I am waiting for updates to occur, however Baldurs Gate 3 is installed on my Intel 660p (SSD) however its showing 100% usage during update on my mechanical backup drive. Why? Looking for any input to help resolve this.

red or blue Upgrading from 6600k to either 8086k or 2700X

I agree with you in the sense that a 7700k isn't necessarily outdated however the pricing doesn't reflect it's age and platform. It is the most economical option to simply drop in a new chip in my Z170 MB and run a BIOS update. However I am fortunate to have the money to spend for a new platform and while I do understand LGA 1151 has been out for a while, I never feel the need to be at the fore-front of tech. However I will also not deny that my 6600k seems to FEEL outdated with the recent push for cores by the Ryzen platform, and Intel's subsequent response. Economically and if I did not intend to pass my build down, I'd likely choose to upgrade to the 7700k and ride it out for another year or two. But that is not the case this time for me, as I have the money to spare and a friend in 'need'. -

I understand, but as I said I'm passing my current build down to a friend in need. She's running a 6 year old laptop with broken hindges, a 2nd gen. i5, and no discrete graphics. I figured I'd do something nice and simply upgrade myself and let her use my old setup with a case change. -

Thank you for your input. I will see if my Uni. will allow me to use their computers for sims, but I'm not hopeful. -

You might be right but if presented with an option to get the 8086k for $50 more would it be worth it to you? I don't mean to sound hostile I'm simply asking for your own opinion. -

I would consider simply a 7th gen CPU however the cost of just the CPU is comparable to a newer platform of CPU and I guess I failed to mention I'd like to do a sudo-new build. (Passing down all my parts except PSU and Case) -

So given a few compromises to meet the AMD build price for the Intel side, taking a simulation run time hit, and simply being able to push frames in your opinion is better than the AMD? I know it's mainly about use case I'm just hesitant to go away from the 2700x for two less cores. Would there be many cooling differences or do you think that a mid-tier air cooler be sufficient for either? -
First I'd like to mention that this is both an upgrade to myself and I'm passing down parts of my old build to my S.O. When you view the parts lists, I will NOT be using the Q300L Case, PSU, nor storage. That said, the rest of the parts are either being considered/open to change. I am aiming around the $1000-1100 mark and would like the 2700x as a "baseline" since that is what I started to look at initially and have specifically chosen the parts in the list already. My use case that I'll be using the PC for is mainly gaming, however I do run Flowsimulations using either Ansys or StarCCM, and occasionally want to stream my games to Twitch. With a difference in core count being in question, what team should I choose, AMD 2700x or Intel 8086k. I game at 1080p with a GTX 1070 MSI Gaming X and my monitor is 144Hz however set to 120Hz since I can usually pull that off. Here is the possible Intel build, and here is a possible AMD build. Is the 8086k worth it should I cut some costs and choose a 8700k? Any feedback and opinions is greatly appreciated. Builds have been updated and I've come to the conclusion to wait for blackfriday and see where AMD stands with the 7nm CPUs.

Apologies for not including the H5 type, it would by the H5 Universal. I have also edited the vote choices.

The movement to an i7 on the 6th or 7th gen seems like a small improvement in therms of upgrade. While the i7 does brin more cores into the system, I am "upgrading" since I am passing this build down to my girlfriend. I can't take watching her play Minecraft at 7fps at the lowest setting. The grass is freaking a solid green color at when you look 10 blocks away.

Thank you for the input. I haven't found much comparison between them all or even two so I appreciate the effort. I've been trying to simply watch Youtube and read articles on them individually and gauge people's responses and results. I theoretically could wait longer for the 7 nm past Black Friday however until more news comes out, meaning if no more leaks or additional information gets released, I will likely be purchasing the 2700x. I simply don't want what happened to me with the 6600k again, where I purchase it and literally 1.5 years later the 8th gen Intel and Ryzen start battling leaving older CPU's like that behind.

For quick context, this is my current build that I plan on building anew since my i5 really cannot keep up with my ANSYS simulations, gaming, and streaming. I have it currently overclocked stable at 4.4 GHz and looking to increase my cores and clocks. I have a slight preference to the AMD side since I think they would provide the greatest gain to my needs however open to suggestions. A quick note before clicking my planned AMD build, I do plan on passing down my current to my girlfriend and downsizing the case, so the new case won't be used nor the PSU. I have created a really quick intel build for a possible Intel build instead however again, looking for input on the poll so I can finally decide on a cooler, and any additional input. Thanks for all your help!
