  1. I understand that optane is unrelated to CPU performance. I should have made it clearer, my bad. A better way of phrasing my question would be. Since Optane is made to work with Intel, how much value does an Intel CPU get when you combine it with Optane overall? Should I factor in the ability to use Optane when deciding my CPU? Mid-range budget wise (exact numbers is up in the air). as for a break down of my usage, 40 gaming, 40 streaming, 20 productivity
  2. So, I'm building a new computer. I've been using Intel for ages, but am starting to look at AMD. What is better? AMD Ryzen 7 2700x OR an Intel i7 8700k With Optane (32gb)? Main use would be Gaming, Streaming, and Video/Photo editing. The Ryzen is cheaper for me to get, but I'm having a hard time working out if the i7 with Optane would be better or not.
  3. What kind of PSU would be good to get? is a 700w one good enough?
  4. I'm not 100% into CPUs other than Intel's "Normal" cpus (i7, i9 etc), and AMD's CPUs. Could you explain why a Xeon would be better, other then it being cheaper? I also had a look at the motherboard, I picked the ROG Strix as a replacement because of the 2 m.2, and the onboard Optical Audio port... Unless I'm silly and that isn't one lol I have a sound card that is used for my audio. But I was hoping to retire it. I'm not good with what to look for with HardDrives, or SSDs. for my Storage I was wanting the m.2 SSD as pure boot, a Drive for games, and then a big Drive for files and the like. Is there a viable solution? Would the build you suggest bet better than an Intel-based system? for both Gaming and Video editing? I welcome any suggestion. That was my goal with my storage, having an Optane to give a SSD-Like Hard drive. I rarely upgrade my system, and don't keep up to date with every new bit of tech until it's time for an Update... hence this post Things like Cooler were going to be a side thought. Keep it in the back of mind while sorting out the other things. same with a case. Buying computer parts for me is a little daunting, and I always 2nd guess myself, always asking, is this a good part? is this brand/model good? so thanks for the input, please keep them coming.
  5. So my current computer is ok, but need to update it for my current needs. Here is my current build: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel - Core i7-4790 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Processor ($612.89 @ Amazon Australia) Memory: Crucial - 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($145.54 @ Amazon Australia) Memory: Crucial - 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($145.54 @ Amazon Australia) Storage: Crucial - M500 120 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Video Card: Asus - GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB Dual Series Video Card ($629.00 @ Scorptec) Total: $1532.97 PC Part Picker didn't have my PSU or Motherboard. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-H87M-D3H, and my PSU is a ThermalTake LT-700AL2NL (700W). Also have a HDD, but can't remember what it is. The main usage is Streaming, Video editing, Photoshop, and Gaming (Overwatch, DeadByDaylight, For example) I was looking at upgrading to: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel - Core i7-8700 3.2 GHz 6-Core Processor ($490.00 @ Mighty Ape) Motherboard: Asus - ROG STRIX B360-F GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($199.00 @ Mwave Australia) Storage: Samsung - 970 Evo 250 GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive ($99.00 @ BudgetPC) Storage: Samsung - 860 Evo 1 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($238.95 @ Shopping Express) Storage: Seagate - IronWolf 3 TB 3.5" 5900RPM Internal Hard Drive ($119.00 @ Umart) Could I harvest the RAM from my old computer? If I wanted to get more RAM later on, does it have to be the same? Either way, suggestions on what to look for when it comes to ram would be great. If possible, I would like to harvest as much from my current computer to save some money. I was thinking of maybe getting an Optane, but don't know if it would be overkill or a waste of money. I also have Capture card that I want to use, but I assume the Motherboard I've picked would support it.
  6. I'm not that fussed on upgrading. Most of the things I would use it for haven't had their specs increased that much over the years. My budget is about $1500-$2000, of course, cheaper is better. But that's also AU money, So the $550 Surface Go is $744, But Microsoft is charging $839AU. So Yay for the Aussie Tax. I don't know if my budget would help. For the price, any Surface product doesn't seem worth it. Like for that $550 (or $744AU for me), I could get something more powerful. (for $799 a 2in1 with a AMD A9-9420e Processor 3GHz) I have a desktop for my main work, I want a 2in1 for my light production and media. and iPad wouldn't work for me either, the MAIN reason for this is to have fantasy grounds going while at the table (Fantasy grounds is a Virtual Tabletop RPG program use for online games, But it works well for in person as well) but I also want to use it for other uses, Like I said in my first post. Also I really dislike Apple, so I kinda want to stay away from anything iOS related.
  7. Why a laptop style over a Tablet style? I've been looking at a tablet style so I don't have to worry about the extra weight while reading a comic in bed.
  8. I've been looking for a 2-in-1 detachable laptop, like the Surface Pro, but without the price tag. I just don't know what are good ones to look into. I would be using it mostly for typing, and web browsing, but would be using it for a little Photoshop work here and there, and even less Video editing. and using Fantasy grounds every now and then as well, but the spec's for that are lower than Photoshop. I won't be using it for Games. Features I'm wanting is Stylus and Keyboard cover come with the device (Stylus sold separately might be ok, depending on how much it is). I've looked into HP Spectre x2 (12-c004tu), but not sure if the i5 would be good enough. (Side question on this, does refurbished matter with 2in1s?) Also been looking at the Samsung Galaxy Book, but have read that the keyboard isn't the sturdiest when not on a flat surface, and the kickstand seems to be a part of the Case, while not a deal breaker, it feels it would annoy me not having a stand without the keyboard. If anyone could point me in the right direction or have used the two I mentioned and have input or suggestions, that would be great EDIT: Added the bullet points so people can just skim the relevant information 2in1 detachable Specs like the Surface Pro, but cheaper Stylus and Keyboard Cover preferred included Used for Typing Little Photoshop (Digital Drawing) minor Video Editing Using Fantasy Grounds (Think Roll20 but not) NOT FOR GAMING.
