  1. Thanks both of you for the support link I did try logging in to the FP website with no luck. I'll have to wait to hear back from support.
  2. Not exactly sure where this topic goes so forgive me if its in the wrong place. As of 3 days ago I can no longer find the floatplane forum on the LTT website. Usually this means a bill didn't go through so I checked my bank transactions and... ... 2 bills went through within the space of 3 days. I still don't have access and I don't know how to regain access without resubscribing and sending a 3rd bill through. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance.
  3. If you can find a refurbished one then definitely go for it and you should save a couple hundred dollars. The only real issue with refurbished laptops is the write counts on the SSD, which isn't that crucial anyway seeing that SSD's last for ages.
  4. I'm looking for a laptop myself. Maybe have a look at the Dell XPS 13 (9360/70), or XPS 15 9560 if you can afford it. Settle for the i7 8550U or i7 7700HQ (they are equally as powerful). The higher end Dells have arguably the best 4K screen in a laptop and PCIe SSD's. My recommendation would be a 4k XPS 13 9360 with i7 8550U, 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM. There's one on ebay from the US with a QHD screen. https://m.ebay.ca/itm/NEW-DELL-XPS-13-9360-13-3-QHD-Touch-8th-Gen-i7-8550U-16GB-RAM-512GB-SSD-PCIe/323290716991?hash=item4b45a0db3f:g:NXMAAOSwT2daFFOo
  5. It might be possible. I don't know too much about Mac OS but if you installed windows on the drive using another device, then installed all the necessary Mac drivers on the same drive, it could potentially work.
  6. Not sure what the insides on a Macbook Air look like but if you can you should just remove the 128GB SSD, wipe it on another device, install windows and stick it back in.
  7. You can keep the SSD in the Macbook. Apple has a program called bootcamp that lets you run Windows on a Mac. SSHD's are rather overrated. I would opt for your 128GB SSD and buy a 1TB Barracuda and an External HDD enclosure.
  8. Hey guys, Wasn't sure whether to put this in the mining or build plan forum. Forgive me if it's in the wrong one. I read somewhere that it is possible to mine XMR using a Ryzen Threadripper CPU. Apparently the algorithm relies on 2MB of L3 Cache per thread to mine, which means that the algorithm will use 16 threads (8 cores), while the other cores and threads remain unused, which means one is effectively left with an 1800X that fits in a TR4 socket (if you use the 1950X). The 1950X supposedly pulls in around 1350H/s and draws about 100W while doing so. I punched these numbers into whattomine and came out with a yearly profit of ~$570AUD. The CPU costs around $1350AUD but it is not solely dedicated to mining and therefore a quick ROI is less important to me. And no, I don't want the 1920X because I'll only have 4 cores and 8 threads left over, which isn't enough for my workload. For those who are interested, I plan to couple it with an AORUS X399 motherboard, 16GB 3200Mhz or faster RAM, a GTX 1070 (they actually sell for under RRP here in Aus.) and a 512GB NVME SSD. There are 2 things I want to know: 1) Will my overall profitability increase if I overclock the CPU? (Hash rate will increase but so will TDP). And to what extent should I OC it to maximise profitability? 2) Am I better off just buying a cheaper 1800X (or 2700X) and not worry about mining?
  9. Check out linus' truckflipper... i mean, threadripper build. Alternatively you could use his RGB build. Alternatively again, you could combine them both. My advice with the build would be to get unique with it. Maybe you want it refrigeration cooled? Maybe you want a tiny itx build packed with powerful hardware and RGB? If you have the money to throw at it, the possibilities are endless.
  10. 8600k is a solid choice. Wait for ryzen 2 though and see what it has to offer.
  11. An 860 Evo can be had for pretty much the same price as an 850 Evo (at least in Australia) and is considerably faster. Might be worth checking out.
  12. The 1800x isn't quite as fast in gaming (~4%) but is faster in worstation use cases where its 8 cores can be utilised. Realsitically however, you won't notice too much of a difference in gaming. If you want to wait around, the 2700x is rumoured to be a good 10% faster than the 8700k, but it'll be pricy. Also to be noted, cooler master make really cheap aio's that from what I've seen in reviews work just as well as their pricy counterparts. They're RGB too. Coolermaster Masterliquid series
  13. Ryzen CPUs are really cheap now due to the imminent release of Ryzen 2 (April 19th is the current rumour). An 1800X should be around $50-80 cheaper. It's almost $100 cheaper here in aus. Likewise, AM4 motherboards are also generally slightly cheaper and with similar features (minus TB3 and type c usb on most of them). Also, I noticed GPU prices have started dropping slightly over the last few weeks. It might be worth waiting it out a month or so to see if they get any cheaper. Plus, that is a very expensive 1080ti. Are there any cheaper ones on the market right now? Another thing that might be worth considering: do you need DDR4-3866 RAM? Slower RAM like 3200 or 3000 will save you a lot of money.
  14. I would wait for the XPS 15 2 in 1. It's very thin, has decent graphics, a 15 hour battery life and a 4.1ghz quad core in it. If you can't wait then I would probably go the gigabyte. If you have price in mind then I would go with last year's xps 15. If you need it as a workstation I'd get the MBP (an entry level 15 inch) along with a $100 satechi dongle to get all your i/o back. If you really hate OSX then you can bootcamp to windows, but that largely defeats the purpose of it being a workstation (OSX is better for productivity).
  15. Another option I can consider now is getting the 100W Hades Canyon NUC ?. Putting 32gb RAM and a 512gb 960 pro in there would cost me around 2 grand all up I think. Thank you Intel and AMD!!
