  1. Yeah and our library closes at 12 because they don’t want people too stay late anymore so all the engineering students that do stay late are in the engineering building cuz it’s card access and we come and go as we please which is really helpful. But the engineering building doesn't have computers for just any student to use. They have them for master students but they’re supplied only to them.
  2. Yeah when I saw the laptops next to each other and in comparison to the reviewers hand I personally don’t think they’re too big. Plus it can’t hurt to get it and replace it with the 15” if I don’t end up liking it.
  3. Yeah I want to be able to work on the projects late at night or anywhere I want because the computer are always held up by people doing there own things or just playing games on it. So to avoid running into issues where I don’t have a computer that can’t possibly handle my workload I rather just get a laptop with good specs that can do it all.
  4. I was thinking about the 17” laptop as well cuz of the better cooling as I heard previously there were throttling issues either older XPS models. But I was told the 17” screen size would be too big so I didn’t want to be carry something too big around all the time. But I still wanted the 17” so I’m waiting until a store near me gets a display model so I can see it in person before deciding on the size. As for the specs I’d definitely get more ram but I believe 512 nvme would be good because I do have an external 1TB hardrive. Thanks this really helped point me in the right direction.
  5. I have previously thought about exactly that and someone in this forum told me that it would better if I get an ultra book with better specs than a desktop with it. I agree with that because I spend most time on campus and go home super late so having a desktop wouldn’t make sense for me. But thank you for your reply.
  6. Hello, I was looking to get a new laptop for university. I am a civil engineering student and would like to know which configuration would be best from the new XPS line up. I am considering configurations from the 15” and 17” variants. I would like a laptop configuration that I can keep for 5-6 years to help me through university and that I can keep for a year or two after that. I expect to do CAD and run simulations so I need a laptop that is able to handle such tasks with ease. I believe the maxed out version is overkill and quiet frankly relatively too expensive. So would anybody be able to recommend a configuration that’s hopefully under $3k (CAD) but if it is slightly over that’s fine? Or maybe recommend other laptops that are good. (Please no MacBooks or Gaming laptops ) Thanks in advance for the help.
  7. There is a whole course dedicated to it and so i would think that I would use it quite a bit anywhere from small to mid range projects. The reason I want a powerful system is because I want to be able to open multiple instances of the program and not experience lag because I have to put up with it right now in school. The projects right now are very basic and I'm using the school's Lenovo PC and that can't handle more than one instance being opened at once. Plus some of the programs require at least a 2gb dedicated graphics card.
  8. I'll be going to university soon for civil engineering and was wondering instead of having to buy a bulky laptop or an expensive thin laptop to allow me to be able to run programs like AutoCAD, SolidEdge, Envisoneer etc. if I would be able to build my own system and than get a cheap laptop and be able to remotely connect to it from anywhere as long as I have an internet connection. So I was wondering what the best built would be, what the laptop to get, and also how or what would allow me to remote desktop connect from anywhere. Plus it would be amazing if Linus could make a video about this or something similar to it. Ps. I absolutely despise Apple so MacBooks are out of the question. Thanks for the help in advanced.
