't want anything too expensive, but obviously for a 4k monitor, that is a huge ask. Alternatively a 1080p monitor or even something just a bit higher than that such as a 2560 x 1440 (preferably higher than 1080p) monitor would suit. but the same restrictions still apply. I have been searching for a while and nothing seems to jump out at me. Any help in my search would be greatly appreciated. I have had a look at some TV's and though there are some cheap ones on the market at the moment, none of them seem to suit what I need. I know you can get adapters to go from HDMI to DVI but that just doesn't appeal to me. Also on a side note, it's preferable that the inputs face down as this will be wall mounted, and I don't want any cables bulding out of the back of my monitor and damaging my walls. Cheers for any help Guys and Gals.
  8. Yeah I currently have a brand new Modem/Router at the flat. My laptop connects perfectly fine to the internet. it's just the desktop -> Laptop connection that seems to be the issue. My parents house on the other hand, the router's internal date doesn't even go past 2011, even with the latest firmware. It's a horrible D-Link thing. I've told them countless times it's the source of all their issues but they never listen. It's just my connection at the flat that is annoying me now.
  9. Ok so first off, sorry if this is in the wrong place. So I did a horrid n00b. Ok, I live in a flat, and the only internet connection avaliable is wireless. I have a latop with wireless and a Desktop with only a wired connection (all PCI-e slots are taken up by graphics cards). My desktop is running Win 7 and my laptop is running Win 8.1 (which I have heard is notorious for bad wi-fi connections) Now here is my issue, a few days ago it was working fine, i was able to share my wireless connection via my Laptop's gigabit ethernet port to my Desktop (which is obviously my primary computer). All was working perfectly fine, I had all the right settings set (Network adapters > "share this connection to other users" etc) I went home to visit my parents and while I was there I connected to their Wi-Fi (well tried to, for some reason my laptop has issues with their wifi and despite being right next to the wireless router, I had "limited or no connectivity - no internet connection" appearing. This was odd because my 2 siblings had perfectly fine wireless connections, as did my smart phone. I did some googling and found a step-by-step about how Win 8 and 8.1 are notorious for Wi-Fi issues and gave me a bunch of netsh.exe commands to run. I followed the step by step, which got me to disable 2 things and I believe enable rss (I believe). and funnily enough, I was still having the connection issues so I decided to go to give up and go be social (ew social interaction) I returned home to my flat and plugged in my laptop as I usually do, power and ethernet to share the internet connection. But something was up, despite having all the right sharing settings, my desktop keeps telling me there is no internet connection on the "unidentified wired connection" yet my laptop says there is no issue. Going into the diagnose tool on my desktops ethernet adapter, its saying there is no valid ip config on either end of the wired connection and to go into tcp-ipv4 and set it to dynamically change from static ip etc. The strange thing is, on both ends it was already dynamic. I just got my CCNA and Microsoft Admin Quals and I'm having such a n00b moment and it doesn't help I have a migrane and just got back from a long day of retail work. Any insight and help would be much appreciated.
  10. Holy crap-a-mole! Thanks for the heads up, man! I let my brother know and he's gonna try contact the people he got it from and tell them what has happened. Hopefully they will do the right thing and replace it with a more reliable one. Never even looking at an Aywun product again.
  11. I think I have the issue sorted, thanks to skills passed down from my father. Screwed this piece of wood onto the back of the desk (flush with the back) and then I'm going to attach this (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=684909835) onto the back plate that's been made and mount it on there. A bit disappointed that it wont be hanging but still chuffed I've managed to sort it. Cheers
  12. I was thinking this but its seems most wall mounts rely on gravity to keep the joints stiff....
  13. Hey guys! Just wanted some opinions and advice on my new idea for mounting my monitor. What I have at the moment was a 3 Tier, home made computer desk. What I was wanting to do was attach a VESA mounting mechanism hanging from the top shelf of the desk to have my Asus 24" monitor "floating" in a sense off the desk. I was thinking of putting a retention bracket on the top of the shelf to give it a good support. I was wondering if there was such a VESA mounting system and what your thoughts on this are. I'm moving into a new place soon so I'm a bit skint for money. but I also have limited space so mounting the monitor from the top shelf means I have more room on the desk surface itself. Cheers in advance (Sorry if this is in the wrong area and also sorry for making it hard to understand.)
  14. Sorry, yes. I meant 1150 socket motherboard. I was in a hurry to write the post before i went to work. Although he chose better parts, I chose the others to try save him some money, he ended up spending about $250NZD more than what I originally had. He got win8 ent from a friend for cheap even though it's designed for corporate systems etc. I've told him it's most likely the PSU but he refuses to believe it. and he wants to use his computer for recording gameplay and posting to Youtube. ._. Some people. I have no issues with helping people but seriously, there's a difference between help and convincing someone ignorant and arrogant that they are wrong. Thanks guys
  15. Ok. So seeing as I just got my CompTIA A+ cert my older brother just got me to build him a computer. So me being organised I made a list of parts. The original list; -Samsung Evo 840 250gb SSD -Gigabyte GTX 770 OC -Gigabyte GA-Z77 Mobo -I7 3770K @3.5ghz socket 1155 -Asus PCE-AC86 -Corsair AX860i -16gb Kingston @1866mhz Now my brother being my brother (thinking he knows better) He changed the list of parts and ordered different to what I told him would be good. He changed the Mobo to the new 1156 socket got an i7 4770k changed the GPU to a Radeon R9 280x and changed the psu to an Aywum 750w (it cost $45NZD!) to save money for the new GPU. He contacted me the other day telling me that his computer restarts and powers off at random and that nothing works the way it should. He decided he would take it a step further and upgraded the windows 7 ultimate 64-bit I provided with the PC to windows 8 ENTERPRISE (Facepalm) and was complaining that he couldn't play games. Please someone post something logical on here to back up my saying that it's the PSU causing the faults and that he should have left win7 on. He doesn't believe me.
