  1. I have spent some time researching and your words have rang true everywhere i looked. So, why would the MOBO instructions for a 5900x platform say it will go over 4k in ram speed when the platform just will not support it? Marketing? I am thinking of just getting some 3600mhz TridentZ RGB or ripjaws (don't care about RGB. just want good quality ram) : (1900mhz*2=3800) and calling it a day. I can use my old 3000mhz for my DIY server. I did find out if you use all four slots, it will not OC over 3200. so i am going to just go with two sticks instead if i upgrade.
  2. If i buy a 4600 DDR4 gskull kit, would it run at 4600 as the Mobo will support "OC" up to 4600? I keep reading to stay away from corsair with AMD chipsets.
  3. Going to go through the github after dinner here. However the video will not help me cause the ram isn't supported under the DRAM calculator. IAW thaiphoon, i have a "8Gb A-die" and "A" die isn't an option under DRAM Cal. Was reading on redit that corsair "will swap the memory ICs used in their high-speed kits from initial release, sometimes 2-3x, and Thaiphoon Burner will still read out the original IC."
  4. HA! you are right. It isn't much of improvement, but it is better at the 3.7 stock then the ASUS Mobo auto OC option.
  5. Hello, I have read a lot with google searches and found many conflicting information. I have two sets of CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 ver 5.32 (16GB - 2x8GB ram. 3000MHz, 15-17-17-35 @ 1.35v) with a Asus Prime B550-Plus, 5900x CPU running at 4.2hz (AMD OC from MOBO), RTX 3080, 1200w seasonic PSU. My ram is running at 3000mhz with DOCP on from the mobo, however i can't seem to squeeze anymore legs out of them. I don't want to update my platform yet and the Mobo claims it will handle "4600(O.C)/4400(O.C)/4266(O.C.)/4133(O.C.)/4000(O.C.)/3866(O.C.)/3733(O.C.)/3600(O.C.)/3466(O.C.)/3333(O.C.)" with 3200 being native. Sooooooo. How do i do this? can my current set of ram that was sold to me with, "VENGEANCE LPX memory is designed for high-performance overclocking" wording on it get over the 3600 range (where i want to be right now)? The following is the stuff i have been reading: -You can't OC ram higher then the written statement on the ram. In this case, 3001+ will always crash. -Corsair sucks on AMD. They are made for intel. Not worth trying. -OC your ram from 3000 to 3600 is not worth your time or stress on your hardware. you will see zero gain(s) while gaming. photo of questionable ram for effect:
  6. Long story short, ran in to a massive issue with my truenas scale system cause i had to update to Bluefin. Which in turn means i have to reinstall ALL apps. Being a noob at coding and understanding, I am limping away at learning how to backup the datasets for each app, install new, and reinstall the old datasets. Anyway, for this issue that brought me down this rabbit hole lined in peanut butter... You gave three great examples of how to run games from the NAS (storage movement) my home setup is a 1GB network card, to a 10gb switch to a router. The NAS does have a duel 1GB network pcie card in it (currently, one line going to the switch only). If i do the iSCSI, i will need to buy a new pcie 10GB network card, Cat6E or better cable, and another 10GB Network card for the NAS? (i have: Realtek RTL8111H-CG/RTL8111HS-CG 10/100/1000M Ethernet controller in my B550-pro mobo) my goal, from watching and reading is to have all the games on the NAS and stay updated automatically. then when I am ready to play them, i just "install" or "move" them to my gaming PC. Which if the above options is best for my hardware i currently have. or, is this not worth the squeeze unless im willing to upgrade the hardware in the NAS and Gaming PC.
  7. Hello, I built my 1st home server with leftover parts and some good hard drives. Right now, I am trying to get my steam games to be installed on the server so I can free up my 1TB SSD in the gaming PC. City Skylines doesn't have an issue running. Magic the Gathering does stutter, but doesn't crash. PUB G just will not run at all. No errors, just doesn't run. - i stopped moving games over at this point -. After two months googling, I can't find anyone in the situation I am in. Please offer some advise where I am going wrong. Server: OS: TrueNAS Scale CPU: AMD Phenom II, X4 955 4 core Ram: 16GB (two sticks) Services- 12.2GiB, ZFS Cache 2GiB, Free 1.3GiB Storage: 24.4 TiB free space (iron wolf - 7200 rpm) Network: 1000Mb/s twisted pair to 1gb switch. No GPU used for hardware acceleration (MOBO can't support it. if I upgrade, planning on intel A770) IP Address: Nope. you don't get that. Steam is talking to the server by "Z:" drive. I have a "SteamLibrary" folder and a "GAMES" folder. PUB G is in the steam library folder/steamapps/common I am super noob at servers, so please include youtube video or clear instructions where I went wrong.
  8. Thanks for the reply. To answer most of the question of what I want and if I my route can support VPN, hardware/software raid, etc…. I have a lot more googling to learn then. From most of the videos I’ve seen, you build it, turn it on, install OS and follow setup list like Lego instructions. I’m in Belgium (American here for work) and don’t want to buy another router so I’m using the service provider one. Admin section is locked and the user section allows renaming of the network and basically security options. have to rethink everything from scratch.
