  1. Hi everyone, I work for a music venue as head technician, i'm mainly responsible for maintaning the audio, lighting & video tech and that's where most of my knowledge is. Additionally i'm responsible for our entire IT. We are currently expanding with a second larger hall, our capacity's are going to be 350 (current hall) and about 700 for the new large one. Due to Covid we are shut down but able to survive, budgets have been cut dramaticaly tho which means we are doing as much of the planning and furnishing ourselves. Now the current network with a few switches & AP's is fairly simple and was setup by a local company a few years ago, for the expansion i'm forced to do this on my own tho. Now I'm confident i can get everything up and running but have little experience planning a system like this and i'm having trouble finding a good piece of software to create floorplans showing all the equipment & create a patch list of all connections. what i would ideally like is something that alows me to visually map all switches, AP's, CCTV cams, PC's, spare wall jacks & anything else that needs a connection onto a floorplan, assign a logical numbering code to these items based on room number etc, assign them to patch panels and switch ports in my main Rack, and the software then automatically creates a patch list (spreadsheet) for me. going the other way round could work aswell, i create the patch list and then drag everything too it's location on a floorplan. everything should then be linked, so if i change something on the floorplan the patch get's updated and vice versa. a way to keep track of Vlan's, print labels for all the ports and patch panels or other helpfull info would be great but not strictly necessary. does something like this exist? I'm finding a ton of diagramming software like MS visio or lucidchart but those don't seem to have anykind of patch list feature, also uploading an existing floorplan as "background" doens't seem to be an option here. how do the pro's go about this? I can't be the only one wanting to do things this way? it seems logical to have your plans match the real world as close as possible, not just having theoretical diagrams?
  2. thanks for your replies guys, i've been quickly looking into freenas with a owncloud plugin and it looks pretty simple to set-up. think i'm going to do a test setup at home and see how i like it.
  3. no, hosted by ourself, not even off-site. just a pc in a closet running 24/7. in an ideal situation we recycle the current local server for this but like i said a one time investment is not an issue for us, but he wants to keep montly costs as low as possible
  4. 1 terabyte of storage would be plenty, but easy expandability (pop in another hard drive, assign it and done) would be nice
  5. Hi all, My boss wants to move away from our old local file server to a cloud solution so he's asked me (the only somewhat tech savy guy there) to find a solution, he preferably wants something with a one time investment and no monthly cost whatsoever. i've been looking into self hosted cloud solutions but since i don't really have any experience with servers/hosting (except a minecraft server for 3 friends lol) i'm having a hard time understanding the options out there and what exacly is required for something like this. what i'm trying to achieve is something that works exactly like a onedrive, dropbox, etc. shared folders with certain restrictions for every user that sync automatically over the internet (so people could work out of the office) a web interface would be very nice but isn't strictly required. Could anyone help me in the right direction with this?
  6. might try the wind tunnel first, if it works i could save a buck.
  7. it won't fly(flight case is just what we call these things). i get that i'll never get temps below ambient but the biggest advantage of water over air is that i can place my radiator to get optimal airflow, i can't do that with a aircooler mounted to the mobo.
  8. hi all, i'm want to build a custom PC for running video server software for large LED walls and projections (the one's you see at large concerts, festivals, etc). this system is going to get abused quite a bit, the whole thing will have to fit inside a 3unit 19 inch server case which will be inside a road/flight case for transport. during transport the case will be tipped on it's back which means the pc will be facing rear io to the floor. during use and in a worst case scenario it will be out in a field in direct sunlight running 12hours non-stop. compared to a regular desktop this thing is going to have a though life. since i'm going to need something like a i7 8700 and a gtx 1080 to run my software smoothly and the case will only have air in/out at the front and back cooling is probably going to be an issue, therefore i think water cooling is going to be by best option. unfortunately i have no experience with custom loops etc so i'm looking at some kind of all-in-one solution and the EK phoenix products seem like a perfect match. my only worry is, will an AIO cooler like this survive the abuse of the road? has anyone got experience with this cooler and would you trust it in the conditions described above? any other tips and recommendations are welcome as well.
  9. i do really need a laptop for work and on the go, already have a decent desktop. thanks for the reply's!
  10. there's actualy plenty of US shops that will ship to the netherlands but the problem with buying outside of the EU is massive import costs that are difficult to calculate before hand. if i really can't find anything else that i like i will probably go down this route but it's more of a last resort.
  11. Hi all, so i'm in desperate need of a new laptop and i would love to get a razer blade 14" 2017, the high specs, touchscreen and especially the professional look of it are perfect. Unfortunatly, i live in the Netherlands and razer doesn't sell them here, there is one small company that imports them but they are currently out of stock and it could take awhile before the get new ones in. Because of this i've been looking for similar laptops but can't really find anything, almost everything with similar specs is very gamery and i can't find anything with a touchscreen(which would be very nice to have). am i not searching good enough or is there really nothing out there? I would love to get some suggestions for different laptops and maybe on how i could get my hands on a razer blade.
  12. thanks for the reply's. i figured the 1060 would be doing the hard work but couldn't find any thing about this
  13. Hi, i'm currious as to how exactly usb-c video adapters/dongles work. i'm in need of a new laptop and the razer blade(14 inch 2017) is looking like the best option for me, only problem is that i need gigabit ethernet and a VGA port for a external touschreen. to tackle this problem i'll have to get a dongle but this got me wondering how exactly the video is processed. is there a separate GPU/video chip inside the dongle that takes care of this or will the gtx 1060 inside the blade processes the video and then somehow send it out through usb-c and let the dongle convert it to VGA? the dongle i'm looking to get is the dell DA200. http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=sg&l=en&s=bsd&cs=sgbsd1&sku=470-abnl if anyone has experience whit this dongle or another one that features gigabit ehternet and VGA i'd love to hear it.
