  1. Yeah, always called it 2k for some reason, no idea why
  2. Hello All, So the other day I asked about Ryzen and motherboards, I got my new build running but I am now looking at the next bits that may arrive next week on payday. So first is the GPU, I have an R9 290 currently and I am thinking of moving to a 1080 for 1440p gaming, likely at something around 120fps. First is it worth paying for a new GPU? while my 290 can crush 1080p at around 90fps, I don't think it will cope so well on 1440p. Secondly is my case, last year I purchased a Phanteks Evolv mATX which is a beautiful case but with summer coming around its flaws are beginning to show massively. I still have my old Fractal Design Define R4 just collecting dust and I am thinking of switching back to that and building a little NAS inside my Phanteks, this will also allow me to put a manual fan controller in as my motherboard doesn't have many connectors and I have yet to put my AIO on. What are your suggestions? Many Thanks
  3. Okay so been doing some more info digging. The CPU I am really happy with, its performing well and I expect now it should be even better with a lot of the early bugs worked out of the BIOSes, I also see that the CPU loves fast memory, so some 3000Mhz RAM is on the order list, for the sake of £20 I may as well. The motherboard is still the main subject of stopping me currently, the Gigabyte one I wanted is a good board but the emphasis on powering 10g 3.1 instead of keeping the VRMs power to the CPU concerns me a little bit, I would much rather my power be sent to a major component that USB, plus 10G networking is easy done to my NAS. So the search continues I am currently looking at ASUS but not passive coolers on the VRM at the moment
  4. Yeah I like it, got it because its modular and my old one was around 4 years old.
  5. My PSU is not a NEX, suppose it could be called a proper PSU in this regard, but according to the box its a Supernova 620W G2, no mention of NEX which I know they have. Additionally crossfire is not something I am bothered about, I generally get the best single GPU I can afford, plus Xfire/SLI is not that well supported. I did look at intel's offering but it was like £50 extra from my local retailer as an example and I would imagine game dev's may now start programming for multicore systems. The motherboard is not much concern although I do prefer Gigabyte, always had good stability with them.
  6. Hi All, So about 2 months ago my old LGA 1155 motherboard died and this month I will have enough money to rebuild my machine finally. So I am looking at the 1700 CPU to compliment my R9 290 (Will likely upgrade to Vega), this GPU is fine currently as I am only playing at 1080p at the moment, 4k is a future plan. My current plan is this https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/9RWk7h I already have an EVGA Supernova 650W, 500GB SSD and a 2TB HDD, also I have a Seidon 120mm AIO but I am unsure if its actively supporting the new sockets. all to be stored in my Phanteks Evo mATX What would you change about this build? it will be mostly for gaming and light VMs, could it be cheaper without sacrificing performance? Many Thanks
  7. well its amazing really, I mean okay for legacy applications this maybe a good enough reason to keep it going internally off the internet, but for newer generation applications I would always go for Python3. Heck place I work still uses vb6, although granted they are making a massive push to .NET which is welcoming.
  8. I agree, I only have python 3 on my system
  9. Hi All, I am looking for a good python cheat sheet for quick reference when writing my little projects, as I am still trying to improve my skills. I don't need examples of things like strings for variables, just what they are and if possible a quick description. Many Thanks
  10. Right got it all setup now, just running witches 3, granted its only at the very beginning but CPU max draw according to HWMonitor is around 50w give or take. Unfortunately is doesn't seem to tell me the current GPU wattage just % but at 75w max I didn't expect it to be drastic from the GPU. Thanks for the help all!
  11. The PSU is a genuine dell 80 plus gold supply, also other devices connected outside of low power USB stuff is a 850 evo 500gb, 8gb ram and a DVD drive
  12. Personally I would go for the HP, I used to hate HPs, I used to get a lot with dead motherboards from buggered fans etc but now they seem to have upped their game. Dell is decent but again I prefer HP.
