  1. Like if there are some programs aren't available on ipad. Also a bigger reason is that she has a monitor she wants to hook it up to to make it easier to read.
  2. And thank you to the other two commenters! I've had my eye on the envy as an option for a while so it's good to know that they're recommended.
  3. Unfortunately not, even if it works 99% of the time that 1% is very annoying to deal with.
  4. As the title says, my mom needs a laptop. I haven't followed tech too much lately so I'm not sure what some of the stronger options in the market are right now. Some thoughts/requirements below: Usage: Basic stuff like Microsoft Office, emails, etc. No gaming or heavy software. CPU: An i5 or middle or the line Ryzen 5 (I don't remember in which series Ryzen became hot - but that one and above) should be enough. RAM: I feel like 8gb would be enough but 12gb would be preferred. Storage: Similar to RAM, 256gb is acceptable but 512gb is preferred. (SSD obviously) Screen (IMPORTANT): 15.6 inches is a must to aid in reading. 1080p is sufficient, touchscreen preferred. Budget: around $900 pretax. Again, I haven't paid too much attention to tech recently so I'm not sure if this is a reasonable price to get all these features.
  5. Oh yeah I'll add the usage to my post. Mostly it'll be web browsing, word processing, and later on I'll have to do some coding and matlab. In terms of gaming the most I would do is a bit of minecraft. Would the envy hold up to that?
  6. Background Hi I'm starting school this September and am looking for laptop recommendations. Right now I'm using an old (like maybe 6 years old) laptop that I had to get repaired, and as someone who knows what it's like having a good PC, this thing is god awful to use. I know pretty much any decent laptop that's new will be a better experience. However, I do have some preferences and am looking for recommendations. Requirements CPU: Ideally an upper mid-range Ryzen RAM: 16GB because I find 8GB can on occasion be claustrophobic Screen: 13.3-14 inch 1080p IPS touchscreen SSD: 512GB preferably, maybe 256 if it's an unbelievably good deal OS: Preferably Windows 10 Pro, but Home is also okay Usage Mostly word processing, web browsing, youtube etc Later on I'll be doing programming and probably some matlab as well In terms of gaming nothing more than the occasional minecraft session Budget Between $1000-1500 CAD, I might be able to stretch it a little bit though. Also might wanna factor in the upcoming back to school sales, student discounts, rakuten, etc. Edit: This Envy x360 seems to be the frontrunner so far but I still wanna explore other options and who knows it might even go on sale in the meantime
  7. Hmmm interesting. I've been out of the tech loop for quite a while so I had to look up what shucking meant. I forgot to mention that I'm using a laptop and no longer have a a desktop PC. Assuming the drive is shuckable, is there a way to make this work without buying one of those SATA-USB adapters?
  8. So my mom has an old WD external hard drive lying around, and she needs to access the documents on it. I plugged it in to the computer, and my wireless USB mouse was immediately disconnected. The hard drive itself didn't connect either (didn't appear on windows explorer or disk management). When I unplugged the hard drive, the mouse reconnected. How do I get the hard drive to work properly?
  9. Never mind; I found a solution. I had to execute this in powershell: Get-AppXPackage -Name Microsoft.Windows.Cortana | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
  10. I can't even search. When I try to type, nothing happens. Check out this video: from the moment I click on the start menu, I type, but nothing happens. Also, clicking the search bar does nothing.Desktop 17.SEP.2015 - 02.27.00.05.mp4Desktop 17.SEP.2015 - 02.27.00.05.mp4 Desktop 25.NOV.2016 - 19.49.54.02.mp4
  11. Hello everyone! I was trying to solve I had with the windows 10 search, so I followed the steps listed here, and now search doesn't work at all for me! When I click on the start menu and start typing, nothing happens. Even when I right click the taskbar, and enable the "show search box" option, nothing happens when I click on the search box. It doesn't even pop up! Can anyone help me?
  12. Thanks, that's comforting to know. I'm still a but unsure though. Anyways, it's been over a year since the last time I was on this forum; I really just lost interest in tech and whatnot. But I still remember your username and that you've already helped me out in the past. It's good to see that the community is still strong.
  13. Yeah I knew about that feature but I didn't suspect that I'd sent it to the wrong address so... Anyways the advice is appreciated
  14. I've sent an email containing PDFs of sensitive information to the wrong address. If the email were linus@gmail.com, for example, I sent it to linus@gmai.com. What are the consequences of doing this? What happens to mail sent to scam email servers?
