  1. I currently have an old 1U HP proliant server, I'm not planning on re using the case, since I'd like to use that server as some sort of testing/back-up device. Network speeds don't really mater te me, de 'default' 1Gbit is plenty. I shouldn't need that mucht IO, since I virtualize everything. Handy would be, that I can hook up a KVM if needed. (so 2-4 usb ports and a vga) What would you recommend as a complete build (so all the items, like motherboard, psu(s), ram sticks, CPU(s)? Hotswap is nice (I think?) but it's not a storage server, so I don't thing it's a real need to have hot swappable drives. If I ever want to build a storage server, it would need hot swappable drives, since that's the most convenient way to maintenance that.
  2. The more space the better ofcourse! I currently have 8 hot-wappable bays which I would like to keep, but that's not soooo important. If I could assign like 250GB to each VM, that would be nice. However, I still have no clue on what motherboard I could use, what type of ram etc... What PSU's? 4u is a bit big no? I was more thinking of 2U?
  3. As low as possible haha, ther shouldn't be a "limit", but like below 1.5K would be great
  4. I would like to build myself a new (quiet) VM/container (Proxmox) server. Some requirements: - As low as possible on power - Capable to run ultiple VM's and containers in Proxmox withcout any compromises - Enough storage for all the VM's (the more the better ) - As cheap as possible - Rack case - I live in Belgium so old enterprise hardware is not that much available here... I am planning on building a second node, I currently have a server running with 1 running Windows Server 2019 VM, 1 pfsense VM and 5 Containers. The Virtual Machines are relatively slow, specs will be listed below! I would want to have at least 2-3 windows VM instances running with no hassle what so ever, but also have the containers running with no issues. Type of vms: - Windows server VM - windows 7 vm (for testing) - Windows vista VM (for testing) Type of CT (containers): - Webserver + database server - gitlab server - gitlab runner server - FiveM (game) server, for testing and development - Independant Database server - Plex media server (needs storage) Specs of my current server: CPU(s) 8 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5405 @ 2.00GHz (2 Sockets) 8x 2GB DDR2 FB-DIMM 667 MT/s RAM 6x 68.3 GiB HDD's (2.5") 2x redundant PSU (700 WATT each) So my current load, when I start up all of my CT's and VM's is the following; https://i.imgur.com/C8VDXDB.png And yes, that's idle.... (8 containers and 2 VM's) Anyone here who maybe can help me out finding the right parts? I'd like to have this build in a server rack case
  5. Yes I have, I just don't know what pfsense version I can use for the boot. I tried alot of them but nothing seems to boot....
  6. Hellowa So I'm having an old watchguard x700 here (which costed me 100 euro) and I kinda want to make a pfsense box from it. Now it was flashed before with pfsense, but I had reset the system (in pfsense itself) and everything stopped working... I don't really want to just throw away the firebox (since it would be the same as throwing 100 euro away and as a student, I don't have a really big income, so high expenses are not what I really can affort... Does anyone have a suggestion? Can be a new (cheap) server or something along those lines... In the discord someone gave me the following links; https://www.jetwaycomputer.com/1U-Rackmount-Barebones.html https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-IMB310N-rev-10#ov In which the first link looks really what I'd need (could use it as a switch I think/hope) but I really have nu idea.... And what the prices would be neither... Some requirements I have are, - More then 2 ports (prefer 6 or more) - I'd LOVE 1gbit at least - POE is not required at all - Capable of supporting 5 VPN clients at the same time (will almost never hapen) - rack mountable (however I don't have a rack, yet) - not tooooooo loud, since that firebox is loud as hell (it sounds like a hairdryer) - Please, don't go over 100 euro.... That's a "big" investment for me as a student... I hope someone can help me out here, side info: I live in belgium
  7. Plex server isn't a prior, just a nice to have tho...
  8. The power usage isn't that big of a problem. And clustering the servers is a pretty good idea, except I have no clue on how to do this or if it would be possible then to have an IP-address for each server in the 10.x.x.x "range", as being able to access them over the vpn etc...
  9. Hellow LTT group So I curently have 3 servers, one watchguard (which I'm planning on flashing pfsense on it to have a seperate network for the other two servers). So A little bit specifications on the servers; HP Proliant DL360 G5: - dual Intel Xeon e5405 2.0 GHz - 16GB ECC - 6x 72GB 15k SAS drives - 2x power supply IBM System x3650 server - 12x 2GB ram - 6x 450GB hdd's - 2x intel E5335 2.0ghz - Has windows server 2012 installed on it.... Now, what I want to achieve here (I don't know if that would be possible) is that I'd like to use one server as a NAS with plex on it so I can use the server as a file share (and expand if needed with extra drive server) and another one I'd like to use (I think the IBM server) for VM's. So I think about getting proxmox on there and thus be able to create vm's for development. So I can work from that server (I would like to be able to work on that server like I'm working from my pc). Then I could, using proxmox, make staging environments and thus test locally on that server. I also would love to have CI/CD on a server, but that is a nice to have. I made a quick drawing on how I see the whole thing come together; Would this be a good choise? Or do you guys have any suggestions?
  10. Hi, I'm a student NMCT @Howest, Belgium and in love with servers and tech. I'd like to have my own servers for development projects and a NAS, to stare all of my projects, pictures, video's, backups, etc... The problem is, hardware (networking and servers) are really expensive, and my student budget doesn't allow me to "invest" into servers... Here comes my hope, that maybe someone knows a site, or a way to buy really cheap servers? They can be like damaged on the case, I don't mind.. or even don't have any drives in them, got spare drives here, so if someone could help me out, that would be really awesome! Kindest regards, Robin
