Hey everyone, I'm building a new PC for myself and decided to give the old one to a friend. I opened it up today to clean it, and decided to unmount the CPU fan to get at it from a better angle.
After putting it back together and powering up, it crashes after about a minute. Entering the BIOS, I can see the CPU temp very quickly reaches 100°C, when it powers off. The CPU fan is properly seated.
I did not clean the old thermal paste on the CPU or CPU fan heat spreader, or reapply thermal paste when detaching it for dusting, could this be the issue? It would start up normally before, but could disturbing the thermal paste have caused this? Would cleaning both and applying new thermal paste potentially fix the issue?
I know this question may sound dumb, but I'm just not sure how much of a difference it would make (also, I have thermal paste coming but it won't arrive for 2 days so I'm just seeing if theres anything I could try in the meantime).
Thanks
