  1. Thinkpads are significantly cheaper in the US, I've noticed they draw a premium in Europe and Asia. I paid $1,100 and got more RAM and Storage. That Inspiron is a nice machine though, wouldn't mind buying one if they were more business-friendly.
  2. Is there any hope for playing battlefield 1?
  3. It's a Thinkpad, a professional Laptop. IBM use to own the brand. The whole lineup is great for what I normally use it for, business. Thinkpads don't normally game. I ordered the 14 inch quad-core model because I hook it up to dual 1440p monitors at home with a docking station, it makes life easier to have one machine for school and home. They do make a Thinkpad workstation if you want a better GPU. P51 offers Xenon E3-1535m and a Quadro M2200, if you need the horses (but who wants to lug around a 15.6 inch brick). What was disappointing though was they failed to include Thunderbolt 3 on their "performance" model, not enough PCIe Lanes. But, for my use, the mechanical docking port gives me everything I need, except for one thing, an eGPU. And that's a "want" if I'm being honest with myself.
  4. Hello, everyone. I just purchased a productivity laptop for med school and would like to pick up some gaming when time permits. Battlefield 1 looks like a spectacular game, and GTA V is also on my list. But, I just don't know if my laptop is powerful enough to run those games at reasonable framerates. I know my GPU will be a significant bottleneck, so I downloaded MSI afterburner and gave it the hardest mostly-stable overclock it would take. Below are my specs: CPU: i7-7820HQ 3.5 ghz max boost (undervolted -.130 volts) GPU: Nvidia 940MX 2gb gddr5 (coreclock overclocked by 135 mhz, to 1310 mhz; Memory overclocked 600mhz, to 3100 mhz) Memory: 16X2 gb ddr4 2400mhz Storage: 240 gb Sata III SSD + 500 gb HDD over USB 3.0 when at home. How would you expect these games to run on my laptop? I run a 2560*1440p 60hz monitor when at home, but am not opposed to turning down the resolution. I would just like to know about how well it'll run on my laptop before plunking down the cash for a download. If these games are too much, can anyone suggest games that are reasonable?
  5. Hey everyone. I'm new to tuning CPUs and fiddling with settings. I've downloaded XTU to undervolt the i7-7280HQ in my Lenovo laptop. Previously the CPU would get as hot as 94 to 100 C, and throttle down pretty bad. After a 3 min stress test it was running 3.2 ghz, when peak boost is supposed to be 3.5 ghz. I've undervolted by -.105 volts and completely stopped the throttling with a 3 min stress test, though it still gets up around 93 to 96c. I'm just wondering two things. When do I stop lowering the voltage? How should I validate a good undervolt/ overclock, or should I just do a conservative one like .06 (which almost stopped the throttling) and call it a day? Edit: Third question. This laptop is easy to open and service (already opened it twice). Is it worth it to replace the stock thermal paste with some Artic Silver 5, or will it be a negligible difference? I have a kit around with some left over.
  6. Do you have any idea were I can purchase Hyundai Electronics RAM? Are they also know as Hynix? I quick google search left me really confused.
  7. Hey everyone. First time poster here on the forums. I just purchased a new Thinkpad T470P with I7-7820HQ and Nvidia 940MX to serve as my daily driver for medical school (which starts tomorrow). When I ordered my system I selected 16gb of DDR4 (2400mhz) because chrome . . . and it was only 95$ to upgrade. I thought I would receive a 2 x 8gb configuration, but when I opened it to install my old SSD, I found out it is 1 x 16gb. I would like to get the dual channel speed boost, and fill both slots. I want to keep the original stick because 16gb soddims are expensive. I need help picking a compatible stick with my current. Here's what I know about my current stick using CPU-Z:
