  1. should I just install both NAS and Jellyfin in VMs or docker or whatever and give them folders on the HDD and that should be fine? I've just been nervous about the way to set it up so I can extend this in the future. Don't wanna load up some data I wanna keep safe and then lose it trying to grow my partition for NAS
  2. I noticed that there's plugins for Jellyfin/Plex in Nas software like TrueNas, would you recommend doing that?
  3. Yeah everything I have so far, the OS and my VM are all stored on the SSD, I haven't touched the HD yet and want to organize it in a way where I could grow it without too much trouble - like if I want to expand my NAS storage later down the line
  4. Hello All! I recently built and setup a server to run my home automation (HomeAssistant) platform in a VM, it works really well and I'm able to use the server for other stuff like setting up databases and hosting local instances of websites and apps. I really want to install a media server like Jellyfin on it, but I also also want to have a NAS as well. Since I got 1 16TB hard drive, I'm realizing there's going to be read/write bottlenecks because it'll be one disk. Do you recommend partitioning the disk or should I get more hard disks and have 1 work for Jellyfin and the rest for the NAS in a raid configuration with parity drives? Thanks!
  5. Apologies if this is not the correct place for this post - I didn't see a Floatplane subforum. I'm proposing Floatplane enact a feature like Youtubes old Community Captions where members of the community could step up and transcribe the videos and translate to different languages. Obviously, this would be entirely voluntary. Since Floatplane is comprised of more dedicated and invested fans, it is feasible that there would be individuals who would be willing to contribute to captioning videos. I would expect that there be a way for collaboration between multiple users - especially for longer form content like WAN show - where people contribute for specific time stamps and it gets spliced together into one file. Also some safeguards against trolling would be nice - edit logs and whatnot. Also, if done in a way where the vtt file can be exported and added to YouTube, this would improve captions on YouTube videos across the board. The reason I'm proposing this is because as a Deaf individual who wants to further support the team, I really can't access Floatplane until auto captioning is added and Linus has said that for the foreseeable future, they will not invest in a captioning company to hand caption their videos. Which is fair enough - I think the auto captions on youtube is okay, but Community captions was amazing and Youtube is dumb for removing it. I'd love to see it make a comeback on something like Floatplane. BTW as for trolling - people purposefully putting memes and jokes in the subtitles rather than captioning what was said - in the old days of youtube, there were lots jokes and stuff in addition to the captioning that overall improved the experience of videos for those watching (they were marked in []'s) and if they are disruptive or not relevant, others in the community would likely keep them in check. Thoughts?
  6. I cannot access GRUB I don't think. I can't run commands or anything, its just a blank flickering screen. I definitely can see the files from Windows - they're still there thank god! Ill definitely do the live usb option.
  7. I moved this to Troubleshooting because that's a more appropriate location i think
  8. Hello everyone, Recently my Desktop computer has started booting into a flashing command line interface with no text or graphics. It seems something is wrong with the bootloader, and most suggestions online say to press ctrl-alt-f1 (f2/f3/f4/f5/f6 etc) but none of these combinations do anything on my system. Since I am dual booting Windows and Linux, I've verified that Windows boots up fine and it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue - Ram shows up just fine in bios. I'm not really sure where to go from here. I've tried holding spacebar, escape, shift (left and right) on bootup and I still get to the same interface. It would be a real pain in the butt to reinstall ubuntu all over again since I haven't gotten around to backing up my data. Any ideas?

  10. I see thank you very much everyone! I'll give myself 100 GB of space in that case. Can i reallocate this later on or is this only set one time?
  11. I want to dual boot my gaming PC with Ubuntu. I have 2 terabytes of storage with most of it free and I'm not quite sure how much would be enough for dual booting. I don't imagine I'll need more than 10 gigabytes of space for Linux but I want to double check if that is a reasonable expectation. I'm planning to use linux for programming/coding and windows for most other things like watching videos, playing games etc due to lack of compatibility with applications and most games I play. Thank you
  12. Here is a snapshot of the errors I am getting: I am also attaching the downstream and upstream bonded channels just in case that's useful Other information: My ISP is Xfinity, I am paying for Gigabit internet, and this router is a DOCSIS 3.1 Router from Arris called the Surfboard SB8200 The router I am using is most likely not the problem since it was working before we upgraded our modem but its the Netgear R7000 Thank you!
  13. Hi this is very interesting to me, where may I learn more information about DOCSIS ? What is NAT exactly? Is this something I can configure on my router?
  14. Hello, I recently upgraded my home's internet cap from 70 MB/S to Gigabit, but I am not getting the full speeds I am paying for; My download speed as of now is around 200 - 300 mbps but I am paying for gigabit (1000 mbps). I have an Arris SBG6700-AC modem and a Netgear R700 router both of which suggest that they are capable of operating at gigabit internet speeds For reference: https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/r7000.aspx; https://www.arris.com/surfboard/products/wi-fi-cable-modems/sbg6700-ac/ I was reading the documentation and I was wondering if having two channels (excuse my lack of proper terminology) of WiFi - 2.5ghz & 5ghz - is why I am not reaching desired speeds? Would I need to turn off the 2.4 ghz connection to get gigabit internet on the 5ghz one? Please let me know what other information I can offer.
