Hey y'all, so Im at a cross roads with my old 4790k system. Current system is as follows:
i7 4790k
GTX 970 (it's the Asus strix one with a slight factory OC)
16GB DDR3 not sure on the timings but it's some Corsair baller ram with huge hear sinks that look like hand bars
240GB SSD and 2 TB HDD
I cant remember the exact model of motherboard I bought it built from a friend a few years back so I don't really remember, I know it's an overclockable m-ATX board with 4 dual channel ram slots.
I currently am running an Asus TN panel monitor 144hz 1080p, and also use it to play multiplatform games on my 1080p tv I have right next to my computer desk.
Now obviously with my current monitor/resolutions, I'm doing alright with my current system, but I'm also getting into doing podcasting and may want to do some video editing, as well as wanting to upgrade to 1440p/120-144hz monitor and upgrade to a 4k tv and I'm pretty sure I won't be satisfied with my 970 at those resolutions. Id also like to try streaming and I know my 4790 will have trouble running games and streaming too.
So my options are obviously either, sell my 970 and get an upgrade, and overclock my 4790k I have a decent aftermarket cooler, forgot exactly which one however and I do know I can OC on my mother board.
So what says my fellow Linus fans? Should I just trade up my GPU (and to what?) I don't mind spending a nice penny on a GPU but I don't want to bottleneck a 500$ GPU too badly with my 5 year old cpu... I know I can OC that 4790 to help it keep up but I don't want to push to hard and run the risk of killing the CPU. Would upgrading to 32gb Rams help as well if I keep the current system?
Now on the pro build a new rig side, my family has a summer home where if I build a new rig I could us my current rig at the summer house so I have some forum of entertainment out there.
I've built my own PC's and can do it I just don't nessicarly like the actual building part(really installing Windows and software, drivers etc.) So I really don't want to DIY but I'd be willing to if It's my best bet. I've also heard stuff is a lot easier nowadays, but haven't built a rig from scratch my self since early 2010.
Edit forgot to add my price ranges, My budget for a new GPU would probably be around 450-500$, I see 1080ti's in my are(Chicago) for around that and If I go for a new rig probably would be willing to do 1200-1300$ USD and outside of storage and PSU and probably mobo id totally be open to used parts
Sorry for the rambling post had a few drinks tonight watching Thursday night football.
