  1. So I ordered parts and finally started receiving them so I put the machine together somewhat tonight to make sure the components work since half of them are used. i7 2600k (used) MSI P67A-C43 (new old stock allegedly, looks it though) Corsair XMS3 DDR3 4x4gb (used) evga gtx970 sc (used) Rosewill 750w captone (new) Issue I'm having: -No image showing up when trying to boot to bios with the 970 installed. Fans will come on at boot, then slowly come to a stop and there is never a picture. What I've tried: -I tried my girlfriends gtx 960 and it works like a charm. System boots to the UEFI bios, though the mouse works awkwardly. The X and Y axis are switch, very weird but google has shown people having mouse issues with P67 boards in the past in UEFI so I will wait until I can actually get an OS on the SSD to see if that continues to be an issue or not. I digress, once in the UEFI everything shows up. 1333 mhz 16gb of physical memory, i7 2600k @ 3.4ghz, etc etc. Pop the gtx 970 back in, and nothing. Now the 960 uses an 8 pin pci-e cable, and the 970 uses 2x 6 pin connectors. Am I just doing something wrong here? Because the gtx 970 works perfectly fine in my girlfriends system ( i5 4690, z97 asrock board, 8gb ddr3 crucial 1600mhz, windows 10 64 bit). In fact I just ran a benchmark in assetto corsa and it seems to be working just fine. -The PSU is modular, and 1 cable has 2 8 pin connectors. I tried using 1 cable with 2 6 pin connectors, and 2 cables with 1 6 pin connector each. Still nothing. Few things to note: -So like the mongoloid that I am I managed to scratch the bottom of the mobo with one of the risers. Looking at it carefully you can see a few tiny specs of copper showing, however the colored coating (paint?) seems to be the only damage. Traces don't look broken. -GTX 970 is used. It seems to have some weird corrosion, or humidity damage on the bottom. Doesn't seem to be effecting anything though since the card boots and works fine on my girlfriends system. Anyone have any ideas? The fans slowly coming to a halt makes me feel like its maybe not getting enough power?! Edit: So I just tried a sapphire HD6590 from my girlfriends old emachine and I have video with that card too. I can try my dads GTX 1060 later tonight, though I can't remember if thats a 6 pin or 8 pin card?
  2. Hmmm. According to Oculus the minimum kit is a 960. They lowered the requirements about a year ago. https://www.oculus.com/blog/updating-rifts-minimum-and-recommended-spec-os-to-windows-10/. I remember reading an article on polygon and being quite excited, especially after the price drop was announced on the rift.
  3. I haven't touched an AMD cpu probably since they were competitive back with the Athlon XP !!! Learn me about the new Ryzens. Not against it, but all I've had experience with is i5 and i7's lately since I've been using mac's since 2010. Well lets start with 0 and work from there ? I know I'm not going to be able to get by with this spending less than $500 so I'll go with that. Already setting aside $100 for a GTX 960, that seems to be the going rate for them on eBay/craigslist, unless you can suggest a better option with better value?
  4. Hi all. Looking to put something together on somewhat of a budget for now, though I plan on room for upgrades in the nearish future. Just for reference the last time I was really "into" pc gaming I was running an nvidia 8600 GT lol! Ultimately my goals will be running either Oculus, or a triple screen setup for racing sims with heavy sim hardware being pieced together over time (OSW wheel, buttkickers, android tablet for sim gauges, and eventually a motion platform). I've spent the evening every night for the last week doing my fair share of youtube research. Seems the best bang for the buck is the 2600k, though as everyone says the mobo's are stupidly expensive on eBay. For the $200-250 range that it seems I'd be in after that combo, is there anything else out there thats slightly more future proof for the same level of performance? Ideally all I care to do is run Assetto Corsa, Pcars 2, F1 201x, iRacing, etc all at highest, or near highest settings. Rig won't be used for anything else. I bought Assetto Corsa earlier this week and tried it with my budget cockpit setup on my girlfriends system and as far as I could tell I was at ultra everything running 1080p. I didn't monitor frame rates but the system ran incredibly smooth. She has a i5 4590, ASRock Z97, GTX 960 4gb, and 8 gb of ram. Greatly appreciate your time. Look forward to hearing some feedback. Thanks!
