  1. What I was talking about with the OS affecting it was the LED labeled BOOT_DEVICE_LED which stays red. I'm assuming that is because there is (currently) no bootable SATA drives available..? I'm not sure how to change to ide on the z170 I only see options for AHCI and RAID.. but I'll try to find it online. I'm trying to get Windows 10 Pro via USB also.. I read somewhere that newer computers can't install Windows 10 from USB... you wouldn't happen to have any word on that would you...? Sorry I know it's off topic, just thought I'd ask. If not it's all good.
  2. Hey guys I'm so tired I've been up for the last like 2 hours trying to figure out why my hard drive will not show up when I boot my Asus z170 now it's literally 4:50 in the morning and I got work tomorrow so I can't give any more time to this project. So I've just built this computer and it's my first build the hard drive I got was a 1 terabyte SATA hard drive by WD "6 Gb/s" and the motherboard is compatible as well as all three SATA cables I have tried.. I've tried and tried again, quadrouple checked secure cable connections.. tried different ports and bleh... Even tried pin jumping to 3gb/s just in case it couldn't run 6gb... The only other major thing I've done is did a bios update to be sure the proper drivers were all installed for bios.. I'm not sure if this is JUST because I haven't got an OS on it yet or if it is because it has no HDD being detected... Or something worse.. idk I'm getting so tired of fighting this thing, but point is, the boot device led is steady red.. The only thing I've left to think is that my brand new WD HDD is just faulty... Before I RMA it.. anyone have any further ideas? Btw. I don't have an SSD. it's still default to AHCI and... Okay I changed zero settings.. so yeah.. thoughts...? Sorry about the rant..
  3. Anyone else have any thoughts or ideas?
  4. Hahaha I literally had just finished reading that article right before I decided to check for replies to my post. Ty tho! I have done everything there.. I'm wondering if I shorted the thing from touching it without discharging myself... ?
  5. Hey guys.. so I have a Z170-AR and the CPU LED is red on boot. This is a first build so it's not like it crashed. Lol I've disconnected everything but CPU and mobo power. No gpu no HDD no anything extra. Onestick of RAM in and tested it in every slot. I've checked the pins on the mobo cpu slot, and wiped the CPU bottom side with 99% isopropyl alcohol. I've set it outside the chassis to make sure the chassis WAS NOT SHORTING IT. I've come to the conclusion that the mobo or processor is bad... Half of the posts I've read said it's 90% usually the Mobo.. but every time I read an article specific to the Mobo with it saying the red led was one and not posting or booting into bios they said the CPU was bad... I live in nowhere land and I've called literally every shop in a 50 mile radius.. NO one has a test bench, NO one has lga1151 CPUs I can test or even buy new. NO one has a modern Mobo for me to test or even buy new... I'm really stuck I'm considering purchasing an ASUS ROG STRIX... ***Warning.. pointless ranting*** I really hate to spend MORE money when I'm ALREADY $350 over budget... I just need a VR CAPABLE PC. I've got more important things to do with it than just sit and fighting with it to get it to just WORK. So tired of people selling complete trash and getting away with it... It's terrible business and it makes me sick.. ?? ***End pointless ranting*** Before I go and spend money on something that i may not even need to... Anyone have any recommendations...? I'd insert this note above but my phone is acting glitchy when I type over previously added text... Anyhow, I've also already done both a CMOS reset and a CTRTC wipe.. I'll try to attach a video of what it does if my phone decides to stop acting stupid... Ty to anyone who has legitimate input. VID_20171110_184236282.mp4
  6. This is my first build. ASUS Z170-AR MOBO Corsair Vengeance DDR4 32GB Corsair HX750i PSU i5 6600k Okay so this is my first build, but not my first time inside a PC and it's hardware. I bought the PSU refurbished, the ram, mobo, and processor out of the box but lightly used. There's nothing more to it, power flies through then in an instant shuts off. All the fans and LEDs turns on with it, and likewise turn off with it. I've tested all the RAM in all the slots and in all configurations I could think of. I cannot do the paperclip test on the PSU because it is all black cables.. ive also done a CMOS reset with the battery, two things keep pointing me towards the RAM. 1) for the moment that it turns on, the DRAM_LED turns red. Until of course everything loses power 2) in the user manual for the mobo, it doesn't actually list approved compatibility with the RAM I'm using... That is. The long serial or whatever it is. (CMU32GX4M4C3000C15R) Not really sure how to test anything else. I have no spare parts that are known compatible with the rig. And lastly. No beeps. Not sure if that's because I just need a chassis speaker or just because it isn't even getting that far... It is pretty instant shutoff. Here's a quick startup vid. received_1536152726472068.mp4
  7. Just as a fun update, using the info you guys all gave me I was able to come up with this new build: Mother Board + CPU: $100 GPU: $250 RAM: $110 Chassis + PSU + HDD: $40 TOTAL: $500 Right on the money lads! Thanks again! Especially to @JM21 You guys helped quite a bit.... now I just have to hope that they will all hold the parts for just a couple more days when I happen to be in Portland for the VR/AR Meetup by Joshua Young! hahaha!
