  1. A few months ago my PC stops booting and instead just sits there with all the fans spun up but no display output. Trying to find the problem, I try my friend's compatible CPU and RAM in my system w/o drives or GPU and a different monitor connected to onboard graphics. Same thing. I assume this is a dead mobo so I buy a replacement. Same thing again. At this point I try my friend's PSU with my system as well as a different CPU heatsink, all resulting in the same thing. Is there any other possibility other than the power supply having fried both my old and new motherboard? As far as I'm aware I've completely exhausted any other potential problems, but I want to be absolutely sure before I commit to replacing it. If you're curious: PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G2 CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 RAM: G.Skill F4-3200C14D-16GFX MB: Asrock AB350 ITX (previously), Asrock B450 ITX (currently) Thanks for the help folks! - rabo
  2. Have been having issues with what I thought was my CPU (Ryzen) for ages (randomly not booting until I clear cmos'd and lowered clock speed to very low numbers) until a week ago my computer just ceased to boot whatsoever. The fans spin up and such but the screen just stays black (even after removing all hdds/graphics card/all but one ram stick). Using my friend's fully functional CPU and ram in my motherboard gives the same result, and using my CPU in his works fine. I'm pretty new to troubleshooting hardware issues - would y'all agree that this looks like a dead motherboard? Is there anything else I could do to try to save it before I drop some cash on a new one? Thanks :)! EDIT: almost forgot! It's an ASRock AB350
  3. Can anyone else confirm that I can successfully reinstall Windows 10 using a Windows 10 product key on a new motherboard? I want to be sure before I proceed. EDIT: Microsoft confirmed for me. Thanks for the help everyone
  4. The copy of Windows on my old build was originally 8 and later upgraded to 10, so I take it there isn't a safe way to reinstall with only an 8 key? I'm kicking myself now that I didn't ask my sister to get me one of the $20 Microsoft employee store Windows copies before her internship ended lol.
  5. For my new build I used drives from my previous one since they were still in good condition. In doing this I understood that I was going to have to reinstall Windows since it was a new motherboard, but when I booted up the new PC for the first time I was surprised to find it booted into Windows with all of my old stuff and everything. Is there any problem with going ahead and just using this Windows install with new drivers and such, or should I go through the trouble of reinstalling?
  6. Damn why everything gotta be so complicated. If I would have to go through all that trouble I really don't think it's worth it and will probably get a normal DVD drive instead (assuming watching DVDs doesn't require this same level of BS?). EDIT: Did some research. Found out more. Discovered VLC trick. We good
  7. I like to check out movies from the local library to watch them on my computer, and I need a drive for my new build. Even though they are just DVDs I figured I'd go ahead get a blu ray drive just in case for the future. Unfortunately finding in-depth information about these is pretty hard since they're so rare. Does anyone know of a good especially quiet drive? Thanks.
  8. I'm planning to do an ITX build in the Corsair Obsidian 250D. The plan is to have the 140mm (or alternative upgrade to 200mm) fan doing intake through the front, an MSI Gaming X gtx 1060 6gb pulling air in through the side, a dual-120mm radiator cooling CPU and expelling air out the other side, and two 80mm fans in the back also doing exhaust. I'm worried that this is not enough airflow and I will have thermal problems. If so I will probably make changes to my build that I really don't want to. Also, what 80mm fans would be good, as well as a 200mm to replace the front one?
  9. Thanks for the advise on the RAM - I had originally picked it out a while back when prices were different and made the mistake of not checking again. I have considered moving to mATX considering the 250D is not much smaller than some of those, and might give it a second look just to see the budget difference. At the end of the day a lot of portability is pretty important to me. I'm aware there are cheaper 1060s but I've heard great things about the performance and noise level of the MSI variant I picked out. 144hz sounds super cool and I had initially considered getting it instead of 1440p, but I don't really game often, so I decided against it.
  10. Personally I'm not going to worry too much about power rating. The power supply exhausts itself through the back, so I wouldn't expect it to make a huge impact on case temperatures, and also I live in college housing and will for the next few years, so I'm not paying an electric bill. On the other hand I think putting fans in the back sounds like a great idea. Currently my plan was to have the front and the GPU do intake and the CPU cooler radiator do exhaust. I guess I would have the back fans also do exhaust to help clear out the GPU heat.
  11. PSU and case are indeed compatible! I've searched around and unfortunately have not been able to find any commentary on thermals. I did come across some people who did this case/card combo but that doesn't mean it's optimal. I'm hesitant to give up on this 1060 because I've heard such great things about its performance and noise level, but I could change cards if this is a bad idea. Any other potential ways to alleviate this problem?
  12. One tier down in the list on this site but probably wouldn't make a big difference. ty
  13. Title pretty much says it. Have been looking at the Acer R221Q (recommended to me previously), H226HQL (I used to use this and liked it), and UM.WB6AA.A01 (fully adjustable and rotatable but thicc bezels). Would love recommendations between these or any others I missed.
  14. Just wanted to quickly run this by you guys to make sure it all looks good. Ryzen 5 1600 (already have a corsair h100i from an old build to overclock it with) G.Skill Flare X 2x8gb 3200mhz MSI Gaming X 1060 6gb Corsair 250D (ITX case) EVGA supernova G2 550W Dell U2515h 1440p 60hz monitor (1060 6gb is enough with this for the games I play, plus this build is largely for productivity) Some sort of quality quiet optical drive (I like to rent movies from the public library but don't have a TV) I already have an SSD and a couple of hard drives all in good condition from a previous build, a copy of Windows, thermal compound, and the aforementioned H100i. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/svrgVY TY for any recommendations (:
  15. Probably not a novel idea, but no matter how long I spend away from it I can always trust tf2 for some goofy non-stressful gameplay
