PC Junkies,
So, I'm between a rock and a hard place. Let me set the tone first with a snapshot of my current rig that I built the majority of it in 2012 minus the video card.
Intel i7 2600k OC 4.6mhz stable w/Corsair H80
Asus P8Z68-V Pro MB
Gskill DDR3 1866 8GB RAM
Crucial M4 128gb OS SSD w/windows 10
Samsung EVO 250 and 500gb SSDs for games
WD Black 1TB Storage
Coolermaster HAF 922 Case
As you can see, still a pretty solid PC for the most part. If I were just gaming, and gaming only I could probably hold off for a while to upgrade. However, as of recently, I have started to notice my PC running slower. Especially in games, with sometimes an occasional BSOD. Though, they are few and far in between.
I mainly play games like Player Unknown BGS, BF1, Mass Effect, Dark Souls III, Escape From Tarkov. I'm also a very big Flight Simulation guru mainly sticking with a very modded Prepar3d V4, and the occasional XPlane 11.
I'm also a video editor for my YouTube channel covering my Private Pilot flying and flight training. I utilize Adobe Premiere Pro for my editing. I've noticed that my i7 runs maxed out, and sometimes seems to bog my system down to the point it's annoying to edit. Then my encoding and uploading seems to take quite awhile for my videos. This is also true for some game streaming I have started to do while playing PUBG
Player Unknown I have noticed that my rig is for the most part, stuttery/laggy compared to buddies I play with and YouTube/Streamers. Though it doesn't always relate to an FPS drop, just overall playabilty. It is very frustrating, and maybe a good fresh Win10 install could clean up some issues. Even with P3D, I've noticed that my FPS and overall smoothness hasn't been as sharp.
Anyways, I have some extra cash that I could put toward upgrading/updating an aging rig. I'm not an Intel fanboy, as I typically use what is best suited for what I do and what is available at the time. I started off with an AMD Phenom 965 Black Edition years ago with my first build. So I'm not against going back to AMD, especially with the new Ryzen launch and what I have seen from the chips.
As of now, I seem it is pointless to upgrade my i7 to a 7700k being that CoffeeLake is right around the corner. I don't seem to know enough about Coffee Lake to determine if I should wait for it to drop to upgrade. With AMD dropping their R7 1700-1800x, and what they are doing for overall performance in comparison to what Intel has now, is a pretty compelling option. Sure for pure single thread gaming the 7700k is a better option, but as a whole, I'm not convinced it is a better option than a Ryzen chip.
Sure, it may not be a necessity to upgrade right now. However, it has been a long time since I dug into my rig or built my own for that matter. I've helped many friends choose and build their own PCs. I'd like to upgrade, possibly keep my i7 to build another PC for other uses. Keep in mind, I'm only looking to upgrade CPU/MOBO/Memory. I have a good case, cooler (though may have to change, don't think I have my AMD bracket) and hard drives. Let me know what you guys think..... sorry for the novel! I appreciate the unbiased and logical responses that ensue.
