  1. ok a small update here, nothing fancy but my friend managed to do something really simple he did not reinvented the wheel but it just worked, he disabled the GPU Worked like a charm, now the laptop works. so those tiny heatpipes could not handle the gpu+cpu so disabling the gpu for normal desktop use made the job a lot easier for the heatpipes to dissipate all that heat, he is not a gamer and he just needs to work so now he can. This is so simple i actually feel a bit dumb posting it here but i'm almost sure this can help someone else.
  2. Well if i sell you a car with a V12 that can only go up to 30mph and stops because it overheats and the brand tells you it is fine... You would be at least having a bad day, but thank you, I'm passing him this information, when you put an i9 with a cooler like that brands are basicly mocking people, Specially people that know nothing about computers and think bigger is better (it was the case), he paid a lot more for something that never worked at 100%. I have no idea how this is legal. If i knew he would be buying an i9 on such a slim laptop i would instantly tell him to get a normal laptop or a desktop instead. I have a simpler cheaper zenbook with an i5 and it just works properly. that i9 has no breathing space at all i think that asus has some blame here, this is pure false advertising, because you have the muscle inside but no way to cool it so it even works worse than a cheaper one (i saw some LTT videos specifically about this). This is always a bad deal for the customer so... brands are to blame for sure. When he told me problems came after some months i forgot to mention that this is true, he did not use the laptop very often and when he wanted to use it he complained about the temperatures to the store where he bought it and when he opened the laptop to check if something was wrong since there were some very weird marks on the copper tubes so he thought the store sold him a refubished laptop (no idea if this is possible). They also said to him that there is some weird fan curve problem and asus does not care since warranty is over. The picture is not very good but it was what he sent me so... Sorry but yes in a way this is very sad. if it was for me i would try to remove it from the case and make a weird desktop out of it just for spite I love asus products and hate wathing my friends falling for this. And thanks again, the thread was in fact me hoping for some weird aftermarket solution so that i could help him save the pc.
  3. So a friend of mine got this laptop and a few months later problems started, it has an i9, heats too much and he has no idea what to do, went back to the store, warranty is over. Asus says they dont know what to do and that it is "normal for an i9 to run at 99 degrees c" so they basically sent him back home pissed with a very expensive laptop. He does not want to sell the laptop and trick a person to buy a broken pc, but it is impossible to use it, bios is locked, the fan curve cannot be modified and he does not even know if he can downclock it a bit. Opened with a big fan pointing to the opened heat pipes the cp works properly and the temperatures go down to normal values but that is not a laptop anymore, it is a frankenstein solution for something asus is not dealing with. They just sold overpowered laptops without warning people and as soon warranty ends the internet is full of people complaining about them stopping to work or just burning them and running very slow. Anyone knows a decent solution for my friend? like a custom heatpipe solution for this model or how to convert it to any case making it a destkop ? as long he is properly cooled he works very well. Also it looks like it was designed so that fans only start when the cpu reaches 90º c
  4. I kind of already work this way when it comes to server administration and some other things i have a server that i RDP into that has access to some windows servers and linux vm's this whole idea was for personal utilization. However i see that if i install the same programs on all pc's and save my work on a personal cloud i can probably do it, i was just asking so that i could avoid the work of making my own new cloud server. Then i can save all big data into that or a NAS and try to have that folder syncronized with all the pc's. It is probably what i will end up doing. I'm going to see if there is anything like "yourowncloud" out there that can do it with a home nas.
  5. the main idea was like what one pc had, the other has too, from software to all files and folders.
