  2. Hi all, I have a new PC with 8G RAM (2x4G) - Corsair Vengeance Blue http://products.ncix.com/detail/corsair-vengeance-blue-cmz8gx3m2x1600c8b-8gb-21-66910.htm I would like to add in another 8G of RAM that I salvaged from my previous PC which is 2x4G Kingston http://products.ncix.com/detail/kingston-kvr13n9s8k2-8-8gb-2x4gb-kits-4a-88587.htm Please note the Corsair RAM has slightly different specs [CL8-9-8-24] than it seems a lot of RAM has. Will that be an issue with compatibility? Also, will my older (somewhat "budget" RAM) have a negative impact on my new RAM in anyway by slowing it down or create any other issues? Thanks guys, I am learning so much in this forum!
  3. Hi guys, I have a hard drive (Just the hard drive itself, the PC has long since been discarded) that is from a computer I purchased in 1998 (yes, you read that right). I really need to get a few small files from this hard drive - a handful of photos with a lot of sentimental value to me. The trouble is that I am sure the technology and connections have changed multiple times in the past 15ish years and I don't know how, or even IF, I can somehow hook up this old harddrive to a current PC in order to transfer the files. I am really kicking myself for not doing this long ago and procrastinating on it. Can anyone offer some insight? Is it possible? Is there some way to hook it up externally so I don't have to start messing around inside my new PC (I am scared I will foul it up and ruin my brand new computer)? I took some photos of the hard drive if that helps anyone provide suggestions. Any help is greatly appreciated as I really want to get these old files back!

    Mixed RAM - issues?

Ah, okay thanks I will just leave the extra RAM out for now as I don't really need more than 8G for gaming and the basic internet usage I do. I just thought I'd add more in so it didn't go to waste when I ditched my old PC.

    Mixed RAM - issues?

So basically, if I had a stick of fast new RAM and a stick of slower older RAM, that would cause my PC to really only use any of the RAM at the speed of the slower RAM? Like the saying goes about a chain being only as strong as its weakest link?

    Ancient harddrive (1998) recovery possible?

Hi Trevor, It doesn't seem to make any noise at all when plugged in to the contraption I bought in order to try and trsnfer the data to my new PC. I feel like it maybe made a small "click" type sound the very first time I plugged it in and then nothing. I'm a noob - based on the photos I posted at the start of this thread, where would I do those things (the setting a jumper and the rotating)?

    Ancient harddrive (1998) recovery possible?

Yes, I plugged it in as far as it could go. I found it to be a really really tight fit, I had to push it very hard to get it in, but I think it was in all the way. I have a bad feeling the drive is probably dead, so I guess I will check into some recovery options and see if it is worth whatever they charge. Thanks a lot everyone for the information and advice

    Ancient harddrive (1998) recovery possible?

Sorry, I'm not meaning to ignore your suggestion. But to be honest, I am fairly clueless with computers so the thought of getting into the case and trying to use a cable that I don't even know if I have and plug it into whatever it needs to get plugged into freaks me out. It's not that I would find it a hassle so much as I literally have almost no idea what to do (and I just bought a brand new PC and am scared of screwing it up somehow). That's really why I tried the method I did - it seemed simple and impossible to foul up.

    Ancient harddrive (1998) recovery possible?

I bought one of those today and tried it. It didn't work. I dont think that the harddrive even started spinning, and my computer couldn't recogize it as a drive. I tried another one (a newer SATA drive) and it worked.

    Ancient harddrive (1998) recovery possible?

Hey guys, I bought this item today http://www.ncix.com/search/?q=36790-1253 I bought it and brought it home to try. The guy at the shop seemed to think it wouldnt work for my old IDE harddrive but I was determined to try anyway. I read reviews and people said it worked for their old drives of a similar age. Plus I can use it for other things in the future. I just gave it a try and it will read a 10 year old SATA drive, but nothing happens when I try it on my 1998 IDE drive. I dont even hear the drive spinning. Does this just mean the drive is toast and I am out of luck?

    Ancient harddrive (1998) recovery possible?

Thanks a lot for the fast replies. I am a bit of a computer noob ( despite having owned them for quite a number of years haha) is that old hard drive I have the IDE type? If so, how do I tell that? The Vantec enclosure you mention, is that something I attach to my old hard drive and literally just plug it into a USB port of my new PC and then my PC will read the old hard drive just like it was a device attached to the PC, like a thumb drive etc.?
  20. Hi everyone, My sister is looking for a new laptop - her old one of almost 7 years (!) is finally conking out and she would like a new one. Please note we are in Canada and would like to purchase from a Canadian retailer. Things she wants to use the laptop for: Itunes Rosetta Stone (it's a language program that runs on DVDs and needs sound) - so it needs to have a DVD/CD tray General internet surfing - web pages, Youtube, Skype etc spreadsheets and word processing very low level gaming Things she does NOT need it for: video editing graphic intensive gaming high end business applications What we are looking for is a reasonably priced laptop that will be last for several years and be relatively fast and able to handle the above applications as her old laptop is dead slow and often freezes up on things like Rosetta Stone. Any advice or suggestions on brands or things to get or avoid would be greatly appreciated. We aren't very familiar with how much a decent laptop should cost so also please let us know if the budget we have is not appropriate for a laptop to handle the needs described above. The budget is in the $500 (CANADIAN) range (but could go up to $700 if needed but would really prefer to stick to $500 or even less if possible) and we have been looking at computers at Bestbuy.ca if you have any suggestions from that store, or NCIX.com Thanks a lot for any help you can provide!
