  1. @SolarNova I kinda like 8.1 personally with startisback and a couple other things including aeroglass for 8.1, which with those things make it to me a much better 7. Everyone has their own opinion tho so I won’t judge. Both 7 and 8.1 were excellent in my eyes and were real operating systems. Looks like I’m going the hypervisor route then since 10 is pretty unstable right now :).
  2. Alright so before I go to the nuclear option (install ESX to get the thing on 8.1) is it possible to get a surface book 2 or any coffee lake laptop on 8.1 with most drivers (not all of them, most, mainly networking, USB, and graphics)
  3. Title. I haven’t dealt with many of the data loss issues apparently but I’m still mostly an 8.1 holdout and if 10 really is that bad, I will load a hypervisor instead of windows 10 and allocate lots of resources, just to ensure I can still run 8.1 with near full performance in a VM on a new computer I’m buying
  4. Hello LTT forums I am trying to decide which virtualization software is better, Hyper-V or VMWare? I want to use the VMs as sandbox computers to mess around with and for isolated software development.
  5. What should I install, Windows 10 LTSC or the regular Windows 10 (referred to as Windows 10 SAC from now on)? i plan to use this for productivity mostly such as software development and virtualization. I see the benefits of both and am having a hard time choosing between the new features and speedy updates of SAC and the stability and reliability of the Long Term Servicing Channel. Could anyone here help me choose? Note: licensing will be covered either way so don’t take licensing into account when suggesting.
  6. Alright I’ve decided I’ll be dual booting both and switching every day between the OSes
  7. Hi. im going to build an AMD Ryzen pc very soon and I’m divided between windows 8.1 and windows 10. This excludes UI things like the start screen so don’t worry about that stuff. I know windows 10 is newer but it’s incredibly built on telemetry, and 8.1 gives me control of updates. However the kernel and HAL on Windows 10 is better for newer CPUs. Should I just bite the bullet and accept windows 10 or try to get windows 8.1 running on AMD Ryzen?
  8. @drunkship The thing with the MacBook Pro is that you can't upgrade it too much and the keyboard is spotty. The Surface Book 2 would serve you better for most things you said, but the hard part is that coding part. Coding is best done on UNIX based platforms, so on a PC, unless you want to Hackintosh, a Linux based platform is the best choice for coding, but Adobe products don't work on Linux. I'd say stick to the Surface Book 2. Now is a Mac still an excellent choice? Absolutely. But here's the thing: if you want to use a Mac for that professional work, wait for the Mac Pro next year. Hope I was able to help.
  9. Here's the problem with the data recovery connector. The T2 always on encryption is handled by a Secure Enclave Processor in the T2 (will be henceforth referred to as SEP). That SEP has a crypto engine which contains a "UID key" (exactly like the one on iOS devices) that never leaves that T2 and is only accessible to the crypto engine. Apple does not want to backdoor SEP by having a connector like that (since it'd affect iOS devices as well) so they just make the data inaccessible without the T2 working. It sucks I know, but they're implementing more of the iOS security scheme by the days. Anti downgrade is already enabled by default but can be disabled on Macs (in contrast to iOS devices) and it's only a matter of time before anti downgrade is mandatory, all data is permanently tied to a CPU, and other things Apple will do to be more restrictive. All info was obtained from here: https://www.apple.com/business/site/docs/iOS_Security_Guide.pdf Sections that have the info: System Security: Secure boot chain, Secure Enclave, and System Software Authorization Encryption and Data Protection: Hardware security features
  10. I plan to use VMs for code development and isolated code and program testing and I do know about the performance hit, but performance should at least be relatively decent and not like the computer is screaming in agony because of the VM.
  11. Hi LTT, I'm looking into building my own PC and I want some help choosing parts for the PC. Budget: $1000-1500 USD, but I can go up if needed for performance Aim: I plan to use this PC to run games like Destiny 2, Warframe, and The Division (and its upcoming sequel) at high-very high settings. In addition to this, I want to be able to run virtual machines under VMware Workstation with good-great performance while doing other tasks as well. Motherboard would preferably be one in the relatively high end, but whatever works best for my setup would be great. Storage would be an NVMe based SSD preferably Monitors: 1 monitor, 2 at the absolute most. Peripherals: I do need to purchase a gaming keyboard and mouse, as well as a monitor. The keyboard would preferably be mechanical, and the monitor I'd prefer around 1080p-1440p OLED or IPS LCD. I'd also like a recommendation for a case as well that looks nice. Acrylic/tempered glass side panel preferred. Why am I upgrading/building: I'm going to transition away from Mac to PC and I want to build it custom so I am asking for your help Any help would be appreciated and if I need to give more specifics, please by all means say so. Thanks!
