Like I said, I think that by default normal game audio etc. from computer (through both optical and HDMI) is uncompressed / PCM. Only difference is how many channels can be sent, optical only has stereo, HDMI 5.1 (7.1?). So if he uses HDMI -> Optical converter, number of channels would depend on the converter. I guess a cheap stupid converter would just strip the extra audio channels and only send the 2 front speakers. Are there more expensive ones that can do the audio encoding to 5.1 AC3/DTS?
Btw, I'll add links to the Realtek "unlocked" drivers, if you use a Realtek audio chip. But the setup process wasn't very user friendly when I last time tried to set them up.
