  1. Thanks for the info. Yea I did assume that with the m.2. I did want larger versions of the ssd but it was 5 years ago and money constraints kinda dictated what I got the mechanical drives are my biggest (at 4 and 8 tb) and got added to it later when old drive died. my next build ( once reviews for new ryzen and 40series are out ( well assuming a certain youtuber manages to test before dropping them ) and i can see prices and comparison for current and nxt gen )is gonna be a ssd only system with my current system being turned into a server for storage/plex and game servers. Just hoping my current system lasts or I sell both my kidneys to pay for a new one. Once again thanks for info
  2. Hi all I'm having a weird issue during post. I've got a ryzen 1700x 32gb ram system with 4 hdd in it ( 1 nvme m.2 250gbas os drive, 1 ssd 250gb and 2 mechanical drive ) and during post most of the time only 3 of then ever show in post (the m.2 doesn't show so I assumed it's a m.2 thing) but occasionally only 2 show up. All works fine after boot into os though. Is it a sign ones about to bite the dust? Thanks for any assistance.
  3. Hi people hopefully some one can help me out with this as google seems to fail for me for once.. What im trying to accomplish is have the 5.1 audio from my xbox 1 x to play from my pc (ideally while my pc sounds still work as i tend to watch stuff on pc as i play). i have tried an external dac but all i have with them are issues (as i only have a cheap pc set of speakers(3 stereo plug ones) and cheapish dac. i have also tried the streaming xbox to pc although video quality does drop a little only seems its capable of streaming in stereo. have also looked into getting a soundcard with optical input but it seems that none of the ones available (for a reasonable cost) seem to not have decoding functionality so once again only stereo.. i did find a creative card that did it but it doesnt seem to be made anymore and 2nd hand prices are stupidly expensive for them.. i was wondering if anyone has any ideas how i would accomplish this i am planning an a/v receiver purchase in the future but for now im looking for a cheaper option to bide me over till i can afford a good atmos setup thanks for any advice its most appreciated
  4. Hi all I'm planning on running a spare pc as a game server , plex and poss nas now my trouble is how to go about it as I have zero experience with Linux. Now plan one (easiest for me due to windows knowledge) is just install windows on it as some game dedi servers (ark server manager for example) are only windows and plex is fine on windows and forget about a nas. Plan 2 is to install Linux and use wine for windows only dedicated servers and Linux for everything else. I'm just not sure how well wine would run them or how I'd set them up from within wine. Plan 3 run 2 (or3) virtual machines on same pc. 1 linux for linux able servers and possibly plex (or seperate vm just for plex), 1 windows 10 for everything else. I'm just not sure if I could do the splitting cpu ect with my amd phenom (not sure exact model thou its am3 and 8 core) as I think you need a virtualisation capable cpu and not sure this one is. At the moment windows is easiest thou I do know that the linux route is best for a server. Was hoping one of you server gods on here could advise me as to if wine is good enough for running servers (ie ark server manager) through it or if its possible for me to do plan 3 and have 2 seperate vms on same pc. Thanks for any help or advice .. most appreciated.
