  1. My Dad is almost 80 so a chromebook is very tempting. Especially since Im the one always fixing things ... maybe I can find a similar site to pokerstars that will keep him occupied and runs via the web. Otherwise he doesnt travel so a desktop is fine, he is using an old HP all in one so upgrading is just difficult and Id probably break the case around the monitor or something....
  2. the chromebook idea is tempting but the only thing keeping my dad sane is pokerstars. He doesnt only play the poker tables but he does try other stuff too so not sure if android would be enough.
  3. My dad only surfs the web, email, and pokerstars application. There is a little video streaming as well with some of the sites he goes too. Im thinking about getting him this Optiplex 9020 Small Form Business Desktop Mini Tower Computer PC (Intel Core i5-4570, 16GB Ram, 256GB SSD, WiFi, DVD-RW) Win 10 Professional The biggest issue is that it comes with Display port. If I got a display port to HDMI cable would it out full 1080p? I have a decent monitor with only hdmi to give him.
  4. Im thinking of getting my father a computer. All he needs is a system to browse websites and maybe watch youtube videos even at 480p would be better than what he is doing now. Im thinking about buying this system. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B071HG7FLH/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?smid=AO8B532XMKOWW&psc=1 (I have an extra HD monitor Ill give him) This is his current system https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c04212852 Thoughts?
  5. good news I mucked up and copied the wrong specs for the system. It has 3gs of ram and I totally agree 1 wouldnt be enough. I just dont know the cpu very well. I typed the power supply model in right off the sticker so that should be fine, except for it being dead.
  6. Im looking to replace my HP A6000 desktop power supply and give to my dad for his websurfing. More specifically the power supply is: Bestec ATX-300-12Z Two questions. 1. I know nothing about power supplies. What kind of standards should I be looking for? I can I replace with the same from Newegg, I just wonder if I can get better for cheaper. 2. Is a 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 4200+ CPU and boasts 1 GB of RAM, a 250 GB SATA 7200 rpm hard drive spec system still worth getting for surfing web? Any advice much appreciated
  7. I have a LG G5, it has USB-C can I split the port and charge it while it I export the video to my monitor at the same time? Thanks
  8. I through in a Sapphire Radeon HD 3650 with 512 mb of ram and it works fine at 1650x1050 but craps out when dropping out to play rocket league... Does this card actually draw more power than a gtx 1050? Im starting to think there is a problem with the PSU. (This PC might just go to my father )
  9. thats what I was thinking.... Id love to upgrade the GPU so I can play some rocket league and work on a 4k monitor.
  10. This is the model of PSU Im trying to replace. https://www.ebay.com/c/28021428115 Ive never changed a PSU so I dont know how to find out if will get the appropriate. I was thinking of bring it to CanadaComputers and see what they say. Do you think this will be possible? Thanks for any tips.
  11. Im mucking around with various parts and got a PC put together. I was just got a Sapphire Radeon HD 3650 512MB and a lg 43ud79-b. I was wondering is there anyway to get at least 1440p out of this.... Id need to use DVI out of the video card. and HDMI or DisplayPort in to the monitor (Unless you got another idea)
  12. Someone offered me an old PSU and full sized case. I think the computer inside was a core 2 duo to give you an idea of the era of PC. Ive never built a computer and its be ages since I upgraded a system. Are the cables from an old PSU still compatible with current systems? What about the case Im pretty sure full ATX has been around forever are current motherboards compatible? etc thank for any discussion....
  13. 14-15 inch is good. 4hrs+ of battery life would be good. Budget 1400 or 1500 CAD. That being said I think Im leaning towards getting this Dell XPS 13. https://deals.dell.com/en-ca/productdetail/2xz8 Guess if I ever getting to gaming more than Rocket League I can get a GPU and thunderbolt external case. Thoughts?
  14. What laptop should I get. I have a 4k external screen and Ive gotten use to light weight systems.... Im not a gamer really. Rocket League and board games is all I play. Im leaning towards getting the asus zenbook ux434fl I want 16gb of ram. What attracts me to this is the portability, i7 processor and the 16gbs of ram.
  15. Do you have an Asus Zenbook 14 UX434FL? Ive been looking at this laptop. I was wondering what kind of battery life you've been getting. Can the second screen be shut off to increase battery life? Odd question but ever try linux? Do you think the second screen would work in Linux? Anything interesting you found by using it? I wish it had thunderbolt so I can add more devices to it. Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks
  16. @Vexicus Thanks for the budget option but the CPU is important to me also, just not a gaming rig. I feel like a Ryzen 3 is too low and the reducing the ram isnt a bad option for what I do but Ill probably stick with 16 just cause its cheap and its always good to have more ram
  17. thanks thats what I would expect. Im thinking about getting the 3400G cpu. Should I be worried about the BIOS warning or will that be an upgrade I can apply without an full OS?
  18. Should I expect the CPU to have thermal paste already applied?
  19. Thanks guys this helped my decision process a lot
  20. I upgraded systems in the past but never built one from scratch so am I missing anything? Any part do you recommend to be changed? Im not trying to make a super powerful PC. The most powerful game I play rocket league otherwise Im not a gamer other than board games on websites Should I buy exhaust fan? I have also 2 SATA drives (1 SSD 2.5" and 1 HDD 3.5") Thanks for any tips PCPartPicker Part List Type Item Price CPU AMD Ryzen 5 2400G 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Processor $168.25 @ Vuugo Motherboard Gigabyte B450M DS3H Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $99.99 @ Amazon Canada Memory OLOy 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400 Memory $66.99 @ Newegg Canada Case Corsair Carbide Series 275R ATX Mid Tower Case $89.99 @ Amazon Canada Power Supply EVGA 500 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply $61.50 @ Vuugo Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts Total $486.72 Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-08-29 10:03 EDT-0400
  21. Im debating going cheap for a while until Im ready in a year to go big. My current setup is a surface pro 4 i5-6300U cpu with 4g ram Would it be worth selling it and getting: Intel Core i5-4570T (2.9GHz) 8GB DDR3 - https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=7_158&item_id=129419 or Intel Core i5-4570 (3.2GHz) 8GB - https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=7_158&item_id=123125 or Intel Core i5-3470 (3.20 GHz) 8GB DDR3 - https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=7_158&item_id=121026 or AMD A6-7310 2 GHz Graphics AMD RADEON R4 DDR3 12GB DDR3 SDRAM Keep in mind, I wont have my surface pro any more so it needs to be better than what I had. I need to run a 4k display comfortably. Highest end game I play is rocket league and fine playing it at 720p medium settings already on my surface pro. (Currently my laptop doesnt run 4k comfortably) Any thoughts? (Thanks for any input)
  22. Do you think this will run at 4k alright. (The Dell Optiplex 7010) Im currently running a surface pro 4 with 4g of ram at almost 4k so Id at least want to this to be better Thanks for all the help everyone
