  1. Budget (including currency): 1000-1200 CHF Country: Switzerland (swiss "amazon":https://www.digitec.ch/en) Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: - Games: any esports games to any "bigger" game I feel like buying when they are on sale e.g Witcher, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Titanfall 2, Tomb raider games etc. - Workload: for school some ML work recently, CAD and some web dev work but that could also soon become a bit more demanding depending on work, school etc. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I am currently running an i5 6600k with an rx480 and have been experiencing more lag and crashes lately, I have tried reinstalling drivers and other usual troubleshooting. For stuff like ML the i5 seemed to struggle every now and then and amd is not supported or I just couldnt get it to work. -Monitors: Currently have 2 and am planning on getting a 1440p 144Hz one so that is the target resolution/fps -GPU: I want to pick up a used 3070 or 3080 +-300-450 CHF -Case: I want smaller than a normal tower, I really like like the look of the ASUS AP201, if anyone has an opinion on it I would love to hear it -+90CHF -PSU: I have a 750w one already and would keep that, should be fine -Storage: Have that -RAM: I want to pick up some used 32GB DDR5 kit +-60-80 So my main issue is the CPU and Motherboard, hardware prices and availability here is interesting. The main cpus I have been looking at are the 7600x and the i5 13600k, with b650 Tuf and b760 asrock respectively. I know the intel chip is better overall, but it is more expensive and I am not sure about the b-series pairing. I could also go DDR4 with intel. So I would love any kind of input and thanks for the help.
  2. Well then it looks like either unraid or Proxmox so far. But ive also seen docker containers mentioned and something else, any opinion on that route? The nas part should be the easiest. The vpn part should be doable, have been doing some research on it. Now the music part is where things get dicey tbh. I know building a server for yourself isnt very difficult as far as I have seen. But I havent come across anything that would give multiple users the ability to stream different files to different desired outputs at the same time.(basically your own minispotify)
  3. I have cloud backups atm. So yeah I think ssd is the way to go for the speed and noise I have amassed this amount of stuff over years so, its not growing very fast.
  4. I dont need all that much space tbh. All I have is a few hundred albums +-200GB atm, and photos less than 1Tb atm. 2tb should be good and then I can always upgrade later. I am even considering only going with ssds since I dont have all that much stuff. But it is more expensive. Havent really thought about backups and such yet tbh.
  5. I only have the mobo CPU and Ram so drives iwill need to get anyways. The music software is whats causing me the most headaches atm. Because I want to have multiple users streaming different music to differnt outputs at the same time. And most solutions are for 1 person as far as I can see.
  6. Im willing to learn and tinker. I have seen Proxmox mentioned a lot, but ill add Unraid to my list. Yes im looking in to the hd series currently.
  7. Because I need more cores and ram or why exactly?
  8. Hi, I want to build a home server that would function as: a VPN gateway for some devices on the network a NAS a music server that I would like to set up to be able to stream to different RPi's that would be hooked up around the house to different audio setups. All this with multiple users wanting to stream to different devices at the same time. Finding information on the different individual parts, is simpleish. But putting the mall together makes it a tad more difficult. I need help in every aspect more or less. Hardware: I currently have an old i7980x with 12gb of ram that I was planning to use for this, but I am having troubles getting it to boot. It needs a legacy BIOS GPU which I dont have currently. OS and software: I have no idea what OS I should go with. On the software side I need OpenVPN and Plex, but im not sure. I also dont know how great plex is for music. Setup: Yeah no clue, again looking for solutions for the parts is doable, though alltogether I am a bit overwhelmed. So my questions are: Is the hardware I have on hand usable, if not where should I be looking? What kind of OS should I go with? I really need some recommendations for the software for the music server with multiple users side of things. And any places I can look for help with the server setup? Thanks for taking the time, and for any input.
  9. The fans are running, cant say if fully or not. But there is air moving.
  10. Thanks for the suggestions, although finding parts around here is a challenge. Wouldnt the 970 and 1070 have the same problem as my rx480 though? What would be the difference an X5675 and the 980x already on there? I already reseated CPU and RAM a few times and redid the thermal paste, but hey you never know Ill try again. I tried booting once without RAM sticks and a troubleshoot speaker went off, with ram in there in doesnt go off. Does this mean the RAM sticks i have in there should be compatible?
  11. Yep thought of that and tried it. No luck.
  12. Yeah so I have to get a compatible card first and then I can worry about updating the BIOS, or maybe i can update the BIOS without one. All I can do is try. Ill check if I can find any of the cards you mentioned, but the used market is kinda dead here. Any idea what GPU generation I could look for on the Nvidia side?
  13. Hi, so i have this "old" motherboard that i have been trying to revive. It is a MS 7543 ver 1.0, some old dell motherboard as far as I can tell. It has an i7-980x in it and some RAM. The motherboard has no video outputs so i have been using my RX480 in it. When booting fans speed up and lights go on but I never get an output. After a bit of research my best guess is that I need a GPU that supprts Legacy BIOS, but im not sure. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or ideas as to which GPU's I could try to get my hands on? What else could it be? And how could I use this CPU, would it be good to use as a little home server? I have been wanting to try and build a home server for a while now. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.