  9. Hello, so thanks to this group, Linus and co-workers; I’m convinced I need a NAS as I’m paying a crap ton for cloud storage and Dropbox. I know, having off site storage is ideal, but this is still something I would like to do. At least I can have my phone cloud and my iPad cloud (most of my work on it). My wants/needs: macbook backup windows laptop backup windows gaming pc backup two iPhone backup two ipad backup 1.5TB of photos and family videos 1TB of movies 1.75TB of mp3 and audio editing (Logic Pro and Protools) 2 desktop or laptop (kids Xmas gift_used. OS unknown, I want to push Linux for them) backups Steam Library minecraft server (my son wants) we would like to have access to all photos, videos and files (work documents) remotely outside the network (plex?) also each for my wife to use. the complication I’m having the most is what OS to use. I want to be able to use mixed HDD sizes. I have a AMD ryzen 3 2600 (I think). 8GB of ram. Mobo only has one pcie with a gpu in it and 3 pci slots (can’t do SAS). I know it isn’t a speed demon, but it’s a start and freeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Thinking of getting WD Red NAS 5.4k rpm 6TB sata (4 of them). Running raid 5. so. Flame me and guide me. -hardware on hand too old? -HDD choice over kill? Not enough? -what OS would be flexible for everything I’m doing. I’m a noob at Linux as well. Have to google each command. Will NOT do windows server. Tried it with a 500gb in the above system and it didn’t play nice. -other plugins I should know/read about? -etc. thanks for the help.
  10. Thank you for the response. The chip 7920 was quoted from the intel website, claiming compatibility with my socket type and under 95watts. I see where the mistake is now. Thank you. my library is, BF1, BF5, Rust, World of Tanks. I’m a weekend warrior mostly with gaming. I got the 6700 used from Facebook market place for $60.00. It is also untested... so I might be shopping for a working unit if it does not work. Lol. My luck, it will make a great dimmer knob for my dinning room light switch off it doesn’t work. I don’t have 3k to poor in a system, but I also don’t want to build a brick. Thank you for the help again. LTT fans have always been much more helpful then anyone in the world.
  11. Hello, I am almost done getting the parts I need to build a gaming PC. Sadly, might need to upgrade my GPU, but Best Buy told me I will be bottle neck with the CPU I have and the MoBo. I got four sticks of ram, 8GB each DDR4 at 3,000mhz. The MoBo claims it will do 3600 on overclock, but I am not looking at doing that for gaming. The Mobo shows a Z270 intel chipset and will host a 1151 LGA i5-i7 6th and 7th gen. So I bought a 6th gen 6700 i7 3.40 base - 4.0GHz max CPU (used) thinking it will perform better then the top of the line 7th gen 7920 that has a 3.10 base and a 4.1 max for this chip set. IAW the intel website, there is nothing faster then that for the 1151 platform in the 7th gen chipset. GPU I have a 1070, but I am thinking about selling it and getting the 2080ti. This is where the buy at Best Buy turned me away from the sale, saying it will bottle neck and I need to buy a new system. Then he proceeded to show me $2,500.00 systems. What do y'all think. Am I the uneducated costumer in this case?
  12. Hello, I have been googling for a few weeks now and this is what I have learn: the number with (OC) next to it that the MoBo will have to have XMP enable on it to get to that speed, however I can't find solid guidance on the following concerns- 1. Any cons for enabling XMP on a MoBo to get to that speed? 2. Do you need to buy the ram that can support up to that OC Speed to be able to use it? Looks like native speed on that mobo is 2400. I have a older board Z270GT8 that shows it supports 3600(OC)/ 2400/ 2133/ 1866 MHz. Nothing in between those numbers (odd it think). So, educated guess, if I want to run the ram at 3600, i need to buy the 3600 ram, go in the bios and 'enable XMP'. Looks like most of the ram at the 3600 range has 'intel XMP 2.0' ready, so that shouldn't be an issue now. Just not a lot on the market for this ram. Memory Express, Newegg and Tiger Direct, all has limited options. Thanks in advance for the help. https://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=860#specification
  13. Hello, All my planning is almost done in building a custom PC case from a old broken radio case, 1070 mini or 2070 mini (might have a deal from a crack head lol) and getting a i7 chip above 3.2ghz with 32Gb of ram. This system will be VR ready, run online videos, iTunes movies and we will be installing a Nas so all the photos from 8 external hard drives will be together and organized. Question: wife has a Mac book pro, I run a MSI gaming laptop (will never buy one again) and we want to be able to take photos, plug it in the computer, upload it to the Nas and access when we want. Organization would be great if it auto group everything by folders, year and month. Meaning, “2018” folder with 12 sub folders for each month. Is is there a program that someone knows about that works flawlessly for Pc and Mac? google search dosnt yeild non-bias results.
  14. Very true. So, our 'needs' is changing now... My wife wants my son to be able to do basic gaming. Minecraft type of stuff. he is 6 years old going on to 7. I know this isn't video demanding, but i'm thinking about VR in the next three years. Just think it will be the Cat's @ss if they fix the space issue and motion sickness. The RTX doesn't have mini cards available yet and we honestly don't know if they are any good yet. I'm thinking now about getting a i7 or better quad core 3.0+mhz 16GB ram (with a MoBo able to handle 32GB) 1080ti mini or 1070ti mini. Need around 750 watt PSU. Let me know if I am on the right track, over doing it or if there is something coming up in rumors I haven't heard about and should wait on shopping for the parts.
  15. would the 2200g or i3 be okay for a year or two down the line. Just don't want to rebuild every two years. My wife isn't very good relearning how something works. The Raid 4. maybe I am not as educated on it as i thought. idea is to have four to six drives and have a completely redundant copy of it's self. If I remember correctly, that would be a raid 4? IE: Drive A/B/C/D. A/B works as one and C/D is a clone of A/B. I'm thinking of using windows. been running linux on my mining rig to learn how to use linux and been playing with the mining program and how that works at it's core for about a year or two (no doing it for money and the entire rig is craigslist used parts). I do not feel comfortable enough for my family to use linux for online streaming and video playback.