  13. Hello All, So I have had to replace my dead desktop with a cheap one from eBay, i picked up a 390 SFF, mostly because I thought level 1 techs idea was a good idea for a cheap, portable desktop. Anyways the CPU still works (i5 2500) and i purchased a 1050ti SFF GPU and was wondering under a gaming load would the 240W gold cert PSU be okay?, I would imagine the wattage would be a touch over 180w with my current components (Allowing 10-15w for SSD/RAM/Motherboard) Suggestions? Thanks
  14. Mostly NES/SNES games, I would emulate PS1 but on a phone, I doubt it.
  15. Hello all. I am looking at playing some retro games on my Android phone and was wondering what the best emulator is? I was thinking retro arch for Android but have you heard of anything better? Thanks
  16. Yeah both my laptop and desktop can run BF1 at almost full ultra so it shouldnt be a issue. Thanks!
  17. Hello All, So I have never played any watch dogs games outside of a little test at a local computer store. Anyways Watch Dogs 2 is currently on sale for around £27 and I was wondering if its worth it? Thanks
  18. Dropbox or Google drive with a backup scheme in place. Backing up files is rather easy using both Windows and Macs automated tasks features, plus OSX will notify you if you have an iPhone when its doing it. Another way is to have both devices access each other via network sharing, and then you just map the network locations on each device, this could be considered a "Free" option but does have the downside of not been able to access files when outside of your local network if you dont have a VPN in place.
  19. Slim Eclipse Che VM? I like that idea Take it using Hyper-V?
  20. Hello All, So to bring in 2017 I am building a little server for basic file storage and eclipse che (this is the current plan, it could expand) and while I have access to multiple OS from Windows 10 to Server to Linux I am a bit un-decided on which I should use. The programming side is all very basic stuff like Java and C. I have been playing around with RDP a bit recently and to be honest I have to say its performance is good considering (Tested at max settings) which is making me lean towards Windows more than linux but of course I can just use SSH and basically build a VPS with Linux and it would likely be even better over VPNs. How would you setup such a thing personally? Thanks!
  21. There is a high chance your laptop is not yet supported for Android apps. https://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/chrome-os-systems-supporting-android-apps <- looking at this the laptop seems to be in the line for android apps but its likely not going to be ready until a little later this year. There is a method to get the Android store to work using some software called Arc but its hit or miss currently and may not work at all. https://9to5google.com/2016/10/06/how-to-get-android-apps-running-on-almost-any-chromebook-right-now-video/ Please note for the above method to work you need to enable developer mode in ChromeOS to even access the shell needed, this WILL wipe your device and remove any security features enabled, follow at your own risk.
  22. As mentioned above do not try to break it, the manufacture will find out and refuse a return on the item. Just simply explain to the company you purchased it from that its doing what ever, if its not all the time explain to them that there is a chance the fault may not appear as it only happens randomly. Generally lying to the company will only back fire on you, honesty is the best when dealing with returns.
  23. Yes, its called a Power On Self Test. This is a test the PC performs on every boot, it checks to make sure everything installed is working, if it detects a fault the motherboard will beep to alert you, you then reference the beeps against your motherboard on google to get your answer, this can vary between BIOS chips as different manufactures design them. Another useful one which is not always obvious is the CPU fan(s) if these are spinning at 100% for over a certain amount of time there is something wrong, this is because the PC cannot post and is simply a more subtle way of it telling you, if the PC posts correctly the fan controller will pick up and control the voltage required currently, this all links into more technical topics, but is still useful. regarding the CPU not been detected in the BIOS, this wouldn't even happen as you have no way to draw a screen without a CPU even with a dGPU as there is nothing to control the instructions around the PC, if you some how manage to install this wrong (Always check the CPU for a gold arrow and match this to the motherboard socket, generally there are 2 stand offs which only allow the CPU to go in one way.), expect major damage to the socket or the CPU as it will likely has crushed some pins required. Physically checking the parts for damage is the only real way to test outside of box building and even then this may not show anything immediate, always keep that receipt close.
  24. There is a few bits. First build the PC to a state outside of the case to make sure everything is working (Motherboards box will do, DO NOT use the antistatic bag at all), there is nothing more annoying than building a PC and then finding out the motherboard doesn't work. Secondly take your time, this is your first build by the sounds of it, even more seasoned builders make mistakes that are borderline stupid, this happens multiple times. There is also a chance your first boot wont work, again down to something stupidly simple, don't sweat it, just take a little break and come back to it 10 mins later and retrace your steps. If unsure ASK. Regardless of cash spent on this project it is still your hard earned cash. Asking the forum for advice before proceeding will allow you to avoid any major mistakes (Bent CPU pins, dead GPUs) and in the long run, potentially save you more cash. Thats it really.
  25. Mine is a Toshiba CB2 (Intel Celeron, 4GB RAM, 16GB eMMC) which I have used Linux on before, I believe currently it has a modified BIOS.
