  1. Hello, I was planning to build a home web-server off it's own fiber line. I'm running a ClearOS box to help battle internet traffic using it as a gateway firewall. I have 16 IP's I can use. The majority of the server will be used by FFMpeg, since two of my main sites are multi-media related right now I'm having to use my current web-server and a storage server to host the bulk of the media files. FFMpeg creates them from 260p up to 2160p and mobile so 1 video gets converted multiple times and outputs various resolutions. Hardware I plan to use is this: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 16GB DDR4-3200 Memory ASRock Tachi X470 500gb SSD (boot/os) CentOS 7 NZXT H440 I will be filling the 11 3.5 bays with: Either A) HGST 10+ TB or B) WD Red 10+ TB, Lastly C, Seagate IronWolf 14TB ** I will be adding as needed. I could go smaller drives 4-6TB. Depends on how much drives finally get down to. I could not find a RAID Card to work with an ASRock Board. A friend donated his LSI MegaRAID 9260-8i but it's PCI-E 2.0 x8 and I have no slot on the board for either the ASRock Gaming X370. Only port comes close to fitting it is my 2nd PCI-E slot for a video card on this machine, I wanted to test it out first. But the Tachi has 10 SATA Ports, so I'm sure that's plenty. Any suggestions? I already know it's stupid to use desktop parts for web hosting, but I'm on disability so I cannot afford much. That RAID card would I plug that into my 2nd Video Card Slot even those it's 3.0, I don't want to kill my system.
  2. Hello, I've recently built a new NAS and Home Theater PC. I'm using the AMD 1800X with 16gb DDR4-3200 ASrock Tachi board x370, for what I am trying to do is setup a computer I built with another AMD Ryzen 2nd gen 2700x I use as a server, it has CentOS 7.5, i've got the latest video codecs and ffmpeg compiled, what I would like to do is re-compress movies or tv shows down to a certain size in 1080p and 4k, some of these files can be up to 5+gb or 7gb for 1080p (lots of subs) and 4K ranges anywhere from 8gb (time limit) to i've seen 71gb files. Now I have 16x10TB HGST in my server, which will re-compress the videos down to a size that doesn't have an over inflated video file, and when it's done it will move them to a finished folder, then I can copy them to my HTPC. However, I need a RAID card that can work with drive sizes from 4TB up to 10TB. I'd like a budget card 9260-8i I heard was nice, the server does have 16 drives but i will be running multiple arrays. If anyone can point me to a card that will support those drive sizes, I would appreciate it. Thank You.
  3. I Looked at both, and those look better. I have the EVGA 500w PSU already which is why I didn't put a price next to it, but I can use it in a home theater PC. It's okay to make recommendations I guess, I had my choices because of my budget. I also read somewhere the 1700x is more configurable in the BIOS of that board and can be overclocked, but 10$ saved it 10$ I can use on something else.
  4. Hello, I am building a web server for deployment at my own house, I have a line run specifically for this purpose which was cheaper than a datacenter's rental fee and shared speed. I've decided to go with the following list of part's: (Prices are Newegg, I can only use my line of credit.) ASRock Tachi x370 (170$) AMD 1800x (239$) -- The 1700x was 10$ more! NXZT H440 Midtower Case (110$) DDR4-3000 16GB Memory from a QVL (i'll overclock the RAM) EVGA 500w Power Supply (Modular) **IF Required RX 570 Video Card 1TB Crucial SSD for OS (Will Run CentOS 7) Now when it comes to hard drives, I have a choice, 4x4TB Toshiba Enterprise Hard Drives, or wait for a deal on 6TB HGSTs and up. I won't use Seagate I've just had to much bad luck with them even their new Ironwolf Pro's I've had to send 3 back after a week of use because drives started disappearing and re-appearing in the BIOS on reboot's I ran Seatools and they failed SMART and had bad sectors so I'm not going to even deal with them. I'll stick with what I know works and what I like and can afford Now I got 3 HGSTs 6TB's on sale about six weeks ago and I plan to add 4 more if they do go on sale, however, I have six of these 4TB Toshiba Enterprises which are 94$ a lot better than the 6TB's price wise and warranty wise. What RAID card would you recommend for drives 6TB+ because for all I know I might put nothing but 12TB's in it and expand it out as time goes buy. I don't plan to put all the drives in at once. When it comes to RAID level's I want to do a RAID 5. 5E, I'll be running ffmpeg a lot due to video compression/conversion for mobile to 260p/360p/480p/640p/720p/1080p and 2160p. I do so many of these because not everyone can yet fully watch a video in as fast speeds. What would be the best card, and affordable I'm looking to spend no more than 150-200$ on it. I'm on a limited budget for this site so i'm taking drives from computers are replacing them with other older drives I had. Also I can only get this card through Newegg. I'm sorry but that's where my line of credit is. Thank you for any help you may provide. Please do not ask me why I chose the CPU/Board/RAM/Case/PSU I have my reasons.
  5. I saved up 3500$ so far, going to save another 500$ from July & August Paycheck and build it.
  6. I'm buying and saving, I got the drives already and they are Seagate, I have issues with Seagate because compared to WD/HGST/Toshiba i have more Seagate paperweights than I do of any others. I've got the 8TB Seagate SAS 12Gbps, 12 of them a family member donated them to me. and the card which is over 1 grand. I need case, which that is a nice case, I'll take that. I still want to go with Intel but I know Ryzen would be a better bet.
  7. My home network consists of my primary machine and AMD Ryzen 1800X, 16gb DDR4-3000, 500gb m.2, 2x6tb HGSTs & 4x4TB Toshiba's, all on an Asrock gaming X. Over the year's I've turned older systems into NAS's, however they are starting to add up and pile up space, and drives are starting to fail, what I would like to do is build either a 4U Rackmount, which I've yet to get the rack, or go with a Dual Build in A Lian-Li Full Tower Case with Intel processor. My I7-870 with 16gb of DDR3 RAM, has 10x2tb and 1tb drives, all out of warranty. That machine and now my fx-6300 has been giving me issues, along with an A10-6800k, So there are over 30 drives I'd like to copy/move the data from to a single desktop or desktop running as a NAS. I'm looking to expand to a new case preferably a desktop, I also want to upgrade to a 7700k with 32gb of RAM, and I want to put in a nice raid card for SAS capability and use HGSTs 8TB 12gbs SAS drive, I will never touch Seagate, I would consider western digital as a viable choice. If I go with Westen Digital I would love to get the 10TB drive. The case I'm looking at (Lian-Li) full tower has 12 3.5" slots, so that would give me roughly 120TB of space that i can move data from old drives, and failing drives to it, and down the road I would like to build a second one. I am looking for anyone who might recommend a better case, the more 3.5" the better, I don't have a rackmount so I can't build a 24 Bay rack and let it sit on the desk. I'm also wanting to know before I go spending, what would be a good RAID Card for SATA/SAS up to 12 drives or more. Any help would be great. I run a HTPC network in my house for me and my family. I could even live with a simple motherboard, ryzen processor, providing I don't have to buy a video card for it.