  6. Is there any way to keep 2 windows or more machines (via software) in sync. I don't think we need to go as deep as cloning windows but at least to pick up everything i want on 2 pc's or laptops so that when i need to use a pc or travel i can just open it and know that he will sync all the programs and information so that i can resume work, or before leaving the house just powering up the latoptop and he syncs whyle on wifi to save data and then just go with the laptop and the work on the go. It's just this. I know that most people probably just save the most crytical work on dropbox or other online services but my idea was to also have the programs i want in sync with a laptop or 2 thanks in advance
  7. Hi, i have an old computer with a core2quad and i'm using it as a plex media server, but he cannot handle what i need to do now, wanted to make a in-house server with some virtualization/hosting and databases and so on. I wanted to do this for a long time but now i have 2 fiber connections at my house, pretty decent 200mbps upload in one of them, 100mbps upload on the other, 1000mbps downlonad on each. I can use a DMZ or something similar and use them for pure hosting + no-ip service or even ask my isp's for dedicated ip's, i manage a lot of server so mx records can be somewhere else so no problem there, i have multiple UPS and i wanted to make a more powerfull virtualization server or nas that can hold a lot more. Or even multiple servers. I also have and old core i5 with motherboard here stopped in a box + 16gb of good ddr3 ram but it is a 4core4thread cpu pretty much like the core2quad. So looking at my options, i wanted to ask here because a lot of you did stuff like this, do i go for a mid dize rack and buy some old servers and start from there? is that the path? 16gb of ram and 4 cores will not help me that much, one of the servers i want to move home is basicly a very expensive 64 core, 256gb of ram server with a 2tb ssd at ovh france and it's being used to manage stats for email applications, this server is not crytical and is super expensive. (in my build it does not need to be this powerfull also) Also i wanted to do something that is almost mandatory, i need to put watercooling to avoid having to hide the servers on the garage because of the noise and avoid humidity problems. I know that this is not simple nor is it a 1 step build, it will take time, i probably need more decent switches and hardware i didn't take into account yet. One of the clients will even be super happy because he is paying a lot to OVH for a non-crytical server to be on and just get backups every day. 2 Other clients even offered to pay my internet and electrical bill and this is suposed to be a fun project. PS: yes backups will be on another different place so no problem there. names, models, brands, recommendations, budjet options, ideas? thanks in advance
  8. A friend of mine with the same isp told me today that he bought an high-end asus router and only uses the isp to forward traffic to the router with 2 good gigabit cables probably using DMZ or something and then the asus router controls it all. it is not a bad idea but i dont want to waste 200€ or more on a router just because of a dns problem. for now i fixed with this untill someone else has a better idea
  9. well... unless someone else has a better idea i "fixed" the problem like this edited the hosts file added: 192.168.1.8 wdmycloud and all other ip's from my other computers on my pc and home server and now they work
  10. Thanks everyone for the reply and i can in fact confirm that the problem is that my computer when resolving names on the lan is trying to contact my dns server on the network card. so if i use 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 it says this C:\Users\droidman>nbtstat -a wdmycloud Ethernet 5: Node IpAddress: [169.254.73.158] Scope Id: [] Host not found. Ethernet 6: Node IpAddress: [169.254.3.124] Scope Id: [] Host not found. so 169.254.3.124 = 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com So all of you are right. One small problem, my router does not allow me to change DNS on the router. I'm from Portugal and my provider is called 'NOS' it uses a Hitron router here is a pic: On the modem it says "ZON" wich whas their previous name now they changed it a little. They are the biggest internet provider in my country and i have a 200mbps connection with them. But the problem is well documented, i can't change dns on their firmware and it is impossible to change the firmware also. so... i think that i have no other way, either i have lan conflicts or i use their DNS and have piratebay and some other websites locked
  11. yes it is strange. i updated synergy now and it is working, but wdmycloud is having a lot of problems. maybe some rule on the router is making this. im also going to check the mycloud settings. maybe i will find something there too
  12. I use programs like synergy to use 1 mouse and keyboard on my pc and a mac and i have some other network devices like a WDmycloud and a home server and in the past few months i'm having a lot of problems when i use DNS that are not from my router. For example 1.1.1.1 or google's 8.8.8.8 and then my internet works fine, but when i try to open \\wdmycloud it only works by direct ip and it is slow as hell, when on my windows home server or on my pc's i put my 192.168.1.1 dns server from the router, everything works back again. This also makes my computer unable to find other synergy computers and many other problems that i dont remembe right now. but the thing is, can i use 1 dns for one range like 192.168.1.0/24 and other dns for the rest of the world on all my computers, or is it impossible ? thanks
  13. Thanks coyotetracker and everyone else that helped here.
  14. Ok i'm going with the Define R6 thanks for the help. Any suggestion on a good AIO 240 or 360 to put on the front of that case for my cpu? i really need to keep it cooler and my current dual fan 120mm aio jumps the fans every time i try a game even fifa 18
  15. I want to keep 6 to 7 drives but in the future i might add more. i still have space for a m.2 so i might add another m.2 wich does not take space on the case and add bigger normal drives to remove 2 or 3 so yes i have space to add and remove here and there. some of the drives i have are old and i need to update them. adding another big drive might make me remove a lot of them yes i wanted to go up to about 200€ by the way thanks for the fast reply. this forum is amazing