  5. Thanks for the reply. Ideally no .. but if it keeps on doing it it's gonna have to be. I do tend to do a reinstall every couple of months and I do think I'm due one. my latest one of this issue basically fixed it self after resets and a dozen or so restarts and attempts to boot into safe mode (none of which actually managed it) .. It's working for now so just gonna backup stuff for when I do do it.. Just not got a lot of time to do it atm with overtime at work and Xmas crap. It's just weird as there's never a certain fix or obvious cause and it's that that annoys me most. I'm my family's resident tech support and for once a problems got me stumped and I hate being defeated by tech ? Once again thanks for reply
  6. Hi all .. firstly thanks for reading. My issue is that sometimes (And not reapeatable) randomly my pc will stick at the windows 10 logo (with the spinning dots .. not a freeze as dots keep spinning) now sometimes it will just boot after anywhere from a few minutes (which on a nvme m.2 is weird in itself) to 30+ mins, other times it just wont boot .. have tried to reseat all cables ect tried safemode(which mostly i never get to boot into) tried cmd stuff too and usually after messing with it for an hr or 2 it just boots though I can never figure out what actually fixes it as it allways seems to be something different each time. Was wondering if anyone had a definate cause as it's starting to really P me off now. Thanks for any advice Ps, pc specs Ryzen 7 1700x Msi x370 gaming pro Samsung 250gb nvme m.2 (boot drive) Dual 250gb ssd in raid 2 4tb hdd Msi gaming x nvidia 1080ti
  7. hmm more research on the matter and im still getting nowhere lol .. at this rate it seems its gonna be cheaper for me to just buy a 2nd set of speakers and a DAC for tv/ps4 and keep my pc setup as is ... i really didnt want an extra 7 or 8 wires behind my already 'millions' of cables.. thanks for any advice already given and any advice to be given though . I wont be setting this all up for a week or 2 anyway so i got more research time
  8. yea thats what i was assuming would happen .. im still shocked no company out there has thought of making a pc into a sort of av reciever with a pcie card
  9. .. damn .. i will have a look n see if i can pick an x-fi up .. i doubt it but thanks all the same .. would a y split 3.5mm work do you think? ie usuing a splitter to join 2 sets (of 3 plugs) of analog togeather into just 1 set (of 3 3.5mm jacks)
  10. you dont happen to know of a pcie card that does it do you? .. been looking for about a month now and all i can find is that older creative cards did (well 1 or 2 models of x-fi series) but trying to find one and also support for it in win 10 seems like finding a needle in a stack of haystacks
  11. hi all been looking into doing this for a while and can never find an answer to it so thought id ask on here as a last chance. what im after doing is getting an audio signal from my tv (netflix app and ps4) into my pc and out of my pc surround speakers. now i origonally assumed all i would need is a soundcard with optical input on it (soundblaster z) and having the tv output via optical cable to the sound card but upon further research it appears it does take in audio but only stereo, apparently creative removed it due to some DRM crap or something similar and i am unable to find a similar sound card which does have the decoding. i did look into the external DAC's but they seem to be one source at once ie either tv audio or pc audio .. ideally i would want both as i watch stuff while im playing games ect i did also look at just buying a receiver but i seem to come up to the above issues where i can only have one source at once and ideally i would want both the tv audio and the pc audio at the same time through the same speakers.. i did also consider getting a DAC and just y splitting the 3.5mm jacks from pc and dac togeather into my speakers but from what i could gather this is a bad move with possibility of blowing up speakers. i still cant believe there isnt a audio input for surround for pc, i cant be the only person whose entertainment systems all route through my pc thanks for any help or assistance
  12. Hi all Thanks for reading this . my issue is my pc will hard reset itself (ie turn off and on again) whenever i play a game on 4k and that game has a lot going on .. ie gta v when explosions happen or elite dangerous when entering stations, tried both 4096x2160 ,3840x2160(recomended) same result where as on 1080p (1920x1080) its fine and i can play all day and no issues. i do run most games on max graphics settings all the time except a few online ones for lag relief. although i have tried diff settings and sometimes it alleviates it a bit other times no diff now i thought id be ok with my system specs to run at those settings and resolution AMD Fx 8350 , 32gb ddr3 , MSI Gaming 1080ti (recent upgrade) , 750w corsair psu , 4 slot usb 3 pcie (for oculus rift) only things i can think of as could be an issue are either power supply isnt supplying enough power for when the system wants it or that my cpu just isnt up to the task as temps are all fine .. (cpu 25-30 idle 55 usual max .. gfx 60 max) i did at first think the graphics card was faulty as ive never had the issue before on my old card (gtx970) but that is a lower power card so thats why i thought it could be power supply. thought id ask for the wisdom of the board as my brain is stumpted on it .. im hoping its power supply thou as other option is an £800 option thanks for any and all advice
