  1. Hi all. I'm new to computer builds. I recently changed from a HDD+Optane to a M2 NVME SSD. I expected that PC to become more or less silent under light loads, as I thought most the noise was from the HDD. But, less a HDD noise, there is still a noise from the PC. I don't know how to describe the noise, it just sounds like a PC working, it doesn't sound like anything is wrong. It is not very loud but I work in a quiet room so I really notice it. I have tried googling it but everything I found is about fans and HDD's. I know it is not the fans because firstly it doesn't found like fans and 2nd I turned the fans off in BIOS and it didn't make a difference. So I figure the noise must just be from capacitors or something on the motherboard. Is this normal for PC motherboards? I never notice the same sound on laptops so am confused. I can upload a recording of the sound if it helps?
  2. I considered buying a test bench and building my own case around it but in the end realised that it was cheaper to buy a 2nd hand ITX MB ($50) and a Silverstone SG13 case ($50). I plan to modify the case a little bit to make it look more how I want it.
  3. I'm just finding this now nearly 2 years later. I'm upgrading my HDD to an SSD so will have 32GB Optane with no purpose. This seems better than putting it in a box, but I don't know how to set it up as RAM. Can someone please explain? Thanks a lot!
  4. This is what I was thinking to buy: https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-Internal-Solid-State-APS-SE20Q-2T/dp/B07T5BHCLL/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=m2+nvme+2TB&qid=1592655852&sr=8-6
  5. Hi everyone. I'm trying to figure out what SSD to upgrade to and hoping that you can help. I currently have a 2TB HDD with 32GB Intel Optane. For my purpose this works fine for daily office tasks and browsing and it starts up fast too. But now SSD's are more affordable I want to upgrade. I was planning a normal SATA SSD for about $200 from Amazon. But they also have an M2 NVME 2TB for $230. I have an Asus B250 plus board which has M2 slots so I assume that this will work fine. But I'm confused as M2 NVME seens much faster/better, and at nearly the same price, why isn't everyone buying these instead of the SATA's? Amazon is full of SATA SSDs. Before spending money I'd really like to know if its going to work! Thanks so much everyone!
  6. Hi everyone. My first post on LTT. I have a Asus B250plus with an MSI GTX1050. I have a case thats about 40 x 40 x 20cm and its >80% air/empty space. I have been looking on Amazon for a case that would be as small as possible but everything is big! The matx/mitx are smaller but I have a normal atx board. Can anyone suggest a small case for my small atx setup? I don't want to change the motherboard if possible. Thanks a lot!
  7. Thanks Seagate Surfer. I tried everything and it all came back fine. So I took it to a local repair shop who said that the HDD is gone and I need a new one. I purchased a new 2TB HDD and put on a fresh install of windows and software, everything was fine. Then, with the old HDD connected I booted off that and moved the dropbox files access to the public folder on the new HDD (as going in to the dropbox folder from the new boot was giving access issues which I couldn't resolve as it would crash). Now, with all that done, the new HDD is now running at 100% the whole time even with small read/write speeds (5MB/s). The only thing that has changed is that I moved all the files across. I don't know anything about these things, but is ti possible that the file names/string are too long or corrupted in some of the folders I moved over and that was the root cause all along? Any ideas anyone? This is really frustrating!
  8. Hi all, this is my first post. After searching around I have been unable to find solutions to the issues i'm having so as a fan of the Youtube channel thought to try here. 1) I've just replace my 2014 laptop with a self build desktop. Where we live we have 1MB internet so to avoid having to re-download 1TB of files from dropbox and reinstall everything I just put the 2TB HDD from the laptop into the desktop. I was told it wouldn't work but it did. But will I have issues? Some people saying that this causes hardware and windows issues? Any tips? 2) One of the reason to ditch the old laptop was how much it would lag and freeze, the Disk was always 100% in task manager. Unfortunately now in the new setup the same thing is happening, it is always at 100%, although the system now functions better. I guess there is an issue with software? Even when there is nothing happening it is 100% and read/write between 1Mb and 30Mb/s. Despite enjoying Linus' videos, I'm not a tech person, so appreciate if you can explain things simply. Thanks everyone. Christian
