  1. So with this I just set it up like a second router? I am skimming through the instructions and it doesn't look like I need any special equipment for it. It's just powered by POE and has the adapter included with it. This might be what I go with. What's the realistic range on this?
  2. Yes I have power in the garage. My understanding with power line adapter is that they need to be on the same circuit (same breaker in the panel). Feel free to correct me If my understanding is wrong. I have two circuits going to the garage but no outlets in the house are on those circuits.
  3. I bought my house a few years ago, and I have a cheep 2.4/5ghz wifi router that doesn't quite reach to my garage. With everything going on I have been spending a lot of time in my garage doing lots of projects like wood working, maintenance on the cars, etc. I often need to look up things for reference or a tutorial video and I would rather be on wifi. I do not believe a wire line adapter would work. I don't have a circuit with outlets both inside and in the garage. I could dig a trench and run a cable underground but I feel like that is a lot of work, and I would still need another router or access point anyways. Does anyone have a suggestion for a general router/wifi upgrade. Maybe something that I can set up multiple access points easily. I was thinking I could have one access point inside and an outdoor one I could on the exterior wall of my house so I can get a signal in my yard and garage.
  4. Ok, I'll go through my list of other stuff I might want to add, like cameras etc, and see if the POE switch is worth it. I think I will be getting one of these two switches. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GG1AD9A/?coliid=I49OPSVPQ2YY&colid=VXSEDEOJWDM2&psc=0 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GG1ADLS/?coliid=I1PZH0YBKZMIBA&colid=VXSEDEOJWDM2&psc=0
  5. Thanks for the all the explanations. I think I will look for a smart switch those netgear ones that razor mentioned look pretty good. On amazon at least the 24 port with POE looks to be about $100 more than the non POE switch. Can I use the POE ports like regular ports as well? I could see adding in some security cameras in the future but probably only 2 so I am not sure that it is worth it.
  6. All I really need is rack mountable, at least 24 ports (I am trying to have everything in my house hardwired), and the faster the better. as well as basic internet stuff I have a plex server that goes over LAN, and I am moving large files around quite a bit over the network so higher speed is good. I don't really need POE. I have heard about unmanaged, managed, and smart switches and I don't really know what each does.
  7. I am having an odd issue with my current switch, I am only getting about 10megs on any device connected to the switch, but I can get well over 200 if I connected to my router. I want to upgrade, and I'll be buying a small server rack soon so I want to get something rack mountable(is that a word?). my current switch is a 16 port and filled up so I need to go up in size. does anyone have a good suggestion that won't completely break the bank. I don't have a set budget but I am looking for a good value and I just don't know enough about this to feel confidant in my choice.
