I just wanted to make sure I was taking the right path, I'm not as tech savvy as I would like to be. ?

So I am given the task to update/fix my mother's co-workers movie disaster. He has a Dell Laptop that runs Windows 7, hasn't been updated since 2015, and he has an assortment of movies (.avi) On a Toshiba external hardrive. Only 3 of the movie files show the images and play the audio, on Windows movie player. I have been trying to see if a update is desperately needed, or if I should download VLC for him. Thanks for the help!
