JackFrost- (Dark Base Pro 900, 1700X, Crosshair VI Hero)
DiabloPCs replied to DiabloPCs's topic in Build Logs
It was at a really good price when we bought it and ensourced only had availability for those cables at the time. It was also purchased when the 1070 was not so expensive. It will do the job just fine; just not overkill by any means. -

JackFrost- Build Log Prologue With my first year of college approaching, I found myself needing to do a landmark build to showcase what I have done with custom builds this far. This client build is the perfect culprit. Over the last three years I have built more systems than I can count on my hands and toes, and through that, I have learned so much. I am going to apply everything into this rig. You can expect custom acrylic work, custom loop, sleeved cables, and more! Needless to say, I am extremely excited to complete this one. Components M/B: Asus Crosshair VI Hero CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700X RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB 16GB 3000MHz (2x8GB) GPU: Asus Strix GTX 1080 SSD: Samsung 960 EVO 250GB HDD: WD Black 1TB PSU: EVGA NEX650G Case: Be Quiet! Skylake-X or Ryzen 7 for CAD in college
DiabloPCs replied to DiabloPCs's topic in New Builds and Planning
The Final Verdict: Nor amd or intel have impressing options available at this point for me to upgrade my rig. So I will wait for the ecosystem to expand and for intel to figure out that thermal paste instead of soldering is a terrible idea lol. Hey maybe I will even go threadripper...fingerscrossed! I want to give huge thanks to nerdslayer1 for the help in this decision! I decided to go with the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501! Also if anyone knows of some crucial laptop peripherals please link or name them, thanks! -

Another update: After some heavy research, I think I am going to go with the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501VW and wait for Threadripper to launch and see what intel does about their poor manufacturing methods. Any thoughts on this; it would get ordered late tonight so I am still open for any new ideas? Specs: i7 6700HQ 2.6-3.6GHz 16GB DDR4 2133MHz 4k ips touch screen display 960M 2G varient Superb Battery life 5lbs 0.8in thick Here is a link to a review that includes benchmarks and specs: https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/asus-zenbook-pro-ux501-v I would be picking it up for 1179 USD which is a pretty good deal compared to everything else that is out there. Let me know what you guys think and if there is something that I am missing like a new product available or something. -

Me either. I do know that the two of them use the same thermal paste between the die and the heat spreader; so I would assume that it also has a problem just not as severely. -

Update to my previous update: Scratching both of those previous laptops off the list; now I am looking into the Asus Zenbook Pro and LG Gram. Both look to be really nice and my friend has a Zenbook and it is a beautiful machine. Still undecided between Intel and AMD as of right now. -

Update: After some consideration on the laptop front, I may have arrived at a decision if I pursue this route. I am think the Razor Blade Stealth or Lenevo X1 both are similar in price and performance. Still undecided on the desktop front so thanks for the help and I look forward to receiving more! -

Really? I have always read that it can utilize high core counts really well, just not hyper-threading. -

Good to know, I will probably do most of my heavy work in the dorm on my desktop (if I get one) and lesser things on the laptop.