  8. Alright man, I'll definitely look into it. Thank you again for the help!
  9. @JM21 I'm not quite sure yet, I know I'd like to, but considering I've 1) never done it and would need to research how and 2) don't have any type of sufficient cooling system budgeted in. I may just stick to something as you said, "non 'k' skew" for now.. My primary focus above all is to get something that runs VR. If I can get that without overclocking, then I most likely won't overclock. But thank you for that pointer as well. I'm glad to see that this forum is actually active.. I am very tired of forums where you have to wait ten days to get a response.
  10. @dogetorhueI will take a look at more affordable CPUs that are also LGA 1151 and @JM21 Thank you for confirming their compatibility.
  11. As an example of one of the "VR Ready" computers I was looking at before this, Alienware Aurora Alienware 17" Laptop Bestbuy...
  12. Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum, but not forums in general. I recently was inspired to attempt to build my own PC for once rather than just buying and upgrading from Linus's channel. I have spent several hours browsing Craigslist around my area for parts I need, here's the goal: I need to build a VR capable desktop PC for cheaper than prebuilt "VR Ready" PCs. I feel like the price I've totaled to is alright, but not as much as I expected. I'm using the NVIDIA VR Guide as a point of reference here. Briefly speaking, I wanted to develop VR within Unity on my laptop, so I purchased the HTC Vive, and quickly discovered that, although my HP Elitebook Workstation had a great processor, and RAM (i7 vPro + 8Gb ddr3) the GPU was.. well a Quadro k1000m... needless to say.. 5 years out of date.. and I first started towards simply replacing the k1000m with a gtx 980m.. but it appears that, although it'd be alright, it wouldn't be optimal for development purposes... not to mention a real pain to change out the gpu in a laptop! So after I concluded I wanted to build a Desktop, I quickly got to work and found these parts (USD): Mother Board - Asus Z170-Deluxe ATX - $100 GPU - MSI GeForce 1060 6gb - $250 CPU (Option 1) - i7 7700k - $300 RAM - Corsair DDR4 3000Mhz 16gb - $110 Chassis, HDD, PSU - Thermaltake V3 Case, 500gb HDD, 500watt PSU - $40 Total: $800 I am looking for input from two points, 1.) I feel unsure whether this came out as financially beneficial as I expected... Although I did make sure each of these items was fairly priced individually in comparison to other used sellers, but still, on average I wanted to make sure anyone reading this feels that I'm getting each part for a fair price. 2.) I need to have more experienced PC builders verify that all of these parts are compatible so I don't go buy them all and find myself with only half of a computer! I currently have ~$500 USD and I find most "VR Ready" prebuilt PCs are between $1k - $1.5k so I'm not 100% sure whether I've got the best out of my time.. and considering I haven't called anyone yet to see if they'll deliver or mail to me, I may have to add gas into the equation... I feel like I'm really sacrificing some other components of prebuilt PCs which in turn makes me feel like building it this way is coming out about even with the price of a prebuilt. I can get the extra cash loaned to me from my brother and pay him back next payday, but I'd prefer if it was more around my current $500 budget... idk if that's very realistic for a VR situation though.. An extra third input I could use also 3.) Anyone have recommendations of parts that could be downgraded to lower the price without losing a significant performance rating within a VR environment? I'm brand new to VR so I don't know what is the most important aspects that affect it, although I'd assume the GPU is, I was considering a lower end MB and CPU.. but maybe that'd lower performance in another area.. I'm pretty intermediate when it comes to PC Hardware. Any other input in general is also welcome and appreciated!
