I just built my parents a new PC and took their old Dell Inspiron 545S for the sake of hanging on to it. I've been building computers for a while but, ironically, I don't keep up with the tech world and am a bit behind in terms of the newest things out there. I just moved into a new house and got internet/tv service and recently learned about streaming services. I don't watch much TV so the thought of cutting my cable bill in half inspired me to buy a Roku. I'm still keeping the cable until I better familiarize myself with streaming and get comfortable with it but, I also just learned about streaming personal media locally/remotely through an NAS device. After reading about what an NAS is, I figured I could try and convert the old Dell into my own "NAS". Ultimately, my goals would be to be able to stream all my media (movies, pictures, music) onto tvs in my house and maybe even remotely on other tvs (multiple streams, 2-3 at most). My recent DL/UL speedtest resulted in 116/11 Mbps, which hopefully is enough.
1. Would it be worth it to convert the old Dell to acomplish this or would it be better to build my own from scratch?
2. If building my own is the better route, are there specific parts which are better geared for streaming media?
I thought of buying a NAS but looking at their prices / hardware, building one seemed like the better route, but I don't know any better which is why I came here
