I guess this is still technically a build, though it isn't a PC build in specific. I live in a house built in 1927, skeleton key door handles, short basement and the whole nine yards. Anyhow, I'm working on dedicating a bedroom that is unused for a gaming room, both for my PC and consoles (Like Coleco Vision, NES and other old ones) The room itself is 11 feet long and 7 feet wide, so it's not huge, and had 1/8" plywood on the walls (Somewhat seen in the video) and a plaster ceiling, with painted 2x6 for the floor. I'm currently working on drywalling the whole thing, putting down a sub floor and carpet. However, I'm still not 100% sure on what to do in regards to the organization/layout (Possibly thinking of shelf mounting my PC about 5 feet in the air etc)..Anyhow, here's the progress I have so far, I appreciate criticism/suggestions

Problem resolved, my user account had a glitch in it, I created a new one and everything works now

I don't even have any sort of anti malware or anything like that installed. And Windows Defender doesn't seem to be running

I've just installed Java (JRE) and was trying to run a program, though it seems to stop working after about 5 seconds. This is a fairly fresh install of windows, and it is the insider build of windows 10. -It only does it on 64 bit -It doesn't crash right away if I reboot the system first -All programs that use javaw.exe have this problem (including the java config program) Unfortunately, the program I want to run requires 64 bit version of Java. I ran the program through Visual Studio's debugger, and the problem seems to be caused by awt.dll, though I can't find a fix for it. I've tried running the exe as admin, and in compatibility mode, as well as reinstalling etc. A few exceptions visual studio shows are as follows: Unhandled exception at 0x0000000069304A30 (awt.dll) in javaw.exe: 0xC000041D: An unhandled exception was encountered during a user callback.

The CPU doesn't seem to be hot, it has new thermal paste on an intel stock cooler. There is no speaker so there are no error/beep codes, it seems to post properly, just shuts itself off. I had swapped the psu back and same problem
-
I dug through my pile of crap and found a cpu (actually the same cpu)..I put it in, and it fired right up, however it's only running for about 30 seconds then it shuts itself off, cleared cmos etc again no difference, but I can get as far as the windows boot screen
-
True, the only time i've ever seen a motherboard fail was because people don't understand what surge protectors are. But at the same time, it's got 2gb of ddr2 ram, some asus motherboard, the system was manufactured in 2006, however it does have sata ports/hdd, so it's pretty out dated
-
But again, what do I need a quad core, WD reds etc for? I just have a few movies on an external hard drive, the system I have does the job no problem, but it it worth the risk to spend $30 on a cpu, with a chance of the motherboard failing in a few months?
-
Thanks for the input, but I don't care about the case, it's in a cabinet in my basement. I'm looking to spend as little money as possible on this, so a $130 case is for sure out of the picture. The old power supply is still good, its 450w, I also have a new(ish) thermaltake supply. Also have a new hard drive I put in this media box about 3 weeks ago and 4gb of ddr3 ram laying around somewhere, so it's really down to new pentium4/core duo or new cpu/motherboard

I'm using an old computer with windows server as basically a plex server (With a few other small things too) Last week I couldn't log in via remote desktop, nor would any display show on a monitor. I tried changing the power supply, pulling all hard drives/ram/anything in the io, clearing the cmos etc. Anyhow, I pulled it apart today, and with the cpu cooler off, powered it up. After about 15 seconds, the cpu was so hot it burned my finger upon touching it, and about 10 seconds later the system shut off (i'm assuming due to the heat), though there is no burning smell off of it So basically, the cpu is fried. It's an old lga775 socket, and the same cpu is $8 with $15 shipping from intel on amazon. Now, the other thing is, the shipping is about 2-3 weeks. Is it worth the $23 dollars to replace the cpu? Or should I get a new system/build a new server? If so, what can I get away with? I'm just worried that i'll replace this and something like the motherboard decides to quit. What do you guys think?
-
After a skype conversation with a friend, to his suggestion I cleared the CMOS and that seemed to do it, windows is installing right now.
-
Even with the hotfix.
-
I did, I put a BRAND NEW drive in it. A family member bought it for their computer, but didn't use it. If I put the drive in my computer, it will boot fine, however it will not in this. It will boot into startup repair EDIT: Apparently, Windows Server has a hotfix for systems with EFI boot, i'll try that

I pulled the RAID, the board is an asus p5vd2-vm
